NT dos not see FAT32 for one. But unfortunatly you can't convert from FAT32 to
FAT16.

Colour Map Problem

1999-03-27 Thread Shanta McBain
Hi

After much fooling around I have Communicator running but The problem now is
the Colour map. Netscape requires true colour I
can only seem to get 4 bit susdo colour. How can I get 8 bit or higher colour.
In this mode Netscape goes black and White not
to useful. Real hard on the eyes too as it sift in and out of colour as you
move focus to other xwindows or off netscape.

I would also like to use my windows 95 user directory for netscape can I point
netscape there? This would keep my mail in
order insted of leaving mail on the server then downloading again in windows.

This may be true but there is no instructions for the newbie to do that. I had
to get bind
working before my system would log onto my provider. The bind setup takes care
of it for you.

Yes and YESS If you don't have a cd you are stuck with this scenario.

Definitely worth the effort. If you don't have a CD this is the root that I
hacked out
to get a reasonable smooth install.

Download the floppy disk install.
Download wvdial. The dialer to make getting on line easy.
Download Bind. The local DNS server.
Make the install set as per instructions.
Copy wvdial & bind to a disk. I think they will fit. I left mine on the hard
drive.

Install from the floppy set.

dselect will run automatically. set the download install to FTP.
You will not be able to install yet as. will not have PPP and Bind setup yet. I
have
both the stock stable and slink added to my list.
You can edit this list manually later or add the dist/slink/main etc. now. If
you do it
now you will have to reenter all the links as it completely rewrites the field.

Alt f2 to another shell.

find the bind*.deb on the floppy or hard drive If it is on the hard drive. You
will have
to mount the drive it is on.

dpkg -i bind* and answer the prompts.
dpkg will ask you if you what to start bind say yes you need this running to be
able to
access the net.

Then find the wvdial*.deb
dpkg-i wvdial*.deb give it your provider phone # etc.

run the dialer

alt F1 back to dselect and check your connection. It will log into
ftp.debian.org and
verify it can find the available files list

when done you are dropped by default to update file list in the main menu. do
so and
replace list of files.

Select your files.
This method take a lot of time but you are on the leading edge of file
concurrentsy.

I update my files once a week.

This took many failed and partial installs. but I learned setup in dos and you
can't
give up. Debian Linux is by far worth the effort.

The Netscape program has an configuration file that has root access by default
to No
you can reverse this but as Andrei said in his reply this is a breach of
security. Why
netscape has a problem and the rest of the options don't I don't know. Just
what the
problem is would also be of interest

One may have to set a switch in the Netscape config file to allow all users to
have
rights to the program.

Got things working with this method. Product was easy to install even with out
the .deb
that I found in Dselect later. BUT I am now into a scenario of a time limet on
the
software.

I guess I can get the info about the card and try the kernel approach suggested
in
another message. Or spring for the cash and buy the program.

Thanks for the advice and the learning experience. It just gets better.

I personal don't like WP HTML it put hard spaces into your document so if a
browser is
in a different resolution your page will not get rendered properly. WP8 has
been ported
to Linux and is available from Corel. I have yet to get it going though so I
still use
my Win version.

For you needs though it seems that WP8 port or a until that puts in the codes
you need.

You are right Dreamweaver, Coldfusion (the one I use for HTML and Perl) are
great
products. I play with the page in Dreamwerver and Coldfusion till it looks good
then
move it into Perl.

Rumor from the makers that they are porting Coldfusion to Linux, with luck one
more of
the reasons for using windows will disappear.

PCI Modems and Trident cards

1999-03-17 Thread Shanta McBain
Hi

I have a PCI modem which I cant seem to get Linux to see. There also
dose not seem to be a Trident 975 driver for X windows.

Do I have to run the PCI module, which I installed with dselect of the
Debian website? Will this program detect the modem?

Re: Linux install problem

After trying everything that fdisk had to offer I used cfdisk and it did
what it was supped to do. Where fdisk fell sort of the mark cfdisk
didn't. I am up and running again.

Installing with out a cd is a major headache. I have to down load with
the windows machine, transfer the file to a disk then into the linux
machine. Cant even ftp from the windows machine as the ftp dos not
appear to be in the base setup from floppies.

Linux install problem

1998-06-14 Thread Shanta McBain
Hi

I have a HD 350 meg Caviar 2340. I cannot change the partitions. Fdisk
says that there are two partition The dos primary and a extended
secondary. It reports that there are logical partitions on the
secondary. Cant delete the secondary partition as the logical partitions
exist. likely the linux primary and swap. It will not delete them as
delete partitions dose not see the partitions.

Is there a linux tool that will fix the problem?

Thanks Shanta

fsck failed Please repair manually

Control-d will exit this shell and continue system start up

give root password for maintenance (or type control-d for normal

Control-d takes one back to the same point.

rm: /root.bush_profile: Read-only file system
mv: replace '/root/.bush_profile' , overriding mode 0755?
y takes one

asks to change password

cannot lock the password file; try again later
passwrd[47]: can't lock password file.

What now?

I have tried fdisking the disk but it will not remove the partions. to
start again.
drive has dos and extended dos (Linux). What is worng here?

hi

Deselect will exit on error that it cannot find the file vmlinuz.old in
the base dir. The file shows on a ls. you can mv to a new name. and back
but you cant cp it or open it with ae.

This effectively stops me from installing most of the packages.

what is wrong here and how can I correct it?

Networking with Novell and Win95

1998-05-26 Thread Shanta McBain
Hi

I am in the process of setting up a Dabian Linux system. The root that I
use to update the Dabian files is, download on Win95 to Novell server,
boot Linux machine to Novell client move files to dos partition. reboot
to Linux and use dselect.

I have the Novell 2000 card activated now I would like to get the
windows system to see the Linux system and the Linux system to see the
Novell and Win95 system.

I am getting closer from the docs but I find it confusing to say the
least. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Libc6 is also a problem I can't seem to find it
