No audio after recent upgrade
I am running Sid, 64bit. My motherboard is an ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe, with Nvidia chipset. During a recent upgrade (not dist-upgrade) using Synaptic, I lost video and mouse control in the X-system. I rebooted the system and found that the kernel had upgraded from 2.6.29-2-amd64 to 2.6.30-1-amd64. I use the Nvidia graphics driver, which broke during the upgrade. Temporarily using the NV driver, I ran Synaptic again (because I couldn't be sure it had completed before the X crash), then updated the Nvidia driver modules, restoring my X system. I have since found that I have no audio. After a recent reinstall of Debian (a different story) my system was running Pulseaudio ( I am not familiar with this, as I always relied on Alsa in the past). I have attached the output of lsmod, showing which modules are currently loaded. I am at a loss as to how to troubleshoot this audio problem, and would greatly appreciate any suggestions and pointers. Thanks much. It just stops while showing OOo's splash screen, with CPU usage 0% and no output at all on command line. Indeed it is difficult to locate the problem, because I cannot find an options like "-verbose" or "-debug" to obtain more information: the man page of ooffice is for OOo version 2, and "ooffice -help" lists little useful options. I tried "ooffice -nologo", then tried to rename the folder "~/.openoffice.org/", then tried to remove package "openoffice.org-gtk" and "openoffice.org-gnome", but none of those efforts works. Any ideas? Thanks! Best Regards, Wang Long I don't know if this is the same problem, but yesterday I just fixed a related issue on my system (AMD64, Sid). When trying to start OpenOffice from the pull-down menu in Gnome, I got the "please wait" clock symbol, but the program never started. Running "sudo apt-cache showpkg openoffice.org" revealed many missing modules, including openoffice.org-writer, which prevented the word processor from running (it wasn't installed). The problem was solved by running "sudo apt-get install -reinstall openoffice.org" . Don't know if this problem is the same as yours, but thought I'd offer it as something to check. Good luck. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact listmas...@lists.debian.org

Check the output of the "lsof ..." command again; it should be empty if no process accesses the sound devices. Then you can test if your other applications can play sound now. Esd will probably run again the next time you start Gnome (logging in via gdm, I assume). You can either try to deactivate esd in Gnome's setup (I don't use Gnome so I don't know any details about this) or you can try to configure your other applications to play sound via esd (how to do that depends on which applications you use). Kino problem - doesn't read files
I am running an AMD64 dual-core machine, on an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard.I'm running Debian-64, Sarge (I think). My sources.list file is attached. My question is: are the linux-* source files modified when made in to kernel-source-*.deb files? Yes. Go to http://packages.debian.org/unstable/devel/kernel-source-2.6.9 and read the "More information" section. There you can see that kernel-source-2.6.9 consists of [kernel-source-2.6.9_2.6.9.orig.tar.gz] which is identical to linux-2.6.9.tar.gz from kernel.org, and [kernel-source-2.6.9_2.6.9-1.diff.gz] which are the debian-specific modifications to the source package. Will the linux-* source files compile and build properly using the kernel-package tools? They should compile just fine. If so, I'd like to use the higher rev linux-* source files, rather than wait for them to show up on the unstable sites as kernel-source-*.deb files. No need to. There are only experimental sources on kernel.org and 2.6.9 is the latest stable version (which is also available as kernel-source.deb). See the link above to download it from your preferred debian mirror. joerg -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Anyway, thanks to all who provided suggestions to my compile problem. Regards, Russ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Need help XFree86
I have a problem trying to get XFree86 4.X to work on my Compaq Presario 5170. XFree86 3.X works fine. When this machine was running windows, the video adapter was identified as 3D Rage LT Pro. Under Linux, I use the ATI Mach64 driver under XFree86 3.X, so I tried the ATI driver under XFree86 4.X. I get a black screen, it never faults back to text terminal from GDM. I have attached gzipped copies of my config files, and the error log. I'm hoping that someone else reading this has already solved this problem for this machine, as there are many of them out there. New ADSL user - need net and firewall help
