Re: can't ifconfig dummy

Why doesn't `ifconfig dummy songdog' work? It tells me:

 Am I the dummy here?

The same happened to me, until I realized that the interface should be
called 'dummy0' (or 1, 2, etc...)

Have you tried with the following parameter?

cdu31a_port=0x340

Re: Installing Netscape with dpkg

Hi Ken!

Dpkg specifically asks for the beta 4 binary; can I get away with using
one of the newer binaries? Do I need to tweak anything to get it to
 install using dpkg?

This is what I've done. I got the 3.0b7 binary from their site; then
grabbed the 3.0b6 installer (source form) from ftp.debian.org (under the
rex hierarchy) and slightly modified it to use the 3.0b7 package (I don't
remember exactly the modifications, they were slight).
Then it worked, and it didn't seem to break anything. I'll tell you when I
upgrade Netscape again! g

IPX and loopback

1996-08-12 Thread Pablo Bianucci
Hi!

Why does kerneld load the IPX module while the localhost's loopback
interface is being set up? (ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1)
I see no need to it... stracing ifconfig shows that it makes an IPX call
(and also an AX.25 and some other calls). This didn't happened with and
old Slackware based installation, and, altough harmless (the module gets
cleanly unloaded) annoys me a bit.
Any ideas?

Non debian packages

1996-08-12 Thread Pablo Bianucci
Hi!

I've upgraded to Debian 1.1 two days ago and have some doubts...

I used to have installed lots of packages I couldn't find in a debianized
form (fetchpop, ImageMagick, and lots more). I see several alternatives,
but I'd like a recommendation...

 1) Wait till somebody releases a debianized package (I don't think this
will be the best, though)

 2) Install everything as it comes under /usr/local, and keep the mess
confined there. (A last resort, isn't it?)

 3) Make an attempt to 'debianize' the packages, installing them under
/usr/local with dpkg (my 'own debianization', in fact).

 4) Try to debianize the packages in a FSSTND compliant way, to
eventually install them with dpkg. (I'd need a spare year... g)

Of those four, I like best the 3rd, but I've got to learn how to make a
good debianized package (I've already updated to lynx 2.5 and xwpe 1.4.2,
byt that was just a matter of 'manual diffing')

Any recommendations?

Bye Good Luck!
