Re: Printer, Sound card
Hi there, it doesn't matter what distribution you use to get things things working because you have to do the same things for each distribution that you try. to get things like sound and printing you have to compile them into the kernel. I forget the exact configuration to get things working. but let me make some wild guesses. choose experimental drivers. in geveral setup choose parrellel support and the option that it spawns choose plug'n'play devices choose the thing under thing goto character devices and choose printer support and bingo you have printing for sound go to sound and pick your card you might want to go and do a lspci -a to show you what your sound card's chipset is and other settings. for software to print you probably want to get magic-filter and lpr or something like that. get sound players. you didn't indicate what the version of the kernel you are using or what you did to the kernel when using debian. I hope this is some help to you. Paul On Mon, 7 Feb 2000, Eric Hagglund wrote: > I have had Debian for about two years and never have > been able to get my printer configured. playing music with scsi emulation
Hello everyone, I just noticed a problem playing audio cd's on my cdrom. I have two hardrives on the primary interface. I have an hp7200i cdrw on the secondary master and a liteon 32x cdrom. I have kernel version 2.2.7 compiled and installed from source. I have configured and compiled (successfully) 2.2.7 to include scsi emulation and scsi cdrom support. I have taken out support for ide/atapi support. The error I get when I use cdplay is: sr1: CDROM (ioctl) reports ILLEGAL REQUEST. cdplay: ioctl cdromplaytrkind The lines in kern.log are: May 6 09:34:13 experimental kernel: sr1: CDROM not ready yet. I can also mount and read data cd's that are msdos and other formats. I hope this gives you enough information to give me some ideas on the problem. Paul

So I used setserial to set /dev/ttyS2 to irq 5 and the modem fired right up. Now all I have to do is figure out what file to edit to do this on boot-up.
Re: man missing ?
hello, I don't think you can add optional disks to the boot disks. I maybe wrong but I just made a set of custom boot disks to include a speech synthisizer into the kernel. That was not the hard part, what was hard was that I had to put a different default.map file into the base2_0.tgz file. and do some other stuff with the root.bin It is my understanding that you use a program called floppy-split to split the base2_0.tgz into the base disks. You would be adding one more disk to the mix that everyone would have to download because it was included in the base2_0.tgz file and could not be skipped over during the base system installation section. I could give you a couple of alternatives to get a brief explanation for programs that would be --help and take a little time to familiarize yourself with the directory structure of debian. This really helped me to understand the difference between /bin and /sbin user and superuser binaries. There are howto on the web at http://www.debian.org and at ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux those two website are valuable resource to find information on linux. Look in /usr/doc/ ie /usr/doc/ppp/FAQ.gz tells you how to connect to your isp. I hope this helps you. Paul Let me know if you need specific information and i maybe able to help you. If I can't some else on this list probably could. Recently I downloaded the 5 or 6 floppy images and installed potato on a separate drive on my Win95 (yech!) machine. Got the base installed just fine, and then was offered the choices between Home machine/Scientific Workstation/Network Administration Box/etc, etc. Continuing on would have gotten me the man reader, but alas, my modem wouldn't work, so I couldn't download any further packages. I can zcat the doc files, but because there's garbage in the output of that (ctrl characters, etc), it's not easy to read. As a result I've been rebooting into Win95, connecting to the web, doing research, rebooting into Linux, making config changes, failing, rebooting into Win95, etc etc. It would be a lot easier if I just had the man reader to read the ppp/modem/etc documentation. Having an optional install floppy with the man reader (not necessarily a bunch of non-essential man PAGES) would have been well-worth it to me. Since the floppy would presumable be optional, it wouldn't have to be downloaded by those who feel comfortable with what they are doing. An option install floppy with a man reader sounds like a good compromise to me. -- Unsubscribe? mail -s unsubscribe [EMAIL PROTECTED] < /dev/null

One of the biggest beefs I had about installation was lack of knowing what I needed to do and when. I installed Debian, and ran into dselect. It totally confused me, and I didn't have a clue what to do next and where (the dselect docs weren't a whole lot of help). I got out of dselect and started to read up on it, and ask questions, and search the net for docs. Unfortunately, I didn't read or know that I could use the ftp method to get the files I needed - I thought I had to configure my modem and ISP connection first - and I still don't really know how to do that now. I spent countless hours just figuring out what files dselect had to have (required and important packages), downloading them to my zip drive, and installing them. My biggest frustration was after I first installed Debian (without finishing dselect). I had Linux running, but was clueless as to what to do next. Everyone pointed to the man and info pages, but I didn't have any, and didn't know where