Q: pkg version in DSA-3436-1

2016-01-09 Thread Thilo Six
Hello

today DSA-3436-1 for openssl was released. According to the DSA the new version
for jessie is 1.0.1f-1, but current openssl version in jessie is
1.0.1k-3+deb8u2.

Now according to:
% command dpkg --compare-versions 1.0.1k-3+deb8u2 lt 1.0.1f-1

the new version would sort below what is currently already in the archive.
I do wonder about this, or am i missing something? Should this be reported?

Thanks.

kind regards,

 Thilo

I do not know mint but with debian wheezy it is easy to turn off/on IPv6 on the
fly:

/etc/sysctl.d/ipv6.conf

# Disable IPv6
net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6=1
---/

then you need to activate those settings with:
# sysctl -p /etc/sysctl.d/*.conf

All of the said is right. I will make just a little adddition. IMO it is better
to use 'fc-cache -rv' instead. As '-r' will also remove no longer available
fonts from the cache which '-f' does not.

i have question regarding insserv. I found a strange behavior to me and i would
like to know if this on purpose.

# insserv -s | grep mountkernfs.sh
S:01:S:mountkernfs.sh

# find /etc/rc[S0-6].d/ -iname "*mountkernfs.sh" -type l -exec unlink {} +
# find /etc/rc[S0-6].d/ -iname "*mountkernfs.sh" -type l

# insserv -s | grep mountkernfs.sh
S:01:S:mountkernfs.sh

So 'insserv -s' displays what it thinks should be there instead of just
displaying what actually is there on disk?

insserv(8)
-s, --showall
  Output runlevel and sequence information. Do not update
  symlinks.

If the above is on purpose should this text be stated more precisely?

Re: administration of initscripts

2013-04-20 Thread Thilo Six
Hello

Excerpt from Roger Leigh:

--  --
> update-rc.d foo disable|enable
>
> is one method.
--  --

i did played further around with this. First have a look at this:

# find /etc/rc[S0-6].d/ -iname '*mountkernfs.sh*'
/etc/rcS.d/S01mountkernfs.sh

# update-rc.d mountkernfs.sh disable
update-rc.d: using dependency based boot sequencing
insserv: warning: current start runlevel(s) (empty) of script `mountkernfs.sh'
overrides LSB defaults (S).
insserv: warning: current stop runlevel(s) (S) of script `mountkernfs.sh'
overrides LSB defaults (empty).

# find /etc/rc[S0-6].d/ -iname '*mountkernfs.sh*'
/etc/rcS.d/K01mountkernfs.sh

As you can see update-rc.d complains, but only that the initscript defaults are
getting overwritten. Now look at this:

# find /etc/rc[S0-6].d/ -iname '*mountkernfs.sh*'
/etc/rcS.d/S01mountkernfs.sh

# rc-update del mountkernfs.sh
insserv: Service mountkernfs has to be enabled to start service udev
insserv: Service mountkernfs has to be enabled to start service keyboard-setup
insserv: Service mountkernfs has to be enabled to start service mountdevsubfs
insserv: Service mountkernfs has to be enabled to start service networking
insserv: Service mountkernfs has to be enabled to start service procps
insserv: exiting now!

# find /etc/rc[S0-6].d/ -iname '*mountkernfs.sh*'
/etc/rc1.d/K01mountkernfs.sh

insserv clearly complains instead that other services are affected by this
change. Generally to a admin insserv seems to be nicer API over update-rc.d to
me. Apart from that, by this i found a major bug in rc-update(). Will fix that.

rc-update() 1.0

2013-04-17 Thread Thilo Six
Hello

you might have read:

In case you are interested i updated rc-update() to be able to handle several

# rc-update enable|disable|show   ...

The API has changed (not good), but i consider the feature addition significant
enough to be worthwhile this breakage.

Since i consider this new version now feature complete it is 1.0! ;)

Yes, the man page says it swaps the S for a K.
e.g. say we have the following link:
/etc/rc2.d/K10cups

Then afaik - and please correct if i am wrong - init will call the stop part of
this initscript when ever runlevel 2 is entered. So basically during each boot
process. Why should we spent resources on that?
Therefor rc-update() places those links instead only in runlevel 1 where they
might even be useful without wasting time on them during bootup, nor shutdown.

