One very good suggestion I got:

apparently xawtv doesn't like the nvidia drivers. Starting xawtv with
-noxv worked. Think I'll have to take a look at the mythtv code.

Shorewall question

2004-10-06 Thread Tim Timmerman
Hi,

yesterday I tried to activate shorewall as a firewall on a 2.6.8.1
kernel. (using a woody system, and the backport from backports.org)

Everything worked just fine, except for one teensy problem:

  - Nothing on the firewall could send mail to other users on the
firewall.

Needless to say, this breaks things like logcheck (Which is how I
noticed it in the first place)

  Some observations:
  - Rebooted to a 2.4 kernel with ipchains: all mail was handled.

  - telnet 127.0.0.1 25 works, both kernels
  - telnet 127.0.0.1 465 doesn't, both kernels.

I don't believe it is the kernel, but rather something silly in my
  shorewall config ?

  Anybody got any hints ?

  Thanks,
TimT

If you can do without printing via CUPS,
   rm /usr/lib/libgnomeprint/2.4.2/modules/libgnomeprintcups.so,
 else
 - wait for the cupsys transition to happen in sarge (see
   http://bjorn.haxx.se/debian/testing.pl?package=gnumeric) or
 - install libcupsys2-gnutls10 and libgnomeprint2.2-0 from sid.
Tried the last solution. This brought in a ton of other stuff, but
  it did fix the problem.

 Thanks,
TimT.

Gnumeric broken in sarge ?

2004-06-20 Thread Tim Timmerman
Hi,

I did my usual apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade last saturday,
and discovered that gnumeric wouldn't run anymore. The only message
  printed is:

  Cannot allocate memory.

This is mildly annoying, since I kep some essential dat ain a
gnumeric spreadsheet. ( I do keep a woody install around, so all is
  not lost ;-)

(By the way: bugbuddy sees to be broken too: just hangs trying to
  collect data .)

I've tried rebuilding the package from scratch, and reinstalling it,
but that didn't make any difference.

  Anyone have any suggestions ?

Re: smart media card reader problem

2004-01-12 Thread Tim Timmerman
Richard == Richard Lyons [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

No, you're right: it must be the kernel drivers. I've now discovered it
is worse than you described. I have no complicated filesystems on any
of the media, but after mounting any one of them it is necessary to
reboot before you can mount any other type. This applies also to smart
media and to SD cards - not just to the disgo. Now that is tedious...
Worse.. don't know. What happens is that when you unplug a usb
storage device and plug in a different one, it gets assigned a
different drive letter. What used to be /dev/sda is now
/dev/sdb. The reboot resets the counter.

In your case then, after plugging in the second device, try
  /dev/sdbsomething in your mount command.

Funnily enough, I think there is a reasonable explanation for
this.. just can't remember it at the moment.
 Hey ho.
  Indeed.

Re: Switching from Mutt to Evoultion

2003-06-17 Thread Tim Timmerman
Brad == Brad Cramer [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

Brad I am switching from Mutt to Evolution (because I am using Outlook at

Brad sure how to set some things up. I have a mail server running on my home
Brad network which handles fetching my mail and also sending. I then have my
Brad box that I am running Evolution on that runs fetchmail as a daemon to
Brad collect mail from home mail server. Before I used procmail and mutt sort
Brad mail ( I subscribe to several mailing lists and really like the way that
Brad setup worked from within Mutt) But I am not really sure how to set up
Brad something similar in Evolution, so I get my personal mail from work and
Brad home into my Inbox and mailing lists mail sorted and put into the
Brad various folders.
Brad Would someone like to provide me with some pointers and sites that can
Brad help me with this transition.
   Brad,

I recently (within the last week) made the same switch, not
because I had to use outlook, but because I needed to add
imap to the network, for our new road-warriors.

 Anyway: the curent setup:
 - Mail is still filtered (to files in ~/mail or ~/nsmail,
depending on user pref) by procmail

 - I created an imap account in evolution.
Using this account, I subscribed to a number of folders,
the files in which the mail is filtered.

That's all there was to it, as far as I remember.

One minor problem: with the 'send/receive' option, all of my
mail arrives in a seperate folder. (Evolution 1.0.5) There is
a pop box on a remote server involved that I'd like to be
filtered to a seperate folder. Haven't yet figured out a way
to do this, but I think that's where evolutions own folders
come in.. (Or I could kludge up something using fetchmail..)

TimT. (Apologies for the appended disclaimer. I have no
control over it.)

Brad Thanks
Brad Brad

Sendmail problem on woody ?

2003-03-13 Thread Tim Timmerman
Hi,

I'm kind of stuck on this one, hoping somebody can help me out..

I host a small family mailing list on one of my debian-woody
machines, using majordomo. This is a very low traffic list (often
weeks go by without any messages.)

This week, traffic on the list was up, but I received a complaint
from one of the list members, whose email address is on aol.com,
that the mail did not get through.

Mail sent directly to the aol.com address doesn't arrive either,
mail sent from an alternate address does arrive.

When I examine the logs, the email is shown as Status= Sent, and
   everything seems to be OK.

A possibly related problem is that, for some reason, I seem to be
unable to send email to addresses on msn.com.

What happens here is that the connection is made, but nothing
happens and the host is disconnected after four hours.

The only thing I can think of at this point is that I applied the
sendmail security update two weeks ago.

   The questions:
   - Does anybody else have the same problem ?
   - Does anybody have any suggestions for fixing this ?
   - Failing that, I'd like to move back to the original
(pre-security) patch of sendmail.. I do have the woody
CD-roms.. Is there any way to force the install of the old
package, with the same config as the current ?

And if there is anyone with an aol.com account, that I could
bounce some mail off over the weekend, that would be helpful
too.. Just want to check that the error is not on the aol-user
end. (Usually a very clueful person, by the way...)

   Thanks in advance,
  TimT

Hi,

angus Can anyone shed any light on the following problem? TIA
angus Why is my printer chewing off first lines of paragraphs?

angus I'm running a deskjet portable printer using debian 2.0,

Unfortunately, no, I can't.. but I've got related problems, so
I thought I'd hitch a ride on this thread.

I'm using debian 2.0, lprng, magicfilter, a deskjet portable
printer and I too tried both deskjet-filter and dj500-filter.

My problem: the printer stops part of the way through a post
script file. I've tried new, freshly generated files (dvips),
old files, and the example files that come with ghostscript.

Everything used to work fine when I used slackware.

Things I've changed since the last successful print:
   1. Moved from Slackware(+apsfilter) to Debian (+magicfilter)
   2. Upgraded my processor to a Cyrix P166+ (from AMD K5/100)
   3. Reflashed my Bios (not sure about the new version number:
MoBo is a BCM SQ591, non-mmx, about three years old: I
flashed it with the latest bios on the BCM site.)

   Anybody have any suggestions ?