to get them. It was another week before I figured out that they weren't part of the basic install, I had to get them and install them. All I knew was I got the usual "bash: command not found" message when I tried to man something. > If you mean earlier than this, I think I need clarification to understand > exactly how you mean to use them, or expect others to. I agree with that, in the early stages, the HOWTOs probably are more helpful than man pages. Those, however, are also installed via packages, and for a newbie just starting the install, I hadn't a clue where they were, or what I needed to do to get them. > What I would prefer to hear is "I felt I needed information about foo" > or I needed "man bar" when I was at such-and-such during installation. > Am I being fair? I guess the point of all of this is something that I'm sure has been discussed before, under different context; from a newbies point of view, Debian/Linux is confusing, intimidating, and frustrating. Perhaps we need better install docs, perhaps we need better help during installtion or while using dselect. Perhaps a HOWTO on what your first steps should be. I'd certainly be willing to contribute to that effort in any way I can. But in any case, this is something that needs to be added to the base installation. In the simplest form, when you finish the installation (before going to dselect), maybe a line or two could be displayed that would tell you where the help files are and how to get them, s

hello, I do sympathize with lack of knowledge at installation time. We were all there at one time or another. (including myself, I have had to reinstall more then one do to a lack of understanding of linux and the operating system. I would hate to see the boot disks reach 10 disks but I can assume that we will be there in the near future. One of the last steps of the installation is to use a number of different aptions to get more packages dselect, dpkg, apt-get and others that i am forgetting. It maybe prudent to search the debian home page to find out what to do after you got the base system up and running. Everyone has to go through this steep learning curve to learn linux. I know it can be frustrating at times but resources like this mail list, debian documentation project and the linux documentation project are good resources to start out with. If you need doumentation try looking through the /usr/doc directory that at least can give you a start. I hate the editor they put on the base dists ae it is very crude. i wish they could put something else on there (that would fit) This debate whether to include man on the boot disks or not has been going on for a long time before I got interested in linux and will be here long after I leave. I am sorry if I don't think like you on this subject. But I would always try to help people with linux if they are "newbies" or "guru's" (general understanding relatively useless) If there is anything I can help you please let me know. Well think about this? do you need to install all of the pakcages under windows3.x or windows9x to get it to work. games solitaire and mindsweeper. you don't need man-db to get linux running. that is the issue not the convience of the "newbie" to make it easier to install. if you want that try windows operating system. windows comes on a cd to install the complete windows operating system you need roughly 150-200 megs of hardrive space. Is this what you want. the next thing people will want who are new to linux will be emacs. As I stated in the this thread man-db is not necessary to get linux up and running it is there for convience. Then I did 'ps' and it showed the following: PID TTY STAT TIME COMMAND 105 1 S0.01-bash 106 2 S0.00/sbin/getty 38400 tty2 107 3 S0.00/sbin/getty 38400 tty3 108 4 S0.00/sbin/getty 38400 tty4 109 5 S 0.00/sbin/getty 38400 tty5 110 6 S 0.00/sbin/getty 38400 tty6 129 S1 S 0.00 /usr/sbin/ppd call provider 130 S1 S 0.00 /usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/chatscripts/provider 131 1 R 0.00 ps Then I entered 'poff' at the command line, and then 'ps' again and this time the 7th and 8th lines from above were not there. I dunno, should I have waited. But I didn't here any 'screeching' sound from my modem..nor did I see any wild characters on my screen.. Could somebody out there please give me a step by step approch to how I should do things from the time I connect my modem thru' a 25 pin connector to the computer, connect the line from my telephone to the 'phone' input of my modem, connect the line supplied with my modem to the main telephone jack on one end and the 'line' input of the modem on the other till the time I can issue the command 'telnet 134.68.140.1' and can safely log on to my system at school... Here's my system's configuration: 486 ISA bus IDE controller 120 MB HD 16MB Ram I don't see if any of this will be of use, but I've given it just incase. I wanted to buy a 56k internal, but many people advised me against it saying that it wouldn't work on my 486. So I bought a 33.6K internal modem..Do you think I should use an internal modem instead of the external one..My ISP provides 56k speed. Also my ISP provides PAP (I think ) since almost everyone who connects to it uses Windows 95 or higher. Also, the modem came with some installation floppies for Windows (but, then, what doesn't, nowadays??!), but this is not a Winmodem..at least it doesn't call itself that. Will I have to write some chatscript or something??? If possible, please explain things to me in as much layman's language as you can...A prompt reply would be tremendously appreciated. Thank you so much.

