Re: Wheezy - aptitude safe-upgrade vs apt-get dist-upgrade

2012-02-27 Thread Monsieur Louk
I think you'll find every thing you need in the Debian doc:
http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-reference/ch02.en.html#_literal_apt_get_literal_literal_apt_cache_literal_vs_literal_aptitude_literal

Quote: The difference between "safe-upgrade"/"upgrade" and "full-upgrade"/"
dist-upgrade" only appears when new versions of packages stand in different
dependency relationships from old versions of those packages. The "aptitude
safe-upgrade" command does not install new packages nor remove installed
packages.

Re: New computer planned

2012-02-22 Thread Monsieur Louk
I wouldn't worry about SSD failure. At least, not as much as one usually
worries about HDD failure :)

The guys at hardware.fr did a nice experiment: they set up a computer to do
continuous write-erase cycles on an SSD in order to see how long it would
last, and when performance decreases would start. The drive handled about
600 TB of write operations before it started to show problems. I think
you'll admit this is enough for average usage.

The 8800GT though, that's another story. It's kind of an outdated GPU, not
one I'd put in a recent PC, especially one that comes at £599. Bear in mind
there are no really expensive hardware except the SSD. I think you could
haggle a bit on the price and/or ask for a higher-end/more modern GPU :)

If you really want to be picky, the Crucial M4 series of SSDs got better
reviews than the Agility 3 series. That and the fact OCZ has got a bit of
bad rep for their customer service (although that will be your colleague's
problem, not yours).

You could always edit your /etc/rc.local file and put some 'mount' command
lines in it

version either :'(

Hi, the first thing you can trry is to set up a shared directory in your
host OS and try to mount it in the guest OS. If it works it means the
additions were successfully installed. Note that after a kernel upgrade or
virtualbox upgrade you should reinstall the additions (it should even be
prompted when you start the VM). Also, what version of Debian are you
running: lenny? squeeze? Any kind of exotic graphic card? (though that
shouldn't matter for the guest display).

Sorry, I replied to Jim instead of the user list ^^

This could help too:

squeeze guest OS won't boot in virtualbox

2010-04-08 Thread Monsieur Louk
Hello everyone

I currently have two PCs with virtualbox 3.1.6, one has a P8400 cpu (mobile
version of the Core 2 Duo series I think), the other one an Athlon X2 4200+
(socket 939).

The first one can boot a squeeze guest OS without troubles (with the current
kernel). With the other one I always get a "soft lockup, cpu stuck..." error
message. It's been that way since the "trunk" kernels.
I've tried fresh installs (cd install and net install), I've tried to export
the working VM from the first PC to the second, ... I always get the bug. I
should also mention the I can create 64 bits or 32 bits VMs on the first PC
but only 32 bits VMs on the second (both PCs are running a 64 bits host OS).

It's already been reported I think, I wanted to know if anyone has found a
workaround.

PS: I think the 4200+ cpu hasn't got any king of virtualization technology,
could it be a lead?

Windows has (recently?) released Security Essentials which is surprisingly
good for a free AV. Coulb be worth looking into it. The win version of
ClamAV is, AFAIK, sadly outdated.
