modifying 5snort to add more detail to email report

2005-11-11 Thread Kretzer, Jason R (Big Sandy)
Hello all,

I am using snort on Debian sarge. I am using 5snort to email daily
reports on the snort alert file. Sometimes the report lists several
events but does not give any details. Does anyone know how to set this
to where it will report EVERY entry in the alert log? I figure it has
something to do with a threshold setting somewhere but I cannot find it.
I have posted this to the snort-users list but as always my relatively
newbie questions are being ignored.

Below I have pasted a sample of one of the no detail emails.

Thanks,

It does not add any groups that I am aware of. I believe the apache
server is started by root and then is switched to the group nogroup
and the user nobody. A top or similar command will tell you what
users are running each process.

It is this very reason that I use 'Reply All' to respond to list emails.
Then I can pick and choose which addresses to send it to. You can't cry

Hello,

What services do I

Many people say so, but it is not true.

Ext2 takes some precautions to reduce fragmentation a bit (in

it is
 a feature of the filesystem.

While we're on the subject, how *do* you defragment an MSDOS file system
when you're running Linux. I'm faced with a MSDOS-formatted USB drive
that is used to ferry data to a plugin for a Nintendo DS that
requires each file to be contiguous.

The default is the 386 kernel. After install, apt-get the 686

No, don't. Compile your own kernel that has the 4GB_RAM support
enabled. None of the packaged Debian kernels have it. Without it you
will only get access to about 900 MB.

 Hi

Would anyone know of a good and / or it using a windows xserver

I googled and I came across this site.

 http://x.cygwin.com/

Ok let me explain this one:
cygwin is a complete (nearly) Posix environment in windows. If install
it
and run it you come to a bash promp where most familar utilitiesare
avilable. If you install X you can use the x server. I use it on my
windows
box to run GNU emacs. (I could use NT Emacs, but the cygwin Emacs works
correctly, for just about everything, whereas those parts that depend on
external utities often do not work right on NTEmacs.)

If you use cygwin's ssh with x tunneling you can get to your desktop of
your
debian system on your windows box.

 Hallo!

Probleme verdaut und sortiert (u.a. Mailinglisten).

 Hintergrund passieren:

 - meine ausgehenden Mails werden an zwei verschiedene Accounts
   geschickt
 - meine eingehenden Mails werden von zwei Accounts abgeholt
 - meine Mails werden in die verschiedenen Mailinglisten
   einsortiert

Danach möchte ich das Mailprogramm öffnen und meine vorsortierten
 Mails in zwei Mailkonten vorfinden.

Gnome desktop

2000-04-12 Thread Sandy Shapiro
I installed Debian (slink) and the X Window system. My manual that came
with the CD, Learning Debian Gnu/Linux has a section on using GNOME.

Most of the things they refer to are there, but two are missing: home
directory icon and File Manager. I suspect they didn't get installed. I
used dselect to check the CD Rom, but I can't find any Gnome related files
that are uninstalled.

Are they listed under another name? Is there some other way to complete
the installation? I kind of enjoy using Gnome, and I would like to find
and install the rest of it.

Thanks,

Sandy Shapiro

Re: Gnome desktop

2000-04-12 Thread Sandy Shapiro
I think I am already doing that, althought I may not have done it
correctly. I edited Xsession and added the lines:

fvwm2
exec /usr/bin/gnome-session

I also tried adding the line:

gmc

but that didn't make any difference.

Did I leave something out, or do I need to do this differently?

Thanks,
Sandy

Alternitvely, you could use gnome-session which will run gmc and the
gnome panel (an anything from previous sessions) for you. Create a
.xinitrc file in your users home directory and include the following
line:

gnome-session

Hope this helps.
Johnny.

They are both the same think. You need the gmc package, and just run
gmc when you are in X windows.

yes, it lists the name of the isp

---end quoted text---

This is similar to a problem I had (still have?).
Upon dialling up to my isp, the default route was
eth0 rather than ppp0. This meant ping, and any nameserver
request was directed along eth0 rather than to the
appropriate location ppp0, and thus those utilities
never returned with any kind of successful result.
(I'm running a local ethernet in addition to dialing
up to my isp).

