Re: networked multi-function colour laser printers SOLVED
Just a quick thank you to all who offered advice and help. The errant Samsung hardware has started working again, so my search for a replacement is deferred -- at least for now. In case it helps anybody else, the things that brought the machine back to life were rebooting the printer, clearing the network settings to factory default, reinstalling the Samsung driver (version 1-00-27.04) on my desktop PC, rebooting the printer... I might have thought it was the network settings, but I happen to have printed them out both before and after, and there is absolutely no difference. Whatever, it is great while it works. richard -- Richard Lyons -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? networked multi-function colour laser printers
Hi, Perhaps someone here has already solved this: I have wasted another 20 hours trying to get sane (or anything that scans) to see a networked Samsung CLX-4195FN. And this is s journey I have travelled before with a B+W Brother MFP which ran for a few years under various flavours of Debian with the help of endless playing with the drivers provided by Brother. Samsung also provide drivers, and I have had the machine operating under Arch and Debian Stable for some months. But I need to run sid to have later versions of other software, hence my current predicament. I need to replace the Samsung with something that really will run under sid. I am looking for a colour laser MFC (no need for fax). It must be networked (ethernet is fine, though wifi would be ok), and modestly priced -- small business model, say in the £200-400 range. I see that HP and OKI both claim to offer Linux drivers, for example. The sane-project.org website never has the current models, however, so I would like to hear any positive experience others have had before buying another expensive failure. Nvidia chipset problems on Presario
I have an HP Compaq Presario CQ60 laptop. Having no high-speed connection, I have installed Debian 5.0.2 from the dvd set. This gives me kernel· 2.6.26-2-686. The Presario has an nvidia chipset (see output of lspci below). The installer evidently fails to recognise this or doesn't have the right drivers. Console writes to screen in a manner reminiscent of an old teletype terminal. I installed the nvidia driver so that X now runs acceptably fast and at the correct resolution (1366 x 768). But the console remains slow. Also there is no sound. Presumably both these are driver issues. For the sound, it seems clear the wrong modules are loaded, see output of 'lsmod | grep snd' below.· A further problem which may be connected is that the keyboard regularly freezes. This appears to happen always after the ppp connection (to a mobile phone acting as a GPRS modem) has been dropped by the supplier, but this may be a coincidence. When it happens, it is impossible to give keyboard input to any X-window, or to jump to a console. It does not appear to be a "sleep" issue, as it does not occur after closing the lid and leaving the laptop overnight, for example. How do I correct these, given that I cannot do a major upgrade as there is only a slow internet connection here? I used to think standard batteries were a better idea too, but they don't perform anywhere near as well as the L-ion flat ones most cameras now use. The rechargeeables, both NiCad and NiMH, are a good idea in principle, but lose charge when not in use and become ineffective surprisingly quickly in my experience. I was in Budapest last week with a friend who had to buy new AAs for his camera. It takes a lot of persistence to get two consecutive pages to print with margins that do not split onto two pages a layout intended to be on one page. I don't know if this will survive restarting firefox, but I succeeded with the following: - In page settings | click on papersize to get a menu with 'manage personalised paper size' and select this. - Create a new papersize called 'real A4' and set all margins to zero. - Open "about:config", accepting a warning about voiding warranty (!) - Alter _all_ of the following settings. If you don't do all, then they reset themselves when printing a page and have to be redone for the next page. It may be that some of these can be omitted, there were too many to permutate completely, but I spent 3 hours trying before succeeding. There are several sets of settings for bottom, right , left, and top - where I set these the same I list them below with a wildcard (*) to save time: print.postscript.paper_size real A4 print.print_edge_* 0 print.print_extra_margin 0 print.print_footer_* print.print_header_* print.print_unwritable_margin_bottom -1 print.print_unwritable_margin_left -1 print.print_unwritable_margin_right -1 print.print_unwritable_margin_top-2 print.printer_print_to_file.print_footer* print.printer_print_to_file.print_header* print.printer_print_to_file.print_margin_bottom 0.1 print.printer_print_to_file.print_margin_right 0.1 print.printer_print_to_file.print_margin_left0.5 print.printer_print_to_file.print_margin_top 0.1 print.printer_print_to_file.print_paper_name real A4 print.printer_print_to_file.print_unwriteable_margin_* 0 print.printer_hplj5.print_edge_* 0 print.printer_hplj5.print_footer_* print.printer_hplj5.print_header_* print.printer_hplj5.print_unwritable_margin_bottom -1 print.printer_hplj5.print_unwritable_margin_left -1 print.printer_hplj5.print_unwritable_margin_right-1 print.printer_hplj5.print_unwritable_margin_top -2 print.printer_hplj5.print_margin_bottom 0.1 print.printer_hplj5.print_margin_right0.1 print.printer_hplj5.print_margin_left 0.5 print.printer_hplj5.print_margin_top 0.1 print.printer_hplj5.print_paper_name real A4 print.printer_hplj5.print_unwriteable_margin_*0 Obviously, the printername will vary depending on what is set up on a particular system. iceweasel and libflashplayer
