So after an aptitude update, I did an aptitude dist-upgrade (something I hadn't done since at least 6-12 months -- I did a number of updates of specific packages in the mean time, though). aptitude offered me a solution which required removing a lot of packages (old KDE 3.5 ones), installing a lot of new ones, and updating some. The install went fine, without any error messages. I now have a bunch of KDE 4.3.1 packages (version 4:4.3.4-1, the latest in squeeze). Actually, the patch given here: http://bugzilla.kernel.org/attachment.cgi?id=22001 solved the problem for a few people. As for me, the problem is not annoying me that much that I will go and compile my own kernel. I use the trick of starting a second user, and switch back and forth until the brightness come back to a decent level, waiting for 2.6.31 hoping it will solve it. Is there any brand of laptops which comes with reasonably priced batteries (say, costing substantially less than 10% of the total laptop price)? Would you ever buy a car -- or even a mobile phone -- having a battery that cost 14% of the entire car/phone retail price? Anybody care to share? 1. This is spare parts. Unfortunately, there cost has nothing to do with the price of whatever you bought at first. Build a car from spare parts, you will pay it a few hundred times the price of a new one. 2. There are different quality of batteries, mainly dependind on the number of cells they contain. acpi video driver and 2.6.30
Following my previous post (2.6.30 - Brightness does not work) I contacted the maintainer of acer-wmi. Here is the content of my mail and his quick answer: Hi Carlos First, let me thank you for your work on getting Acer laptop working with Linux. Now, since my Debian Squeeze kernel went from 2.6.28 to 2.6.30, backlight setting does not work any longer, and the brightness seems to be set at random level at boot time. My laptop is an aspire 5715Z. dmesg gives: dmesg |grep video [7.161248] acer-wmi: Brightness must be controlled by generic video driver [ 27.366381] ACPI Error (video-0537): Current brightness invalid [20090320] and dmesg |grep acer [7.140188] acer-wmi: Acer Laptop ACPI-WMI Extras [7.161248] acer-wmi: Brightness must be controlled by generic video driver Also, there is no folder named backlight under /sys/devices/acer-wmi/platform/ with kernel 2.6.30. Should you need other information, please fill free to contact me and the answer This, and the above messages, mean that the generic ACPI video driver is taking control of the backlight, and not acer-wmi (acer-wmi, and most of the other laptop specific platform drivers, will let the generic ACPI video driver handle brightness, etc, if they are able to). Unfortunately, I'm not that familiar with it, so you'd need to talk to the maintainers of that instead. -Carlos So, it seems to me that I should investigate toward ACPI video driver. OK, but I don't have any idea where to start to be able to give useful information to the maintainer of this module (I don't even know how to get the proper name of this module). At that point, it's obvious that any help will be most welcome. Thanks in advance Thierry -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Since I've kinda hacked a new xorg.conf file since I first posted and am down to one error ie missing x.ttcid-conf.d directory I'll probably refrain from doing this now. Thanks for the help, it will probably help someone in the future I'm sure. You can make it and test it. It doesnt install automaticcally. If you like it, then you copy it on top of the old one.