Thank you for your help. I am aware of the existents of 3rd party managing tools
of this kind and always wondered how well they are actually integrated.
As has been mentioned in this thread some of them even break.
Apart from that i dislike the idea to install yet an other package everywhere

I was looking for the "offical" way of dealing with initscript for some time
now. If you look online mostly update-rc.d is recommended in such discussions.

but e.g. compare:
update-rc.d cups stop 80 0 1 .

with:
rc-update cups del

Really the former is a API written to be used by computers and it does a good
job there, but it isn't all that good when being used by humans.

I agree with you here.

Basically with a default debian install there also come some functionality that
i simply do not need. Those i purge rather soon.
Other additional functionality like printing i *might* use someday. So i won't
purge cups for that reason but not starting cups (and some other services)
reduce startup times noticeable.
As others already rightly stated that it is a virtue to turn off not used
listening ports.

Basically administration of initscripts and the decision of which services are
run is the main domain of the local admin.
The question should not be: Why would you do that? but How do you do that?

> What is more complicated than this. If you want it then install it.
> If you don't want it then remove or purge it. With those two commands
> all management is handled automatically.

I named use cases for this. Also i conducted that remove/purge isn't always an
option.

> And therefore I must ask. What more management do you need? Anything
> else is truly unusual.

What i was really looking for is a easy to use API for an human admin to
include/exclude specific services at boot time.
Nothing more nothing less.

If look through several discussions where users ask howto "enable / disable
services in debian" you come rather soon to the conclusion that there does not
seem to be an official way of doing things.
If this thread does nothing else then making it more prominent that the official
way in debian is to 'update-rc.d foo disable|enable' then this would be a good
outcome IMO.

> This doesn't mean there isn't a valid case for different run levels.
> There are. I have just never needed them myself. So I am seriously

I until now i do not have a real need for different runlevels either. But i do
have a strong need to manage the one runlevel i actually use the way i say and
that in actually an easy way.

administration of initscripts

2013-04-14 Thread Thilo Six
...in debian has been no pleasure for some time now.

Hello readers.

Well the reason i write this, is i found a solution that works for me which i
would like to share with you.

Following goals had been set:
1) Do not clash with existing system tools.
   It is notably that it has even been said on debian-devel, that update-rc.d
   is a API for developers only and not even been considered to be used by
   administrators (search for it).
2) Upgrade of packages shall be handled correctly.
   When a service is disabled, do not reactivate it on package upgrades.

gentoo has a rather nice API for an administrator to handle initscripts s.th. i
always missed in debian. So i modelled this solution somewhat after the gentoo
API.

Here are the unvoidable screenshots:

initial situation:
# find /etc/rc[S0-6].d/ -iname '*cups*'
/etc/rc1.d/K01cups
/etc/rc2.d/S18cups
/etc/rc3.d/S18cups
/etc/rc4.d/S18cups
/etc/rc5.d/S18cups

# rc-update cups show
K:01:1:cups
S:18:2 3 4 5:cups

say we want cups deactivated:
# rc-update cups del

# find /etc/rc[S0-6].d/ -iname '*cups*'
/etc/rc1.d/K01cups

# rc-update cups show
K:01:1:cups

At this stage cups is deactivated and since upgrade-rc.d will respect the
existing last link, it will not touch the links on package upgrades.
The stop link has been deliberately put into /etc/rc1.d/ as this is the single
user runlevel in debian.

Say we want cups reactivated:
# rc-update cups add

# find /etc/rc[S0-6].d/ -iname '*cups*'
/etc/rc1.d/K01cups
/etc/rc2.d/S18cups
/etc/rc3.d/S18cups
/etc/rc4.d/S18cups
/etc/rc5.d/S18cups

# rc-update cups show
K:01:1:cups
S:18:2 3 4 5:cups

The nice thing here is, we reuse the LSB headers that are inside of cups script
and therefore the start links are recreated as they had been before!