On an etch box, I recently hit a website that insisted I should upgrade to flashplayer 9. No sweat, I did. Now I notice BBC and other sites keep telling me I need to upgrade flashplayer. about:plugins says I have flashplayer 7 and flashplayer 9. In that order. I suppose this to be the problem, though I know no way to remove flashplayer 7 from firefox, sorry, iceweasel. locate shows only one libflashplayer.so on my system, that in /usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins/ (I am ignoring the copy in my download directory, which must be irrelevant). I have grepped around in iceweasel trying to find a config file with the defunct pointer to no avail. Any ideas? But I use/d LyX in testing and etch. I do give the full path. It is an eps because that has always been the default expected by latex (though you do have to omit the extension in the command, so \includegraphics{/path/to/that} includes /path/to/that.eps), and I have never before had any problem with this or other eps inclusions. richard -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Well, yes, perhaps that is the old latex package in Debian. These templates have worked for years with no problem. It is only now with a fresh install (but retaining my old /home partition) that they suddenly fail. I am not sure all the following detail helps much, but here it comes: The commands to process the file are given from a script and are essentially latex template dvips template It is actually in a perl script and says system ("latex $outfile && dvips $outf && ps2pdf $outf.ps $path$bod.pdf"); The section of the template which triggers it is line 25 of this letterheading: \documentclass[english,a4paper]{letter} \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} \usepackage[utf8]{inputenc} \usepackage{geometry} \geometry{verbose,a4paper,tmargin=144pt,bmargin=72pt,lmargin=96pt,rmargin=60pt} \usepackage{array} \usepackage{graphicx} \makeatletter \usepackage{babel} \makeatother \pagestyle{empty} \begin{document} \vspace*{-120pt} %% letterhead with se1 logo 5 \begin{tabular}{b{135pt} b{43pt}>{\raggedright}b{80pt} b{130pt}} %\begin{tabular}{b{140pt}|>{\raggedright}b{130pt}|b{180pt}} \parbox[b]{134pt}{\begin{flushleft} \textsf{Richard Lyons} \end{flushleft}}& \parbox[b]{43pt} {\includegraphics{/home/richard/0/ico/14p5b-25mm}} & \parbox[b]{80pt}{\textsf{Coign House, }\\ \textsf{14 London Road}\\ \textsf{Southwark}\\ \textsf{London}\\ \textsf{SE1 - 6JZ}}& \parbox[b]{130pt}{\textsf{\emph{email:}} [EMAIL PROTECTED] }\\ \textsf{\emph{telephone:}} \textsf{(020)79.28.65.01}\\ \textsf{\emph{facsimile:}} \textsf{(08707)62.68.14}}\\ \end{tabular} ... It looks as though latex completes normally with Output written on marcello08c03-print.dvi (1 page, 1484 bytes). And the error message is as I reported while dvips is running: dvips: Could not find figure file /home/richard/0/ico/14p5b-25mm.eps; continuing The resulting ps file is perfect but lacking the images. The file is readable: $ ls -l /home/richard/0/ico/14p5b-25mm.eps -rw-r--r-- 1 richard richard 137562 2006-10-05 11:37 /home/richard/0/ico/14p5b-25mm.eps And the eps extension has been correctly assumed so I suppose it is still the default as it was with latex. richard -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". I've just found texlive on a new etch install cannot find graphics called with includegraphics{}. These are files that ran with Latex, and have '\usepackage{graphicx}'. The only error message is dvips: Could not find figure file /home/richard/foo/bar.eps; continuing The graphics files are still there and permissions are ok. Is this a problem with the debian package, or an inherent characteristic of tex-live. I.e. do I have to revert to latex or look for some additional package? That daemon in the tennis shoes, the puffer fish, Tux and that Hear hear! Not so much high school as infantile. Most of us grew out of soft toys by the age of 8. If linux weren't so damned brilliant, I would shun it merely for the retarded graphics. That said, I suppose a more "corporate" penguin could be designed... As to the ugly Debian swirl, well I've become used to it, but I do not see what it is supposed to represent. Part of our problem is that OS is owned by a community of hackers, whereas the big firms of proprietary software can employ graphic designers and PR people to create the slick packaging necessary to sell their crap. On the other hand, I have to say that I am also disenchanted with the continual revamping of corporate "identities", often throwing away well-known and easily identified logos and house styles for blander more modern replacements. So I would like to see the Debian swirl transmogrified into a style that looks professional and reliable rather than necessarily throwing it out. With my designer cap on, I would also admit the possibility that the baby-toy penguin, which has become so intimately associated with Linux, might also be recycled into an acceptable logo. Knopper to some extent has succeeded in doing this in the graphics for the Knoppix distros, with the cunning combination of tech drawing and cuddly plump proportions. I say 'to some extent' because, in fact, cuddly is not what is needed on the office desk (during work hours at least). We really should be seeking a more reliable, sturdy, businesslike image, though preferably without becoming boring and indistinguishable from the corporate world. richard -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". mail headers with exim4 using ISP smarthost
I am slightly puzzled by the following headers in mail I send out from this home network on DSL via the ISP's smtp server. Yes it all sounds idyllic, which is why I allowed the installer to do its default thing and install lvm and choose its own partitioning -- I assumed it was simple to resize and extend later. Then when I came to read the man pages and google for advice on the rather inscrutable commands to re-allocate the space between the partitions, there seemed to be warnings of terrible possible data losses. I am sorry, but I don't remember the details. I asked on this list and got little solace, tried to shrink one partition in order to expand another, and found that it was impossible, and gave up rather feebly. Something like that, anyway. As I said, I am at home with fdisk and parted. And can boot from knoppix and copy a whole partition off when I need to, whereas knoppix doesn't seem to know about the lvm partitions. Probably my lack of knowledge, though: I am sure knoppix can mount the LVM in capable hands. I'd better erase the LVM and repartition hda, then install etch cleanly and swap back in my /home, /usr/local, most of the rest of /usr, /var/www, ... and then copy selected bits of /etc too. It is not so much a question of backups, as most of the variable user data is already on separate partitions. A pity. It was running sweetly enough before. mkinitrd and glibc version problem in etch
Hi all. Silly situation: I have been wanting to release my etch install from the LVM so as to be able to adjust the partitioning. The arrangement was: /dev/mapper/Debian-root on / type ext3 (rw,errors=remount-ro) /dev/hda1 on /boot type ext3 (rw) /dev/mapper/Debian-home on /home type ext3 (rw) /dev/mapper/Debian-tmp on /tmp type ext3 (rw) /dev/hdb2 on /usr type ext3 (rw) /dev/mapper/Debian-var on /var type ext3 (rw) /dev/hdb2 on /usr type ext3 (rw) /usr used also to be in the LVM, but I ran out of space so I simply copied to hdb (which is 80GB, against 20GB of hda). Obviously /home and /tmp present no problems - I can simply copy them wherever I want and remount. I decided to copy the root partition and var to two new partitons on hdb, then mount the new root to /mnt/hdb13 (or whatever) and mount all the other filesystems into that, mount -o bind /dev /mnt/hdb13, and mount -t proc none /mnt/hdb13 so as to be able to chroot there and make a new initrd. But this gave me # mkinitramfs -o boot/initrd.img-2.6.18-5-686r -r /dev/hdb13 2.6.18-5-686 find: /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.4' not found (required by find) find: /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.4' not found (required by find) find: /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.4' not found (required by find) find: /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.4' not found (required by find) find: /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.4' not found (required by find) locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory find: /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.4' not found (required by find) Problem 1: How do I solve that? Problem 2: I had the bright idea to install another kernel while in the chroot, and let the install make its own initrd. I saw in aptitude that linux-image-2.6.18-6-686 was available (the current kernel was 2.6.18-5-686). But this also failed to install, so I tried to remove it prior to finding the relevant glibc. The removal failed too: /usr/bin/perl: /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.4' not found (required by /usr/bin/perl) Selecting previously deselected package linux-image-2.6.18-6-686. Simply plugging in the modem (via the microfilter) gives it a connection. It is pppoe but you don't need to manage it at all. The modem/router acts as dhcp server on the inside ethernet. You just need dhclient set up. Once that connects, use ifconfig for some info. There is usually a web interface to control the modem/router. Generally it is visible by pointing your browser at 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.254 or similar. Probably, it will have a factory preset administrator name and password, which you