hello, netbase and netstd allow for telnet and ftp access to your machine. the base disks allow for telnet and ftp out but not in. hello, lets start with pcmcia, do you have a laptop? ppp do you want to get more packages then the ones on the base-disks, ie man and manpages. printer support, you can choose it in the modules section of the installation process. ZIP drive, are you going to be installing from this. if yes how do you expect to if you don't have it during the instaflflation process. Your new, to these boot disks, I remember when there was only five disks. Now there is seven not including the boot disk you made. the man-db would fit on a floppy, but what language are you going to put on it english? what about everyone else. how hard is it to get the man-db file and the manpages of your choice. I agree that is an important package but not essential to get linux up and running. I can't imagine one more boot disk is that big of an issue. If it's more than one disk, maybe a subset of the manpages is warranted that CAN be included. * Being that man is the basic help system of Linux, it's too important to NOT include in the boot disks. ESPECIALLY for new users. * Man may not be required, but everyone on this list constantly points to man pages. The reference manuals constantly point to man pages. It's totally frustrating to be told to read the man pages, but you don't have them, and can't figure out how to get them because you don't have the man pages. hello, very simple. Man-db is not necessary to run linux. it is nice to have but if you don't have man linux can still run. the other reason why man is not included in the base distribution is the space issue. [kirk@braille.uwo.ca: question on keyboard menu choice.] (fwd)
hello my debian friends, can somebody on this list help me and/or us. Paul -- Forwarded message -- To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] From: Kirk Reiser <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: question on keyboard menu choice.] --- Start of forwarded message --- From: Kirk Reiser <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: debian-boot@lists.debian.org Subject: question on keyboard menu choice. Dear Sir: I was hoping you might be able to answer a question or two, and help me solve a problem I am having building a special boot disk set. We have written a set of kernel drivers to provide speech output on the console. As part of these patches we build special keymaps to build into the kernel or load with loadkeys. We have started making a set of debian distribution disks with our modified kernel on them. We have no problem until we get to the select keyboarde choice in the installation menu. If we select u.s. our keyboard review functions are overwritten. What we have done is dump a binary keymap file and named it us.bmap to try to get around the problem. I assumed that the us.bmap file was unpacked and loaded once a person selected us keymap at the menu choice. Unfortunately, it just appears to clear the keymap and not actually load the keymap. At least I don't think so because the keymaps.tgz file is still intact after that point and there does not seem to be any sign of the keymaps being unpacked. If we try to by pass the menu choice, things go fine until we get down to installing the base system. We get an unable to find kbdconf, I believe at the time zone prompt. The system seems to just go back to the menu at that point. If you could clear up exactly what goes on at the keyboard choice, that would be very useful. I have looked through as much documentation as I have found so far, and have not been able to find a discussion of the actual installation process. That is not to say one doesn't exist, I just ain't found it yet. Anyway, any help you could give me would certainly be appreciated. Kirk --- End of forwarded message ---

kernel manpages?
