Yes, I succeeded in compiling KDE, but I needed to download the latest release of Qt from Troll-tech and compile it from source before I could get it to work. I found that the current qt-dev package cannot be used with my mixed libc5/libc6 system. When I tried using the Debian qt-dev, kpanel had a huge memory leak and other aspects of KDE behaved erratically. Ben. Hi. I have tried the latest KDE .deb packages there and have found that the kfm file manager locks up and core-dumps on a regular basis. I have had more luck compiling from scratch, but currently I can't get kpanel to compile because I seem to be missing something called 'msgfmt'. Apparently my friends who have openwindows have it, but I haven't been able to locate it in Debian. Finally, KDE is impressive, but I think before I switch from my current WM to KDE for good, I would like to see them slim it down and make it run faster. Right now, even with 32M, I really notice that it is taking a big chunk out of my memory, and when I have other fat apps like Netscape Communicator going at the same time, the whole system really suffers. Ahh. Thanks! That was a bit obscure. I did manage to get a copy from someone else, but I'd prefer to have the Debian version. I have another question about KDE: So far I have been unsuccessful at building a KDE which has a working kpanel. Am I missing something? kpanel seems to chew up all available memory and I end up having to kill it off. I'm wondering if this is something peculiar to Debian, or whether it's just because kpanel is currently in an unstable state. Hm. I've looked in the old localebin and new locales packages and neither of them contain msgfmt, so now I'm really stumped. Where does msgfmt come from? Ben.
