the install CDs.)

However, when I try to install any of the packages listed under
Synaptic, "gnome" and "gnome-desktop-environment" are listed under the
"To be removed" section. I don't want to remove GNOME from my box to
install other software. This occurs with any package I choose from the
list.

Why is Synaptic wanting to uninstall GNOME? Is there a setting or
configuration I need to change somewhere, so that this doesn't occur?

Thanks for any information on this situation.

Can anyone create the .deb package, so everybody can download it using
apt-get install.

I think we can create a program to install a Java Mozilla Plug-in and
include in it the JRE. If one creates a program, can package with it
the Sun's JRE.

See http://wiki.debian.net/index.cgi?JRE

(Note: Taking this back to the mailing list so others can benefit from
the discussion as well.)
The requirements for redistributing the JRE are very specific. You can
not also distribute something that is meant to supersede the
functionality of the JRE. Since Debian distributes Kaffe, we would be
violating the license.

We would agree with other organization to include its repositories in
sources.list
(co-official repository for Java).

Also, one of the other requirements is that you redistribute the JRE
with software that substantially adds to its functionality. As Mozilla
USES the JRE, but in no way ADDS to it, this would also be a violation
of the agreement. (The applets that the JRE might end up running THROUGH
Mozilla would add to it, but since Mozilla doesn't we cannot package the
two together.)

Because of this, the only way a non-Debian package could include the JRE
would be if it was a native Java program being packaged for Debian.

This is a good idea. What about a Java program that could optionally
abled or disabled by the user ???. It could include a JRE to run.

But
by doing this we would lose the benefit of distributing the JRE because
most people would want just the JRE and NOT the program that it comes
with.

It could be an ornamental (http://www.wiktionary.org/wiki/Ornamental )
program. This is, only usefull enough to create a package (some
limited/ornamental functionalities/usefullness).

And, finally, the biggest problem is that the JRE license states that
any software you distribute WITH the JRE must be under a license that
"protects Sun's interests consistent with the terms contained in" their
license. In other words, you can NOT distribute a GPL'd program with the
JRE.

Really, their license is a bad thing ;(
But an ornamental program would not be interesting for Sun ;) Nor for
us, excepting to package JRE in Debian ;)

On the other hand, we would claim a similar status to Windows:
"On Microsoft Windows platforms, but not in Linux, the Sun's Java 2
Runtime Environment's installer automatically installs the java and
javaw application launchers in a location that's on the operating
system's default system path. That means you don't have to worry about
finding the launchers to start your application, and you don't have to
provide instructions to your users for fiddling with the paths on their
systems".

This is a common path for all the Unices, including Linux ( if this
really exists, include this information in the Sun's webpage).

Regards.

it really because of the file system driver not compiled into the

that user can just download them and use it.

This error might be happening because Knoppix is not Debian. Last time I
did a Knoppix hard disk install, it used XFS. XFS is provided as a file
system driver module in some kernels (I'm pretty sure Sarge has it), but
you have to make sure that you add it to the initial ram disk in order to
boot properly.
Stock kernels don't compile XFS into the kernel because they want to keep
the kernel lean, and it's not explicitly required to have your file system
driver compiled in statically in order to use it. Stock kernels are all
about flexibility, so everything is compiled as a module. It's just that
the file system module is harder to use than the rest.
In any case, I could be wrong, if your file system isn't XFS. What
does /etc/fstab say? Also, are those modules in the initial ram disk?

I use ext3 for all my files partition.
My /etc/fstab is:
# filesystem mountpoint type options dump pass
/dev/hda7 / ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1
/dev/hda9 /var ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1

usbdevfs /proc/bus/usb usbdevfs defaults 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs defaults 0 0
I've tried one suggestion found from googling, to put ext2 after ext3.
something like:
/dev/hda7 / ext3,ext2 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1
but, that did not solve the problem also.

This is the big problem. Knoppix is not Debian and a Kernel update is
not easy (think you have to use Ext3 filesystem in the kernel).

I would like an easy way to update hard disk installed kernel in Knoppix

been updated in months and was generally buggy. I use the sun jre,

But I like blackdown, becuase making an apt-get install, it installs

Re: faq on choosing a debian distribution - draft 1

2004-10-24 Thread Pedro M (Morphix User)
Kamaraju Kusumanchi escribió:
Hi all
I read this list regularly. I find that people who want to try
Debian for the first time are often confused about the fact the there
are three debian distributions and do not know which one to choose. As
usual, everyone wants to do the right thing the first time. I made
this small FAQ to help them and would like to seek your expert
opinions. This is just a rough draft and will post the updated version
next week after receiving suggestions from all of you.
My questions are
1) Is it worth to make such a document/HOWTO? Do you think it will be
useful/useless?
2) Obviously the set of questions is not a complete list. I would like
to receive suggestions about new questions. If you can attach both
question and corresponding answers that would be great.
3) Any other advice?
***
choosing a debian distribution
***
1. How many Debian distributions are there?
Read http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-faq/ch-ftparchives.en.html#s-dists
. As it says, Debian comes in 3 distributions - stable, testing, unstable.
2. Which Debian distribution is better for me?
The answer is a bit complicated. It really depends on what you intend to do. The
best solution would be to ask a friend who runs debian. The following are
intended to supplement the information.
If you are worried about security and stability issues, install stable. period.
This is the most preferred way.
If you are a little bit daring, adventurous and do not mind having a system that
breaks once in a while then use unstable. Unstable is for experts who know what
they do.