Hello everyone, does anyone know where the kernel manpages are. they are the ninth section. debian only supports the following: This package contains the Linux man pages for these sections: * 4 = Devices (e.g. hd, sd). * 5 = File formats and protocols, syntaxis of several system files (e.g. wtmp, /etc/passwd, nfs). * 7 = Conventions and standards, macro packages, etc. (e.g. nroff, ascii). I went to get the manpages from sunsite and they had the rest 2, 3, 6, and 8. Where is 9? Paul

hello everybody, and thankyou for all of the assistance to my recent questions. I have yet another question. I am trying to download debian packages from an ftp site with ncftp or wget. I am having a problem in getting files that are symlinked to other places. I cannot for the life of me find out what flag to turn on or off to get ncftp or wget to follow symlinks. If anyone could and/or would help I would greatly appreciated it. Paul

Now i want to start on makeing a web interface for a database i put together. I read through the documentation, but i am confused. Is there a tutorial for the php3 program? If so where can i get it. If not is there any documentation that is available for a database novice. I am going to start learning C over the summer. Anyways any help would be greatly appreciated. Re: Fresh install. Little troubles.
hello Julian, first we have to get your base system up. You have to decide if you want libc5 (bo) or libc6 (hamm) It is not a good idea to have half and half. To upgrade to hamm there is a howto that tells you how to upgrade from libc5 to libc6. It is on the debian site somewhere. Once you have that sorted out you can get the programs that you want to install. the trick is to go to the hamm directory structure and get the libc5 and install that then you can install libc6. But read the howto and you should be ok and we can take it from there. I hope this helps you and if there is anything wlse that me or the debian-user list can do, don't hesitate to ask. Hope this helps. Hello my debian friends, I just got a pentium II with an awe64 sound card, and I want to have sound capability. I know I have to recompile the kernel for this to work. I also know that I have to use isapnptools. I am running slink (2.0) kernel version 2.0.33 (from the base disks) I have not recompiled the kernel yet for sound support. I read the awe-sound-howto and other relavent documentaion. I followed it upto a certain point. What I have done so far is: # phpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf (as root) it gave me this isaphp.conf file, but I am stumped on what to do next. Do I have to get source awe sound drivers? I thought I could use the awe.deb packages once I got the card to be recognized. Can any one shed some light on my lack of knowledge of isapnptools and how to use them to recognize pnp cards. Thanks in advance. Paul P.S. mail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
changing networks?!?
hello everybody, i have a question, who doesn't on this list right? ok here it goes. I have a computer at work connected to the net via eathernet. I have all of my networking working great. My question is when i bring it home what do i have to change? hostname and ip address comes to mind since at work i have my own. i know it has to be something like 192.168.xxx.xxx is right or some variation. I was also wondering about my gateway and resolv.conf in /etc. The computer i am going to take home is going to be connected to the internet by modem (not all the time but sometimes) I don't want to know specifically what to change ie numbers bit what files to change. I have the howto's at my home page but i did not see to much on this subject. I am going to use diald. i don't have to worry about connecting to my computer through the modem - just so i can get out. Any help or directions would be much appreciated. If you need more information to help my conversion, please don't hesitate to ask and i shall provide. -- Paul McDermott The Computer Braille Facility The University of Western Ontario University Community Centre 215 London, Ontario N6A 3K7 Phone: (519) 661-3061 Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Web Address: http://www.braille.uwo.ca/~paul -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: Debian Linux Problem
hello there, this is a comman problem for people who are new to linux and X. The problem is that you installed an Xserver and configured it incorrectly. there is a file in /etc/X11/xdm/Xserver: here is mine. # $XConsortium: Xserv.ws.cpp,v 1.3 93/09/28 14:30:30 gildea Exp $ # # Xservers file, workstation prototype # # This file should contain entries to start the servers on the # local machine; if you have more than one display (not screen), # you can add entries to the list (one per line). If you also # have some X terminals connected which do not support XDMCP, # you can add them here as well. Each X terminal line should # look like: # XTerminalName:0 foreign # # X servers are automatically added to this file by the Debian # xbase and xserver configuration scripts. :0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X take out the last line. this will allow you to use the command "startx" to find out what is going on in your X configuration. What you could do stop the xserver from trying to load is telnet in and kill the xdm process. I hope this helps. I've had this happen to me. do it soon because everytime it is trying to load the xserver it appends the errors to /var/log/xdm-error file. email me if you need more info. -- Paul McDermott The Computer Braille Facility The University of Western Ontario University Community Centre 215 London, Ontario N6A 3K7 Phone: (519) 661-3061 Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Web Address: http://www.braille.uwo.ca/~paul On Thu, 26 Mar 1998 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Debian Users ! It is a good system and Debian GNU/Linux works perfectly on it, but a silly user like me managed to download about every single x-server there was on the dselect program and installed one of them (I can't remember which one). Anyway, the configuration was pretty dificult. I had to install a psaux mouse (the portable has a MINIDIM mouse port), the VGA was a super VGA and the board was something I can't remember. Anyway, the final question was if I wanted to start the x-server now, and answered Yes. The problem begins now: The system boots up properly, but when it gets to : Debian GNU/Linux 1.3 onyx tty1 onyx login: _ The system goes crazy and the screen goes off, then turns on as ScreenSaver mode, then flashes the login screen, and then restarts the cicle. Re: Anyone available that I can call???