Please help. For many years I have been using Debian Linux on machines at home, including a machine dedicated for dial-up access and masquerading for my home lan. My lan also consists of two windows machines for family members. DSL just became available in my area, and we subscribed. Now I need help getting my lan reconfigured to use the DSL modem and still protect my lan from the outside world. The modem is set up as a NAT device, and is configured for DHCP on my side of the interface. I've never used DHCP under Linux, and don't have a server set up. I access the modem via Ethernet, which means my firewall machine now needs a second card so my Lan can remain connected. I can access the internet with my Linux machine by setting my IP address manually to the default IP in the modem, which is 192.168.1.2. The modem retains 192.168.1.1 for itself, and translates to a different set of addresses on the 'internet' side. To complicate things, the address the modem expects me to access it with conflicts with my home lan, which uses 192.168.1.0 addresses. So, it appears I may have to reconfigure my home lan for a different block of addresses for the second ethernet card to access, and bridge between the two ethernet cards in my linux gateway. I have little actual experience with routing and firewalls, I tend to learn what I need for the task at hand, and then leave things alone unless they break. Consequently, I forget most of what I learn by the time I need it again. I have heard of PPPOE, and my provider has mentioned it to me, but they say the modem is set up for DHCP. My complication comes because I want to retain my own ip masquerading and firewall capability. Can anyone help me or point me to some step-by step reference material? Re: Broken mail - Upgrade Exim3 to Exim4
I have a very basic setup - a smarthost that I dial up to, and a local network (lan) in my home. My error was with the local interfaces option - I specified specific IP addresses for all machines on my network, instead of using the default. I used dpkg-reconfigure to go back and correct my mistake. Now my system is working well. (Except that I can't connect to my inn2 with a news reader, but that's another problem). Broken mail - Upgrade Exim3 to Exim4
I upgraded today from Exim3 to Exim4. Now, fetchmail fails to pull my mail from my ISP. I can send mail to myself locally from the console, and read it with Pine. So, local delivery seems to be working. I can send mail out from machine via my ISP, so outbound is working. Can anyone offer things to check? I was hoping that the upgrade and config process would read and use the configuration from Exim3. Thanks for any help. Russell, I'd like to thank you again for all your help. This is what makes Debian great (IMO). Now that Zope is upgraded, dselect and apt-get were able to finish installing my XWindows system and other programs. I am now fully up and functioning again. Thanks again! Thanks for the continued help. Attached are the results of 'whereis python' and 'ls -l /usr/bin/python'. The symlink points to python2.3. And yet, the zope pre-removal script encounters errors in python1.5, which makes me think it is explicitly seeking and calling routines from the earlier version. More thoughts? Re: Broken Zope, Python, xbase-clients, etc
Hi Russell, I ran apt-get update, then apt-get install python. I did not specify a version. The system stated I am already at the latest version. I then ran apt-get install --reinstall --fix-broken zope. The log looks the same. If you still have a log of the session I sent previously, please notice that the python routines which are run seem to be from /usr/lib/python1.5, even though python2.3 is installed. Does Zope explicitly look for version 1.5? I'm really at a loss as to what is going on here. Re: Broken Zope, Python, xbase-clients, etc
Hi Russell, From your email, should I assume that Zope requires a version of Python between 2.1-3 and 2.2? A listing of /usr/lib shows python1.5, python2.0, python2.1, python2.2, and python2.3. Must I downgrade and force the system to install python2.1 for the Zope scripts to work? On Mon, 8 Sep 2003, Russell Shaw wrote: > Russ Cook wrote: > > Hi Russell, > > Thanks for the continued help. Russell, The sources.list file was OK, but it referenced a local mirror for apt-move, which wasn't valid yet. I corrected that, and ran 'apt-get update' again, and then ran apt-get install -t testing zope, as you recommend. Attached is that script file. The errors are essentially the same. Re: Broken Zope, Python, xbase-clients, etc
Russell, I did as you suggested, but it made no difference in the errors I received. I scripted the output of apt-get, which I have compressed and attached. Can you make sense of this? The errors seem to occur in /usr/lib/python1.5/* and /usr/lib/zope/lib/python/* Thanks for any additional suggestions. Broken Zope, Python, xbase-clients, etc