If you are unsure, stick with the stable distribution.
If you are new to Debian, install stable.
3. You asked me to install stable, but in stable so and so hardware is not
detected/working. What should I do?
Try to google around and see if someone else is able to get it working in
stable. Most of the hardware would work fine with stable. But if you have one of
those state-of-the-art cutting edge hardware, it might not work with stable. If
this is the case, you might want to install/upgrade to unstable.
4. Will there be different different versions of packages in different
distributions?
Yes. Unstable has the most recent (latest) versions. But the packages in
unstable are not well tested and might have bugs.
On the other hand, stable contains old versions of the package. But this
package is well tested and (99.99%) will not have any bugs.
For example, when I started writing this document the different versions of apt
package are as follows
stable --- 0.5.4.0.1
testing --- 0.5.27
unstable --- 0.6.25
5. If I were to decide to change to another deistribution, Can I do that?
It is a one way process. You can go from stable --> testing --> unstable.
But the reverse direction is not "possible". So better be sure if you are
plannning to install/upgrade to unstable.
6. Did anyone really ask these questions?
Oh yeah. Too many to list here. Read the debian-user mailing list archive and
you know what I am talking about.
7. I am still confused. What did you say I should install?
The safest bet would be stable distribution

You could include this FAQ in http://wiki.debian.net where is an article
about stability.

Regards.

Re: Lost printing from OpenOffice; spadmin doesn't add printer

2004-09-29 Thread Pedro M. (Morphix User)
I am sure we need a standard, easy, free(freedom), free( gratis) system
for printing in Linux, in a similar way to Windows (relating to standard
and easy).

Regards.
Uwe Dippel escribió:
I found it impossible to generate a new printer with spadmin.
Though I'm running from su, "New Printer ..." only offers fax and PDF; the upper
"Add a Printer" is greyed out; just as the lower "Import printers ...".
Initially I had two printers defined and working. Since I moved office, the
parameters had to be changed.
I tried to add one; with the result as above (greyed out), changed one, without
success (seemed to not accept my new parameters).
Finally I deleted the existing ones to start from scratch. Now the field is
empty; I have all printers lost; and the "Add a Printer" still greyed out.

System-wise, lprng is doing a good job; I can use lpr without any trouble.
I was stupid enough to file a bug with OpenOffice, since this seems most
normal as I was told immediately:
"That's not a bug at all but shows that you are running CUPS (and the lpr you are
using in this case is most likely the CUPS backwards compatibility tool). In
this case adding a printer is disabled since you can, should and must do this
using your system printer administration tool."
I'm obviously too much of a newbie and still don't understand.
I never installed CUPS:

$ dpkg -l | grep cups
ii gnome-cups-man 0.18-2 CUPS printer admin tool for GNOME
ii libcupsys2-gnu 1.1.20final+rc Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - libs
ii libgnomecups1. 0.1.12-1 GNOME library for CUPS interaction
ii libgnomecupsui 0.18-2 UI extensions to libgnomecups
$
and don't want to use it.
I set the printers with lprngtool; and added them last time just a
few months back with spadmin.
I simply cannot print now; there is no printer available in OpenOffice
and nothing prints.

Can someone please give me a site or something that is comprehensible
enough to tell me how to get printing back for OpenOffice ??
And I prefer lprng compared to CUPS.
Thanks,
Uwe

Well, if you have scanned all the pages in about the same position,

you can write a script that does all the work in one step (containing

The imagemagick package contains 'convert' which can take pdf as input

Linux sg driver version: 3.1.25
Using libscg version 'schily-0.8'.

A good first step in diagnosing the problem would be to open a

mentioned?

We must offer a more easy tool than slackware (see above link).

The debian installer allows you to write the installer to one keychain,
plug it in, plug in a second that will hold the target system, and do a
straightforward installation to it without touching any local disk.
(Alternatively, you can boot the installer from a CD.)
Booting the result can be a little bit tricky; at least my computer will
not boot grub from a usb keychain.

That's a good new. I am going to include this information in the wiki.

Thanks.

About this topic, I suggest to the help-web-sites, create a form(ulary)

- the version (or simply, the last).
- the computer processor
and recieve the name of the kernel-image to load.

This would be helpfull for newbies.

On an ATAPI system you must use:

To burn a cd you have always to use dev=/dev/hdc.

I am sure we need a more easy configurator in Gnome... (graphical

Some ideas ??.

Hello Manu,

It looks like you're missing the sg module.
I've got an external Plexwriter 24/10/40U, which is recognised as:-
Linux sg driver version: 3.1.25
Using libscg version 'schily- 0.8'.
scsibus1:
 1,0,0 100) 'PLEXTOR' 'CD-RPX-W2410A'
'1.03' Removable CD-ROM

It works well.
I just did my first burn with it, the new Beta 3 Sarge Installer.
You might also find this handy:-

I think it would be fantastic if the whole thing including

Advantages are:
* Just one simple interface taking care of the searching / browsing /

* It is extremely user friendly

* Maintainer can very easily update information/documentation

It's a bit like running apt inside your browser.

Are people working on this?

Perhaps you misunderstood me.

And I do not intend to install another distro (morphix etc) in my box just in order to get my gnome run.

Any help is still highly appreciated.

I installed Gnome Morphix, because is Gnome for Debian ( Gnobian
http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/gnobian).

So, I had not to install Gnome in Debian, because I installed them both
at the same time ( Gnome Morphix ).

I suggested a compact installation ( Debian and Gnome at the same time;
remember that Morphix includes autodetection).