If you think this might be your problem, a way to check
is to

  cat /proc/net/route

Here it is:
Dest Gateway Flags RefCnt Use Metric Mask MTU Window IRTT
42006E89 00050 0 0 00
ppp0 42006E89 00030 0 00
0 ppp0

Does this help?
Thanks,
Sandy

(as running route to see the list of routes is futile, or at least very
time-consuming).

If the last entry is not ppp0, try the following commands

route del default eth0 (or whatever the device is on that last line)
route add default ppp0

RE: ppp problem

2000-04-11 Thread Sandy Shapiro

? Okay I think we might have the problem, because you said name of the
ISP. Here is my file:

search shadypond.com
nameserver 127.0.0.1

Yours should look something like that.
after nameserver, put the IP address of your ISP's nameserver, NOT the
literal hostname; it has to be numeric.

Yes, that fixed the problem!

Thank you very much,

Sandy

printer in staroffice

2000-04-08 Thread Sandy Shapiro
I am using Debian slink.

I installed StarOffice 5.1. When I go to print something, I get pages of
what looks like lists.

I went to Printer Setup and tried installing different printers, but it
didn't make any difference -- I just get pages and pages of these lists.

The printer works fine otherwise in Debian.

Is there some tweak I can do?

Thanks,

Sandy

Wordperfect for Linux

2000-04-06 Thread Sandy Shapiro
I have Debian 2.1 (Slink).

I downloaded Wordperfect 8 for Linux (guilg00.gz).

During the install I get numerous error messages. It seems to be looking
for subdirectories that don't exist on my system, and the program won't
run.

Will Wordperfect only work on the Corel Linux, or is there a way to get it
to work on Debian?

Thanks,

Sandy Shapiro

I tried it and returned it in favor or Debian Gnu/Linux package.

On one machine it refused to install, it took a week to connect with tech
support who said I had a bad CD Rom drive (which is not true).

On another machine I couldn't get the printer to work nor could I get the
modem to stay online for more than 10 seconds.

According to Corel news groups, many are having similar problems. Those
who get it to work, however, love it.

I suspect the Corel release is still more of a beta than a finished
product.

So far, I have been happy with the Debian GNU/Linux package, and the
manual it comes with is far superior to the Corel manual

I think something must be missing.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Desktop

2000-03-19 Thread Sandy Shapiro
First, I want to thank all who helped me install my printer. Running
magicfilterconfig was the anwser.

Now I would like to know how to enable the GNOME desktop. It came with my
Debian/GNU Linux package, and I tried using dselect.

So far I have several window managers available: fvwm95, olwm, icewm,
wmaker, and scwm. One of them automatically loads at boot up.

I have searched through the various applications in the window manager,
but I see no desktop. Do I have to edit a configuration file somewhere? Or
do I need to go through the dselect process again?

Thanks,

Re: Help with networking a new install

1999-06-16 Thread Sandy Kear
Try this:

1) find out what irq and i/o address the card is using. If it's a PnP, use
whatever setup software/jumper is needed to force it into a free irq and
i/o address

2) edit /etc/modules so that it contains
ne.o io=0x240,irq=10 (using whatever io and irq that you set the card to)
and follow the instructions at the top of the file regarding auto

This should get the card working. As for DHCP, I can't help.

good luck

how to use DHCP in the slink install, so I used floppies for the base

Is there a way to use DHCP in the install, and for it to detect which IO
address the card uses, and if there is, how? Also, (more preferrably,)
how do I load the card and start up DHCP once the base system is
installed?

MIT Kerberos Version 5, Release 1.0.4 - Debian build problems

1998-03-30 Thread Alec Sandy
Hi.

I was wondering if any one had successfully built MIT Kerberos
Version 5 under Debian? We've not yet succeeded so I would
appreciate any hints/tips from anyone who has been successful.

The machine in question is a PC (Pentium II) running Debian 1.3 and
kernel version 2.0.33. We've successfully compiled this release of Kerberos
under Slackware and RedHat Linux (Pentiums and 486's) as well under AIX and
SunOS (with gcc).

The 'make' process bombs before completion after a successful 'configure.'
The error message doesn't seem particularly edifying to me but I am happy to
forward it to any interested parties.

Regards, Alec