If you like it here is it:

/---

_rc-update()
{
local cur prev words cword
_init_completion || return

# don't complete past 2nd token
[[ $cword -gt 2 ]] && return 0

if [[ $cword -eq 1 && $prev == ?(*/)rc-update ]]; then
_services
[[ -e /etc/mandrake-release ]] && _xinetd_services
else
local sysvdirs
_sysvdirs
COMPREPLY=( $( compgen -W 'enable disable remove add del show' --
"$cur" ) )
fi
}
builtin complete -F _rc-update rc-update

rc-update()
{
   case "${2}" in
enable|add)
insserv -d "${1}"
;;

disable|remove|del)
insserv -r "${1}"
insserv -f "${1}",start=,stop=1
;;

show)
insserv -s | \grep -i "${1}"
;;

*)
printf "usage:   rc-update  enable|disable|show\n\n"
printf "enable: Use default runlevels as defined in the scripts.\n"
printf "disable: Remove the listed scripts from all runlevels.\n"
printf "show:Output runlevel and sequence information of service.\n"
;;

esac
}

---/

As you can see these rc-update() is a wrapper around insserv and _rc-update()
provides tab-completion. Details can be read in insserv(8).

Good night!

Thank you! That gives expected results. Additionally i added the same to

IMO well at least that fact that this line is commented and that 'su' is the
only file in /etc/pam.d/ that does so is arguable.

You could try adding a '-v' =verbose switch behind the ssh. It is possible to
add that up to '-vvv' =maximum verbosity.
Then ssh will tell you what it is doing, or not doing. This might help you in
further debugging the issue.

I understand we do have a common understanding of handling such things.
As i do not have to administer a bulk of systems i differ in that i do not have
the need for an advanced configuration system as cfengine.
But apart from that my workflow to handle /etc is similar to yours.
With 'confold' dpkg by default keeps the configuration that is already in place
in production and installs new configurations from DMs as foo.dpkg-dist.
My VCS then notifies me about new or changed files and the i go through them and
merge them as i see fit.

While this works to my experience this leaves traces of the old path
'~/.icedove' in the profile behind.
This should compile a list for you:
$ grep -HiIrn '\.icedove' ~/.thunderbird

But do not blatantly exchange those two strings. It really depends in which
files and in witch context those strings are mentioned.

compare this with yours:

,[  head -n 14 /etc/init.d/nfs-common  ]---

#!/bin/bash

### BEGIN INIT INFO
# Provides:  nfs-common
# Required-Start:$portmap $time
# Required-Stop: $time

# Default-Stop:  0 1 6
# Short-Description: NFS support files common to client and server
# Description: NFS is a popular protocol for file sharing across
#TCP/IP networks. This service provides various
#support functions for NFS mounts.
### END INIT INFO
`---

I suppose the line '# Default-Start:' to be different on your computer.

--  --

> So, the LSB error is absent, but the nfs-kernel-server error still exists..

No clearly there is a LSB header issue. insserv complaints that it the
initscript 'nfs-kernel-server' tells it, that 'nfs-kernel-server' depends on on
the functionality provided by 'nfs-common'. But since 'nfs-common' is disabled
it can't fullfill the requirtment.

well at least the error message from earlier is gone.

> processes initiated by the previous init command) were definitely running..

The idea behind insserv and the LSB headers are to provide a system to declare
dependencies between initscripts. Look at the code snipped above it says
'# Required-Start:'.
This means '/etc/init.d/nfs-common' can only function after the
'$portmap $time' are available. '/etc/init.d/nfs-common' by it self also has
such a '# Provides:' so that other initscript can tell "only start me after
'/etc/init.d/nfs-common' is already running".

So this LSB headers are there to managed initscripts and insserv uses them to
create/resemble the start scripts below '/etc/rc[S0-6].d/' depending on the
actually installed services.

you can use:
insserv -v

to manually call insserv. It will tell you the same error messages as during apt
operation until the initscripts are fixed.

So in the end it is possible that insserv complaints that there are unfulfilled
dependencies, but it is still possible to start those services manually. Which
is what you did.

You can use '/etc/rc.local' for this purpose. It is there for exactly such
things. Just put your command(s) in there but keep the last line 'exit 0' as

I gather we do have different opinions and workflows in this regard which is
absolutely fine.
Maybe i am too worried about this rsync method. Probably due to past
experiences. But it is just too easy to overlook s.th. see below.

> And apparently you do as well because you immediately suggested
> etckeeper which does exactly the same thing of managing files in /etc.

In this regard i do have an other POV then you. I do believe that etckeeper does
not change any file in /etc without manually intervention.
(Obviously files in '/etc/.vcs' are excluded from this rule.)
So i think this is different from the rsync operation you suggested.

