ALSA instead of pulseaudio on new sid
Hi guys. I have a fairly new install of sid with the new fancy gnome3 and all the eye-candy tweaks. I don't really like it, but that's another story.. Anyway, before reinstalling sid I used to have the sound coming from ALSA..it was working great. Mic worked, SPDIF worked and I had real control over the volume level. Now I'm running pulseaudio. Which sucks! Digital out is mute, sound level seems to be reduced by 60-70% and I haven't even started trying to configure it for HDMI. I would really want to go back to ALSA, but I'm kind of afraid that it might break my install. I tried following some ubuntu howtos but I always end up with aptitude wanting to remove gnome-desktop-environment. Does any one have experience on how to go about for replacing pulseaudio? Or maybe some tips? -RV -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Kernel not counting trasmitted data
Hi all. At the office, we have a debian server to take care of routing transparent proxy'ing. I recently installed vnstat to monitor the bandwidth usage (turns out some of the employees spent their day downloading with uTorrent, but that's another story..) and for the last week or so I noticed that some of the values drastically dropped. The gateway server has two network interfaces, with eth0 connected to the local network and eth1 to the cisco router. Iptables takes care of the routing between them. The local i'face seems to be fine, but eth1's data is really hard to believe: r...@dl580:/home/config# ifconfig eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:03:47:42:5c:17 inet addr:10.0.1.2 Bcast:10.0.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: fe80::203:47ff:fe42:5c17/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:31640949 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:18811757 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:595968566 (568.3 MiB) TX bytes:128856216 (122.8 MiB) eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:03:47:42:5c:18 inet addr:*** Bcast:*** Mask:255.255.255.248 inet6 addr: fe80::203:47ff:fe42:5c18/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:7700 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:13057486 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:2652885 (2.5 MiB) TX bytes:1146875616 (1.0 GiB) Most of the traffic is inbound, so it should show up in the RX bytes for eth1. iptables..WTF???
Hi all. Couple years ago I set up a very basic script to have a machine (running SID) on my network to act as a router. Two network interfaces, one with a public IP and the other on the local LAN subnet. It does NAT as well as open some inbound ports (SSH, WWW). Today, at roughly 4PM, the firewall setup stopped working. I was still able to forward packets from a LAN client, but any connection originating from the box itself could not be established. I tried ping and traceroute but none of them went through. This is my firewall script: #!/bin/sh # Interface connected to Internet INTERNET=eth1 # Address connected to LAN LOCAL=10.0.1.0/24 # OpenVPN OV=172.16.0.0/16 # Clean old firewall iptables -F iptables -X iptables -t nat -F iptables -t nat -X iptables -t mangle -F iptables -t mangle -X # Load IPTABLES modules for NAT and IP conntrack support modprobe ip_conntrack modprobe ip_conntrack_ftp # Enable Forwarding echo 1 /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward # Enable Munin stats iptables -A INPUT -d PUBIP iptables -A OUTPUT -s PUBIP iptables -A FORWARD -i eth1 iptables -A INPUT -d 10.0.1.2 iptables -A OUTPUT -s 10.0.1.2 #iptables -A FORWARD -s 10.0.1.2 iptables -A FORWARD -i eth0 # Setting default filter policy iptables -P INPUT DROP iptables -P OUTPUT ACCEPT # Unlimited access to loop back iptables -A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT iptables -A OUTPUT -o lo -j ACCEPT # Allow UDP, DNS and Passive FTP iptables -A INPUT -i $INTERNET -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT # Accept some inbound services # HTTP iptables -A INPUT -j ACCEPT -p tcp --destination-port 80 -i eth1 # SSH iptables -A INPUT -j ACCEPT -p tcp --destination-port 22 -i eth1 # Mediabox P2P iptables -A FORWARD -i $INTERNET -p tcp --dport 9500 -j ACCEPT iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -i $INTERNET --dport 9500 -j DNAT --to-destination 10.0.1.11 iptables -A FORWARD -i $INTERNET -p tcp --dport 8112 -j ACCEPT iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -i $INTERNET --dport 8112 -j DNAT --to-destination 10.0.1.11 # block P2P #iptables -A FORWARD -m ipp2p --ipp2p -j DROP #iptables -A INPUT -m ipp2p --ipp2p -j DROP #iptables -A OUTPUT -m ipp2p --ipp2p -j DROP # set this system as a router for Rest of LAN iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o $INTERNET -j MASQUERADE iptables -A FORWARD -s $LOCAL -j ACCEPT # unlimited access to LAN iptables -A INPUT -s $LOCAL -j ACCEPT iptables -A OUTPUT -s $LOCAL -j ACCEPT # unlimited access to OPENVPN iptables -A INPUT -s $OV -j ACCEPT iptables -A OUTPUT -s $OV -j ACCEPT # DROP everything and Log it #iptables -A INPUT -j LOG iptables -A INPUT -j DROP Now I can get it to work only by commenting out the last line (iptables -A INPUT -j DROP). Bash email attachment
