name of it, so apt-get is useless to me.

Help???

Deciphering the output from tcpflow?

2004-11-02 Thread Robert Tilley
To discover the identity of the process sending unknown traffic on eth0, it
was suggested that I run tcpflow. The result and another question follows:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/home/tilleyrw/tcpflow-dumps# ls -S
065.032.005.052.00110-192.168.001.103.33847

192.168.001.103.33846-065.032.005.052.00110
192.168.001.103.33847-065.032.005.052.00110

Now that I know the specifics of From and To about the traffic, how does that
help me in terms of identifying the offending process IDs?

Increasing Screen Resolution

2004-06-07 Thread Robert Tilley
My screen resolution is currently 1024x768. The desired resolution is
1280x1024.

I have dpkg-reconfigure'd xserver-xfree86, edited /etc/X11/XF86Config,
edited /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, and experimented with KRandR. The only mode
that is still present is 1280x1024, however 1024x768 is still used. Nothing
I have done has changed this.

Needless to say, I need help. What can I do to increase
my screen resolution to 1280x1024?

OpenOffice.org Margins?

2003-09-27 Thread Robert Tilley
I am moving some documents from M$ Word to my home computer that uses Debian
Linux. The document in question was saved in the RTF format from Word and
then re-opened in OOo Writer. The issue with the document is margin-spacing.

I wish to have a document-wide left and right margin of one (1) inch.
Selecting All (ctrl-A) and then adjusting the margins does not move the
margins to a document-wide setting. I suspect this is because in Word, the
document had many Section Break, Next Page-marks thus causing many
different margin settings to exist. This should be easy to correct, now that
I know the probable cause.

Without starting a flame-war, I would like to know a good editor for long
text-based documents. I have a set of documents that I am, as mentioned,
transferring from M$ Word to an open standard (corporate bylaws, corporate
minutes, etc.) that only need basic formatting (bold, underline, heading,
etc.) for text files.

RealTek 8139 Problems

2003-08-02 Thread Robert Tilley
When I installed my system with the Debian 3.0 CD, kernel 2.2.0 was installed.
I selected to install the RealTek 8139 drivers and my NIC has been
functioning perfectly.

I've attempted to install 2.4.19, 2.4.21, and 2.6.0-test2. During a
menuconfig, I specify the RealTek 8139 drivers to be installed as part of the
kernel. However, when I reboot into the fresh kernel my NIC is undetected
and I have no internet access. I must reboot into 2.2.0 if my NIC is to be
used. I've even gone so far as to install _all_ RealTek drivers and no luck.

Any ideas?

Bob

Debian 2.2 Installation

2000-09-23 Thread Robert Tilley
Installation and beginning configuration of a Debian 2.2 system has been
eluding me for several days now.

I am running on an Intel Celeron 300A system with a RIVA TNT2 Ultra, a
SoundBlaster Live card, an HP 7200 CD-burner and a Memorex CD-202E. I'm
having trouble configuring X-windows and sound.

I am a current Mandrake user who also finds the more competant package
management under GNU-Debian Linux quite seductive. From the information
I've read, the RPM system that Mandrake subscribes to pales in comparison to
the power of Debian package management. Updating your entire system at once
sounds like a dream. (Similar to the Microsoft Windows Update which is a
nightmare!)

Do instructions regarding the installation and configuration of Debian that
are more detailed than the ones at www.debian.org exist? I find myself
repeatedly asking, Why can't Debian programmers use a more 'friendly'
installer such as Mandrake uses?.

Thank you,

Robert Tilley