Please help. I tried to upgrade my system, after a long period of stable operation. During the upgrade attempt, use apt-get dselect-upgrade, Zope failed to upgrade, due to pre remove script failure. Zope is currently installed at 2.3.3-1 level, trying to upgrade to 2.6.1-10. It is trying to run python-base, which apparently is no longer available, and not on my system. I did reinstall python1.5_1.5.2-27_i386.deb and python1.5-dev_1.5.2-27_i386.deb, from ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/p/python1.5. Additional problems are that startx no longer exists on my system, and I can't run X. I don't know if this is directly related, but dselect and apt-get fail during all attempts to upgrade due to zope and python script errors. I am not a sophisticated user, and apparently have done myself damage. Can anyone offer some steps for me to try to restore my system? I will be happy to provide a copy of 'dpkg -l' or any logs to anyone willing to help. Thanks so much, Russ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? run-parts
Please help. I have made an executable script to be run when my ppp link comes up. I placed this script in the directory /etc/ppp/ip-up.d and gave it the same owner and flags as the other scripts in that directory. However, the script doesn't execute. Executing run-parts --test does not show this script. I can invoke it manually. Can anyone help? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Re: Debian and IPV6
As you suspected, when started with the -- -6 option, sshd does not listen for ipv4 traffic on port 22. When I try to connect with ssh -4, the sshd negotiates a -6 connection anyway. I suppose this makes since, since declaring -- -6 says to operate ONLY in IPV6. What I need is for the daemon to listen for both protocols. Does anyone know if it is possible? Does it require a recompile or special configure flag when installing? Thanks for any help. Re: Debian and IPV6
Mark, Thanks for the reply. I tried your suggestion of adding the -- -6 option to the start-stop-daemon lines in /etc/init.d/ssh. I then tried to connect to the host with ssh and ssh -6. Both attempts succeded, as shown in the subsequent netstat -A inet6 -an Script started on Sun Dec 29 09:38:04 2002 p90:/home/russ# netstat -A inet6 -an Active Internet connections (servers and established) Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State tcp0 0 :::80 :::*LISTEN tcp0 0 :::22 :::*LISTEN tcp0 0 :::192.168.1.1:22 :::192.168.1.2:3238 ESTABLISHED tcp0 0 3ffe:b80:1853:1:250::22 3ffe:b80:1853:1:25:3239 ESTABLISHED p90:/home/russ# exit Script done on Sun Dec 29 09:38:19 2002 It represents my IPv4 connection with a IPv6 style address, however. Thanks for the reply. I checked as suggested, and sshd is configured to listen on port 22. It is not started with -4 option, and no ListenAddresses are specified (they are commented out). Debian and IPV6
I have enabled IP6 on my home network, configured my network, and obtained tunneling and ip addressed through Freenet6. I can ping6 all machines on my network, but ssh -6 does not work. I get errors that the connection was refused. SSH works fine with Ipv4 protocol. I can telnet6 to IPV6 web servers on the web, and Mozilla works fine. Can anyone tell me what I need to check on my network machines? I suspect perhaps a problem in /etc/services or /etc/protocols, but don't see anything wrong. Thanks for any suggestions. Please disregard my previous email. On my fifth kernel compile, I now have ipmasquerading. I enabled and included everything under the sun with regard to ppp, iptables, ipchains, and ipmasquerading. Undoubtedly, I have a bloated kernel with features I don't need, but it works now. I now need to educate myself on the differences between 2.4 and 2.2 with respect to iptables/ipchains. Is there a concise synopsis anywhere in the Linux Documentation Project that I can reference? Thanks to all who have replied. Happy Holidays! Thanks for the reply. I'm still in a quandary. I have installed .deb packages for iptables and ipmasq. Re: sound problem -ES1869
Thanks for the tip. I tried setting the IRQ to 10, as suggested with modprobe sb esstype=1869 irq=10 I then got the error: kernel: sb: Interrupt test on IRQ10 failed - Probable IRQ conflict looking at /proc/interrupts shows: 0: timer 1: keyboard 2: cascade 10: soundblaster 11: eth0 12: PS/2 Mouse 14: ide0 15: ide1 There is a second column between these two labeled CPUO. It has a non zero value for all but 2, 10, NMI, and ERR. Can anyone offer any further ideas? sound problem -ES1869