Let me tell you why i suggested etckeeper.
Here i use it to commit /etc into $VCS on a regularly basis. This helps me to
keep track of what is going on in /etc.
Being able to compare my modifications with the original is a feature you surely
will not miss anymore, after you get used to it.

I do have to commit that i did not spent time yet to understand that "conffiles"
system deeply.
I do have this snipped in my '/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/99local' though:

/---

// --force-confold:
// do not modify the current configuration file, the new version is installed
// with a .dpkg-dist suffix. With this option alone, even configuration files
// that you have not modified are left untouched. You need to combine it with
// --force-confdef to let dpkg overwrite configuration files that you have not
// modified.

// --force-confdef:
// ask dpkg to decide alone when it can and prompt otherwise. This is the
// default behavior of dpkg and this option is mainly useful in combination
// with --force-confold.

// --force-confmiss:
// ask dpkg to install the configuration file if it’s currently missing (for
// example because you have removed the file by mistake).

Dpkg::Options {
"--force-confdef";
"--force-confold";
"--force-confmiss";
}
---/

+ /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume

..and maybe some more. This is why i would look into the difference prior to
rsyncing. After i had become confident i would use rsync, too.

I believe this not to be a good idea. When you do this you mess around with
config files under the control of dpkg. With all the mess that creates.

I would reinstall everything you had/need again and then diff prior to mass
overwriting the files.

dirdif ()
{
\diff -qrB --exclude='.hg' --exclude='.git' "${1%/}" "${2%/}"
}
[

'/var/lib/apt/extended_states' has the complete package list and knows which
packages are autoinstalled and which have been installed manually.

If you don't mind i attach my own '/etc/cron.daily/etckeeper' (it is only 4k)
which takes care for me to commit those important data into hg.
You can modify it to use your referred vcs instead.

It also compiles a list of installed packages into '/etc/apt/backup/'. Look at
the top of it.

Hope this is useful to you.

limits.conf

2013-04-06 Thread Thilo Six
Hello

i have observed a to my (limited) understanding a strange behavior regarding
limits settings. I would like some hint if i am doing s.th. wrong or if i
encountered a bug.

i have the following:

/etc/security/limits.conf

*   - nproc   512
rootsoft  nproc   1024
roothard  nproc   2048

*   - nofile  8192
root- nofile  16383

limits.conf(5):
NOTE: group and wildcard limits are not applied to the root
  user. To set a limit for the root user, this field must
  contain the literal username root.

With the settings above applied when i log in on a vt as root i get the
follwoing limits for user root:

root on vt:
# ulimit -Hu
2048
# ulimit -Hn
16383
# ulimit -Su
1024
# ulimit -Sn
16383

^- These are excepted results.

Now when i log into kde and start konsole or a xterm and 'su -' i get the
following:

root in kde:
# ulimit -Sn
8192
# ulimit -Hn
8192
# ulimit -Su
512
# ulimit -Hu
512

su(1):
  -, -l, --login
  Provide an environment similar to what the user would
  expect had the user logged in directly.

As you can see in this case the limits defined for a ordinary user are applied
for root. IMO this is a bug as it breaks documented behavior.

Should this be reported or am i missing s.th.?

Boot messages getting cleared

2012-04-15 Thread Thilo Six
Hello

since the upgrade to wheezy i have a problem with the messages that are shown
during boot. Currently during boot messages are shown as usual on vt1 but then
at some point late in the boot process these messages are cleared and then only
the login prompt is shown on vt1 just like on vt2.
I would like to have these messages on vt1 still as privously. It seems i use
the wrong search terms on google as nothing seems to show up. I tried to track
down the files in '/etc/init.d/' also kdms configuration. I have a little
suspicion that consolekit is the culprint but have no clue where and how to
change that. It would be kind if somebody could gave me some pointers in the
right direction.

 Some may disagree (and I've made this point before)
 a standard way to prevent a script from
 executing in Unixlike system is to set the
 permissions.

 chmod a-x /etc/init.d/bluetooth

Recently there has been a dicussion on debinan-devel about this topic.
People here probably are surprised but updated-rc.d isn´t for the admin.
It´s purpose is for the debian-developer only, used in the package scripts.

Currently there just doesn´t exist a proper way to handle services in debian.
Read:
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.debian.devel.bugs.general/764253/focus=159015

...but apprently although developers think update-rc.d isn´t for me i use it
still as it is the only periphery usable solution currently.

the versions are the same. Here it works:

yes. I know the version numbers are lower than in squeeze, so harm is done to
running systems but a lot of bandwith and space on mirrors is wasted.