Phil is on the right track. libc5... is a base package and gets installed during the base system. the other thing you could try is to dpkg --help and take a look at the force and remove options. try not to install base packages as much as possible. When installing debian you should look at the Packages file and "map" out a strategy on how you are going install the various packages. If you have something wrong with libc5... this file is considered the most important file on the system. If it is not working properly, you have serious problems. Good luck! I hope you still will you the debian distribution. It is one if not the most user-friendly distributons on the earth. playing wav files under netscape
Hi everybody, I am having a problem playing wav files in netscape. I edited the general preferences helpers audio/wav helper. I am using bplay_.096-1 i think. I get the following netscape error: Netscape:subprocess diagnostics (stdout/stderr) bplay: input file less then 20 bytes long I don't know what this error means or how to fix it. Re: xdm
Hi, what exactly is the problem with xdm? To get more information about the config file there should be a file in /usr/doc/X11/debian.README It tells you all of the switches and flags for the variables in the config file. Me and other people on the list can't help you if you are not more specific in your questions for help. I would be more then happy to help (if I can) you, but I need more information, ie error messages what you are seeing or not seeing on the screen. Hope to hear from you soon. Re: Video confrencing.
Hi Rick, yes there is it is called vic-cqcam it is in the unstable/x11 directory. I've installed it but have not tried it. Give me a shout when you have it running. Description: vic-cqcam is a video conference over the Internet This is a version of vic with a driver for the Connectix Color QuickCam. . Vic was designed with a flexible and extensible architecture to support heterogeneous environments and configurations. For example, in high bandwidth settings, multi-megabit full-motion JPEG streams can be sourced using hardware assisted compression, while in low bandwidth environments like the Internet, aggressive low bit-rate coding can be carried out in software. . Vic is based on the Draft Internet Standard Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) developed by the IETF Audio/Video Transport working group. RTP is an Vic is based on the Draft Internet Standard Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) developed by the IETF Audio/Video Transport working group. RTP is an application-level protocol implemented entirely within vic -- you need no special system enhancements to run RTP. Although vic can be run point-to-point using standard unicast IP addresses, it is primarily intended as a multiparty conferencing application. To make use of the conferencing capabilities, your system must support IP Multicast, and ideally, your network should be connected to the IP Multicast Backbone (MBone). Vic also runs over RTIP, the experimental real-time networking protocols from U.C. Berkeley's Tenet group and over ATM using Fore's SPANS API. . Vic provides only the video portion of a multimedia conference; audio, whiteboard, and session control tools are implemented as separate applications. Our audio tool is called vat and our whiteboard tool wb. UCL developed the session directory tool sdr. Other related applications include ISI's Multimedia Conference Control, mmcc, the Xerox PARC Network Video tool, nv and the INRIA Video-conferencing System, ivs. Vic is backward compatible with RTPv1 and can interoperate with both nv (v3.3) and ivs (v3.3). installed-size: 1206 Hope this helps, if you want to try it give me a shout. hi Lamar, I had something similar happen to me. The problem is in your /etc/X11/Xserver file the last line should contain the following: :0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X The reason why you are not getting anything on tty7 is that you are not starting your xserver. I hope this helps. Just for grins do a ps-aux to see if xdm is running.