I have a Compaq presario with audio chip on the motherboard. The chip is ES1869. Previous advice got me this far ... I load the module with 'modprobe sb esstype=1869.' I get this error: ESS chip ES1869 specified kernel: sb: Interrupt test of IRQ7 failed - Probable IRQ conflict. The utility 'saytime' works, but with long delays between words. I can identify no cards using IRQ 7. My ethernet card uses IRQ 11. Can anyone help me troubleshoot? Thanks much, Russ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". No ip-masquerade after upgrade 2.2.19 to 2.4.20
I have a home network of 5 machines running Linux (for me) and Windows (for wife and son). I have a masquerading gateway machine for internet access. I update this machine rarely, as problems encountered affect the whole family. I recently took the plunge and upgraded the kernel on that machine from 2.2.19 to 2.4.20. Now, it no longer provides internet access for the lan. From the gateway's console, I can access the internet, so ppp is working. The machine is accessible from the other computers, so the eth0 funtions are working. Can anyone help me troubleshoot this problem? In a rare moment of foresight, I kept the previous kernel and labeled it 'safe' in lilo.conf, so I can still use that kernel, and currently am. Re: ES1869 sound chip driver
I have recompiled my kernel, including SB support as a module. Using modprobe SB esstype=1869 now gives me sound. However, when I play a wave file, I get choppy, repetitive cuts. I'm using the program wavp. It seems to play each portion approximately 4 times before moving on to the next segment. The utility 'saytime' works, but runs with long pauses before each word. Much slower than with my other machine, using a Gravis Ultrasound card. Can you offer any tips for tuning up what I have? Re: Problems with 2.4. series kernels and Adaptec scsi card
OK. I compiled a kernel with the --initrd option. I added 'initrd=/initrd.img' to lilo.conf. I added 'do_initrd := Yes' to /etc/kernel-pkg.conf I cannot run lilo, because it complains that /initrd.img doesn't exist. I can't install the kernel, because it complains that it failed to create initrd image. Can you tell me what I may have failed to do? Problems with 2.4. series kernels and Adaptec scsi card
I am still running the 2.2 series kernels on my machine, because I've been unsuccessful compiling and running a 2.4 series kernel. I have an Adaptec AHA-2940 scsi card. When the kernel tries to boot, I get SCB-related errors. I'm not certain what they are, I think they are control block errors. I can't send an error log, because the system crashes with a kernel panic. I have no such errors with the 2.2 series kernels. Can anyone offer assistance or hints? Re: Proble - XFree86 4.2 and ATI 3D Rage LT Pro
Another respondent suggested I run XFree86 -configure to get a starting config file. I did, and it worked - although low res and distorted. I then restored my original guess at synch rates, and got my original symptons, which confirms your suggestion that my problem is related to sync rates. I have a Compaq Presario MV500 monitor, and have no timing data. The Compaq web page offers no data, either. Can anyone help? I did at your suggestion. And it worked - thanks. I now have a display, although low res and distorted. Another person suggested it was probably sync rates - so, my monitor is a Compaq Presario MV500. I've been to their web page and can find no specifics on horizontal and verticle refresh rates. Proble - XFree86 4.2 and ATI 3D Rage LT Pro
I have a Compaq Presario that I'm promoting from my kid's windows machine to my Linux machine (he got a new, faster machine). I tried installing the Debian X packages for version 4.1, but could not get it to run. I'm using a 3D Rage LT Pro. The sympton is that when I run startx, the screen goes black. It doesn't fault out and return to text mode - it just remains black. I've identified the window manager to use, and have tried changing the window manager. I've attached the XFree86 log file. I have XWindows successfully running on another machine, with a different video card. Can anyone help? Thanks much, Russ The -bpp option is no longer supported. cdrecord problems
I have had no difficulty burning CDs until after my recent 'apt-get upgrade.' The CDRECORD package warned me that I was not running a 2.4 kernel, so I should compile the source. I did this using 'apt-get source' and installed the packages. Now I get errors when trying to burn CDs. I have attached a log file. Can anyone help? Thanks, but those seem to be written for DOS. I don't have access to DOS on this machine - it is Linux only. Re: No partition table
I have also read the referenced mini-HowTos. Additional info - the Maxtor drive came with a utility called EZ-Drive, which is still active during boot. I have a syslog entry which reads: Partition check: hda: [EZD] [remap 0->1] Do I need to overwrite the first sector to restore the MBR? I can still boot from floppy, but I'm at a loss as to how to restore my hard drive so I can boot directly from it. Thanks for any help. Re: No partition table