will need to get from the ISP, or the info they sent on paper or cd. When you have them, you need to change them, obviously (they are likely to be something dumb like admin/admin). The modem/router frequently has a pretty reasonable firewall built-in. You should be able to configure the firewall, see stats about the connection (including the external static IP), see the users connected, and more (they frequently come with wi-fi, and the settings for that will also be accessible). The interface is usually an irritatingly dumbed-down set of pages accessed in an inscrutable menu hierarchy, with the important bits almost impossible to find -- but they are there somewhere. So: set up dhclient and get the admin logon and password from the ISP and you should be away... And the same for the other one, (which is acer-aspire not acer-laptop BTW). In each case unmuted 'Front' and put volumes up etc in alsamixer. Onboard sound card is in my case listed as Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04) but the rest seems identical. It plays normally with 'doze, so not a hardware issue. Someone on debian-laptop suggested getting a usb soundcard and sidestepping the problem (blacklisting the normal soundcard modules). I found Texmaker a wonderful tool when I first started on latex. In fact I still use texmaker when I am feeling lazy. (And/or Kile, almost identical, but uses some KDE stuff and so loads more slowly first time). The Latex guide in the help menu is a great beginner's resource and the easy tools for most common latex markup are a quick way to get familiar with the structure of Latex. You can also compile and view either dvi ps of pdf from inside the editor. Vim Latexsuite does these things too, but you need some vim skills to enjoy it. -- richard -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Err... Embarrassed question. Suppose you are reading du with mutt. You clear away all the stuff you don't want to follow with a series of ^d and then $... and then you realize you accidentally deleted a thread of infinite wisdom you were going to save and have engraved in gold. A hundred times. It says ALSA is ready to use, and wishes me a lot of fun. As long as it's happy... In fact the link given earlier in the thread to http://newbiedoc.berlios.de/wiki/Sound_in_Debian_GNU/Linux says: Alsaconf is so buggy that it is best not to use it at the moment (according to [bug no 432678]). You now have to use udevtrigger instead of alsaconf. But that did nothing useful either as far as I could tell. I'm not sure where I saw it documented years ago, but ps2pdf does obey gs commands, so 'ps2pdf -sPAPERSIZE=a4 myfile.ps' (output filename is optional and defaults to myfile.pdf) will also work, and is occasionally useful when you want to use papapersize other than the system default. If you just want the photoalbum (not music and other bells and whistles), I think qdig should do it for you. It is a gallery in one file, written in php, so ought to be cross-platform. It can be configured to work on a hierarchy of directories in various ways and the 'look' is also configurable. You could then just access the top level directory, in which the script sits, via a web-browser on any computer with a webserver. There is no Debian package AFAIK but it is easily available as a tarball. HTH -- richard -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? It's surprisingly unknown: people are always complaining about learning latex, but with texmaker you hardly need to. Kile is the same thing (originally built on it, I believe) but with a load of kde stuff running so texmaker starts in a fraction of the time. Recommended. Perhaps surprisingly, I have often done this by hand. Choose a very fine grit -- the best in the UK is "Brasso", intended for polishing brass, as you might guess. Use a soft clean cloth. You can get quite serious scratches out by multiple applications and polishes. The surface acquires a slight "wave" where you work on it most, but they seem to be readable usually. I have been doing the same sort of thing -- in more complex templates -- for some years. I've always felt it was a bit clumsy to finish up with all these files cluttering up my nice clean directories. So now you have spurred me into writing a script to take a given letter -- just the bit from the address to the end of the content -- and add the template letterhead, the date, and the closing, put the heading in bold, then latex, dvips, save a tagline on the original body file to say which template was used, what date, and what style of closing, clean up the intermediate files and make tea. Well, I nearly did it too, but I couldn't persuade bash to stop stripping out backslashes, so I've started again in perl. Nearly there now. So thanks for the stimulation. I've been putting this off for years. Now I'll be able to write letters mostly in plain text. :-) But it doesn't yet make tea... -- richard -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? I have now set up mutt and mailcap as you and Benjamin suggest and the whole issue is greatly eased. The reply function also now picks up the w3m output as someone else indicated so it is pretty convenient.