Hi all, I recently wrote a small content filter script (in bash) to use on my local Postfix installation. The script receives via pipe: the recipient and the sender's addresses then responds by sending back a message containing some body text and an image attachment. It works as it is supposed to do, but with some email clients the image is not displayed properly. Gmail, Yahoo and MS Outlook detect the image as an attachment, but Squirrelmail and my Blackberry only show garbled text. Grub/Grub2 fails with non-first root partition
Hi all. I am currently attempting to install Debian on a laptop that currently has only windows xp on it. Using the testing netinstall iso, i ran the setup process several times but I keep getting the same problem over and over. The partition tables is as follows: Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Disk identifier: 0xace22e9e Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hda1 * 1382430716248+ 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/hda23825679723880622+ 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/hda36798972923551290 83 Linux (I have also tried creating a separate /boot partition [hda3] before the root partition [hda4], but that didn't change the outcome) Debian installation works smoothly and the new system is correctly deployed on the laptop. Unfortunately I am never able to boot into it. Grub2 starts but after a while the message Unknown filesystem is printed and a rescue console is started. Only a few basic commands are available and none of them helped me figure out where the problem is. After booting into a live distro, I checked grub2's configuration files but those seemed fine too. As a desperate move, I tried to netinstall debian stable that comes with grub legacy. That installation was successful too but still I couldn't make it past grub, which returned Error 17. Despite having some good experience with linux systems, I am totally clueless on this one. Any suggestions? -RV -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact listmas...@lists.debian.org

Hi all. Some time ago aptitude decided I needed the package wx2.8-headers. Unfortunately, it failed while trying to install it. For a couple days I could still perform a safe-upgrade without too much trouble (the updated packages were installing and the broken one was the last). I am now compiling the hard way via the command line with a bunch of pkg-config statements in the gcc command. I guess I could write up a build.sh, but I would have liked to do it in a more standard way. As I said, I read several tutorials but none of them dealt with more than the basics. If you (or anyone else) knows about something else that could help me, I'd be happy to read it. Alternatively, have you considered simply sending them the binary with a small install script? Copy entire /usr
Hi all. I am in a sticky situation. I run remotely a server and one of the disks is starting to fail. Every couple days (or more, depends on the www traffic level) scsi drive sdc fails (with rejecting I/O to device bla bla bla). This a BIG problem because my /usr resides on sdc1, and everytime it happens I have to send somebody to kill the server and restart it. I figured, since I do not have physical access to the server, that the best choice would be copying the whole /usr to another drive and (hoping there are no problems while copying) change the required stuff in fstab. Before starting blindly cp'ing files, I would like to hear your advice on the process and if I have any chance of succeeding (or if you have another method that would work better) -Raven -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. As you seem to be unable to have a physical access to the server, I suppose you can not go to single user mode. If you try init S or init 1, you will probably loose you network connection. I would certainly try this : 1 - mount the / (root) partition a second time on a mount point (ie on /mnt) as Linux can do this. On this second mount point, you will not have the sub-filesystem sdc1 mounted on /mnt/usr. So you will be able to alter /usr on the root FS. 2 - rsync the bad /usr (sdc1) on /mnt/usr (it will theorically copy the contents of /usr (sdc1) on /usr (root), behind the one mounted from sdc1 3 - if sdc hangs, reboot and resume from (1), it will resume the copy 4 - remove the /usr line in the fstab ; 5 - reboot (the sdc1 fs will not be mounted over /usr) But this solution SHOULD work IN THEORY !!! I never tried it. someone might have a better idea. It worked! Yesterday I did a fresh debian testing install on one of our servers but it seems that the current proftpd version in the repositories is broken: dsrv:~# /etc/init.d/proftpd start Starting ftp server: proftpd/etc/init.d/proftpd: line 88: 3615 Segmentation fault start-stop-daemon --start --quiet --pidfile $PIDFILE --oknodo --exec $DAEMON -- $OPTIONS failed! dsrv:~# aptitude show proftpd Package: proftpd State: installed Automatically installed: no Version: 1.3.1-9 Priority: optional Section: net I am getting the same Segmentation fault error when starting it with proftpd --nodaemon. I am using the following modules: dsrv:~# cat /etc/proftpd/modules.conf ModulePath /usr/lib/proftpd # Allow only user root to load and unload modules, but allow everyone # to see which modules have been loaded ModuleControlsACLs insmod, rmmod allow user root ModuleControlsACLs lsmod allow user * LoadModule mod_sql_mysql.c LoadModule mod_quotatab.c LoadModule mod_quotatab_file.c LoadModule mod_quotatab_sql.c LoadModule mod_load.c LoadModule mod_ifsession.c Anybody experienced the same problem and have a fix/solution? -Raven -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. iptables whitelist rule
Hi I am currently implementing level7 packet filtering on my debian gateway with ipp2p. This has been done to prevent wireless users from using well known file sharing applications (edonkey, bittorrent, kazaa, ecc). The current iptables configuration that I have is doing everything very well. Now I want to be able to run the amuled daemon ON the debian router but I am not really sure how to tell iptables to whitelist the traffic that is not being forwarded. In other words, the ipp2p module should not drop the packets originating from/destinated to the router itself. Here is my current script: # Interface connected to Internet INTERNET=eth1 # Address connected to LAN LOCAL=10.0.1.0/24 # VPN VPN=5.0.0.0/8 # Clean old firewall iptables -F iptables -X iptables -t nat -F iptables -t nat -X iptables -t mangle -F iptables -t mangle -X # Load IPTABLES modules for NAT and IP conntrack support modprobe ip_conntrack modprobe ip_conntrack_ftp # Enable Forwarding echo 1 /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward # Enable Munin stats iptables -A INPUT -d 37.244.81.222 iptables -A OUTPUT -s 37.244.81.222 iptables -A FORWARD -i eth1 iptables -A INPUT -d 10.0.1.2 iptables -A OUTPUT -s 10.0.1.2 iptables -A FORWARD -i eth0 # Setting default filter policy iptables -P INPUT DROP iptables -P OUTPUT ACCEPT # Unlimited access to loop back iptables -A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT iptables -A OUTPUT -o lo -j ACCEPT # Allow UDP, DNS and Passive FTP iptables -A INPUT -i $INTERNET -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT # Block P2P iptables -A FORWARD -m ipp2p --ipp2p -j DROP iptables -A INPUT -m ipp2p --ipp2p -j DROP iptables -A OUTPUT -m ipp2p --ipp2p -j DROP # set this system as a router for Rest of LAN iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o $INTERNET -j MASQUERADE iptables -A FORWARD -s $LOCAL -j ACCEPT # unlimited access to LAN iptables -A INPUT -s $LOCAL -j ACCEPT iptables -A OUTPUT -s $LOCAL -j ACCEPT # unlimited access to VPN iptables -A INPUT -s $VPN -j ACCEPT iptables -A OUTPUT -s $VPN -j ACCEPT # DROP everything and Log it iptables -A INPUT -j LOG iptables -A INPUT -j DROP Thanks for your help guys -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. d-i
i can't seem to find d-i list in the list of mailing lists on the website, but regardless. LET IT BE KNOWN: that OldWorld PPC sub-arch will not be supported directly in the new installer. i think this sucks. 1) there are plenty of still functional oldworld machines out there 2) i think it shows an utter lack of consideration for recycling, re-use of older hardware and the environment 3) is totally irresponsible 4) devfs is broken, crufty, and will be totally gone by 2.7 very likely, and using this will make oldworld installs impossible (at least from d-i; it'll still be possible to install from woody floppies and dist-upgrade). go ahead and ban my IP or SMTPd, i'm seriously thinking of moving to a *BSD now, and i'll make sure that anyone and everyone i know that uses oldworlds *DON'T* use debian sarge stable. eric côté aka simonrvn on IRC -- ##-## | ,''`. http://www.debian.org/ | http://www.nuit.ca/ | | : :' : Debian GNU/Linux| http://simonraven.nuit.ca/ | | `. `' | PGP key ID: 6169 BE0C 0891 A038 | | `- | | ##-## Due to the directive validating Software Patents[1] that will be voted on at the European Parliament[2], I have decided to protest.

Re: Era... Internet Expl (Por qué no plataforma Linux?)