Thanks for the reply. I ran gpart on the drive, and the result matches what Lilo wrote to /boot/boot.0300 , so I didn't rewrite the partition table. The first partition is marked bootable. Can you offer any other suggestions? No partition table
I have a 30 GB Maxtor hard drive, with a 15 MB boot partition as the first partition. This is followed by root and swap. Apparently, I have somehow corrupted my partition table, because on boot I get the message NO PT, HIT ANY KEY TO CONTINUE When I do so, Lilo responds with LIL- and hangs. I can still boot from floppy, but only the older 2.2.X kernels. I have read the Large Disk How-To, but can't figure out what's wrong. Can anyone help? Thanks much, Russ

WordPerfect 8 problem (won't run)
I have WordPerfect 8 on CD, and recently reinstalled it (I had a system crash, and had to reload everything.) It used to run fine, before I reloaded Debian (unstable) and all my software. Now, when I try to start WordPerfect, I get the following error: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ./wp [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ /usr/share/Wp/wpbin/xwp: can't load library 'libXt.so.6' This library exists in /usr/X11R6/lib [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/X11R6/lib$ ls -l libXt.* -rw-r--r--1 root root 395608 Jun 6 13:40 libXt.a lrwxrwxrwx1 root root 12 Sep 5 22:14 libXt.so libXt.so.6.0 lrwxrwxrwx1 root root 12 Sep 5 22:14 libXt.so.6 libXt.so.6.0 -rwxr-xr-x1 root root 344669 Jun 6 13:40 libXt.so.6.0 The install documentation states that WordPerfect 8 requires X11R5. I'm running X11R6, and I have libc5 installed. Can anyone tell me from the info above what I need to get things working again? I'll be happy to send more info, if needed. Thanks much, Russ

Thanks for the reply. I should have mentioned that I already have agpgart.o loaded successfully. I don't believe that is the problem. Need help with XFree86
Howdy! My wife bought me a new computer for Christmas, an E-machine with the i810 chipset. I was able to get X11 working under TurboLinux (the CD came with the LAN card I bought), but I'm having difficulty with Debian. Attached are the XF86Config file and the XFree86 log file. Re: help news
Ok. Running rnews leaves me with a large batch file in /var/spool/news/in.coming, but nothing in the various /var/spool/news/ directories. How do I get the batch file processed by localhost and posted to the appropriate subdirectories? Thanks a lot for the help so far. Colin, Thanks for the reply. I have set up the get-news.conf file with server, username, and password. What options must I use to get the news downloaded and sent to Cnews? help news
I am trying to use Suck and Cnews to download articles from my ISP and deliver to a local news server for offline reading with Netscape Communicator. I (think) I have Suck and Cnews properly configured - at least, I can manually initiate a news dump with the command "suck news.flash.net -U myusername -P mypasswd -dm /var/spool/news/in.coming" I can see that message get loaded to in.coming. But, nothing happens from there. When using Netscape, it connects to my localhost, but the newsgroups always show as empty. The files don't get moved from in.coming to the appropriate directories under /var/spool/news. Are there additional programs or scripts that I need besides Suck and Cnews to complete the process? If so, could someone please point me to them, or provide me some sample scripts? I would like to have certain newsgroups automatically downloaded periodically and available offline to my browser. I don't seem to have any cron scripts installed to do this. Any help appreciated. Thanks, Russ
exim trouble
I am no longer able to receive mail from my ISP. This is a sudden occurence, and due to no intentional action on my part. I'm attaching the mainlog file in the hope that someone can give me some advice regarding what to check. Exim is running as a daemon. mainlog> 2000-11-17 18:28:12 unexpected disconnection while reading SMTP data from localhost [127.0.0.1] I'll check the mailing list archives to see if this message finds its way to the list. (My browser works) Thanks for any help. Regards, Russ
Re: need help - inn2
Thanks for the reply. The news daemon is running as rc.news, as called by /etc/init.d/inn2. Also running is innwatch. My active file exists. The problem appears (to me) to be an inability to connect to my ISP news server. I use shadow passwords on my system. Is this a problem? Is there a way to log the correspondence between my system and my ISP while inn2 tries to connect? Any help appreciated. Regards, Russ On 12 Nov 2000, John S. J.