So back to question one:
Why are there a lot of packages in s-p-u that are clearly meant to be in o-p-u?

Should i ask on debian-release? I couldn't find a list for ftp-master in the
first place when i search earlier today.

That is why it made me wonder. This and given it was just today that a quite
large number of those packages appeared at once.

I've downloaded the Packages.bz2 from {squeeze,lenny}-proposed-updates and
compared those:

$ sed '{/Version/!d ; /lenny/!d}' Packages-squeeze-proposed-updates | wc -l

Now how to find out those 2 packages which are in squeeze-proposed-updates but
not in lenny-proposed-updates?

If i understand you correctly the debian workflow is to upload all
stable-updates to s-p-u and then the SRM moves those to o-p-u afterwards?
If so then i think there is no need to worry for me anymore because previously i
thought those two flavours were separated.

Thanks.

squeeze-proposed-updates contains lenny packages

2011-02-11 Thread Thilo Six
Hello

i am wondering why squeeze-proposed-updates contains lenny packages like e.g.:

$ apt-cache policy linux-headers-2.6.26-2-amd64
linux-headers-2.6.26-2-amd64:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 2.6.26-26lenny2
  Version table:
 2.6.26-26lenny2 0
500 http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ squeeze-proposed-updates/main amd64
Packages

Is this a bug and should be reported or this intentionally?

I did not know the colortheme did change, at least it's not reported in the
changelogs.
But anyway you can change every color inside mc like:
$ man mc | less -p '\[Colors\]'

There is a libata transition coming down the road. But AFAIK that transition
has been only prepared in experimental until now and not been uploaded to
unstable.

   When you request that a package is installed, and as a result
   other packages are installed to satisfy its dependencies, the
   dependencies are marked as being automatically installed.
`-

In the case above all packages are not marked as "auto" which means your apt
thinks all packages are manually installed.
In lenny even apt learned how to remove not needed dependies like aptitude
which is broken with the setup above.

You probably have 'network-manager' installed.
e.g. if you have your connection setup via dhcp in '/etc/network/interfaces'
then the above described will happen (at least here it has).

If you don't rely on the functionality of 'network-manager' you can then just
purge it.

there are 4 key combinations which can be defind:
withcontrolkey
withshiftkey
withaltkey
withnokey

with the 'action' flag you tell it what to do:
0 = scroll per line
1 = scroll half a page
2 = move fore and backward through history
3 = zoom text

now combine those the way you like it.

So 'mousewheel.withshiftkey.action = 1' means 'scroll half a page per
mousewheel when shilft is pressed simultaneously'.

I think that doesn't matter in this regard. You have said your passwd doesn't
behave as mentioned in the manpage, which would be clearly a bug.
I said i can reproduce exactly the behaviour mentioned in manpage and
therefore seeking for an explanation of that divergence which resulted in the
question which version you use.

Which version do you use?

If you have a locked account without that expiry and use either of the above
just 'lock' that account again and then take a look at /etc/shadow.

in kde you can use a shell script like (chmod 700):

I think OP isn't refering to a 'Sea Cork' but to 'see a cork'. ;)

And i think OP want to change the nautilus background tile not the
desktop-background.

Since i haven't git nautilus installed right now, the following is from top
of my head:
open the 'home' window
click the second menu item and far down at the bottem there is 'change
appearens' or similar.
add the new custom background tile and drag 'n drop onto the 'home-window'
background.

<  grep IP /etc/environment

KDE_NO_IPV6=1

basically i do not understand how the machine can still do ipv6 when there is
no kernel modul loaded. ?

Have you got resolvconf or any local dns[proxy|cache] installed?

I just found there is also a list especial for ipv6:

http://lists.debian.org/debian-ipv6/

for nameresolution /etc/hosts is read then /etc/resolv.conf .

I am reading through gmane with Thunderbird and i am pretty sure gmane
doens´t supress the CC(headers). instead i think you need to tell knode to
show them.
But sorry i haven´t any experience with knode so can´t help with that.

i had problem in past.
I solved for me with:

alias mc='HISTFILE=$HOME/.mc/mc_history mc'

That way i do not pollute my bash_history with mc noise, without losing the
mc history feature.
