slapd stopped working...
I'm running sid; there was a couple of recent updates to slapd, from 2.4.21-1 to 2.4.23-1 (and then 2.4.23-2) The config itself wasn't changed; the backup file made is the same as the current one. However, slapd doesn't start anymore. All I have to go on is the following: (/var/log/auth.log): Jul 16 12:26:53 pilot slapd[7441]: auxpropfunc error invalid parameter supplied Jul 16 12:26:53 pilot slapd[7441]: _sasl_plugin_load failed on sasl_auxprop_plug_init for plugin: ldapdb and the following from syslog: syslog.0:Jul 15 23:04:29 pilot slapd[3050]: @(#) $OpenLDAP: slapd 2.4.23 (Jul 15 2010 19:20:59) $ ^ir...@monster:/tmp/buildd/openldap-2.4.23/debian/build/servers/slapd From what I've looked at for the auth.log, that error isn't a fatal one; slapd isn't/can't use the plugin anyway. But it is disconcerting to have slapd stop working entirely, with zero config changes on my part. -- Troy Telford ttelford.gro...@gmail.com -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". System Mail
I just changed the hostname on one of my servers; using the typical ways - changed /etc/hostname, and the hostname command. I've also updated /etc/hosts. (And I needed to change the power plug, so the system was also rebooted.) However, after I changed the hostname, I don't seem to be able to get any system mail - (ie. the mdadm daemon sends root an email to announce that the raid array is in a degraded state, etc). Another (trivial) issue is linuxlogo - even after apt-get purging and re-installing linuxlogo, it still has the old hostname. Is there something I need to put into debconf to get it to recognize that the system's hostname has changed? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Kernel Panic (OT)
I'm having some problems with my computer, which I believe are hardware-related. The main indicator is either a kernel panic, or a BSOD (Win32). My computer was working fine until I moved home (from college). It even worked fine the first 3 days while at home. In both cases, it appears to be a one of two problems: Linux reports it as a problem with kernel paging (sometimes deferencing a null pointer, h) Or, it panics that an interrupt problem is the cause. (For months now, I've seen the occasional "Spurious 8259 interrupt: IRQ7" message, but paid it no mind as it never gave me a problem. Windows gives similar errors (paging error, or IRQ_NOT_lesS_OR_EQUAL) My MB is an ASUS A7M266 (DDR Memory, AMD chipset) What I've done: 1.) Pulled out everything but the video card. 2.) Tried every combination possible using the memory I have in my system. (Using only one DIMM, in slot 1, slot 2, swap DIMMS, do it again, have both dimms in, changing order.) 3.) Changed the Video card, repeated (2). There was no noticible difference in the behavior of any combination of steps 1-3. Detatch and re-attatch shell/process?
Is there a way in Linux (or UNIX and its cousins in general) to run a process (like a long, gnarled process that can take several hours/days), and detatch it from a shell such that it runs in the background (with stdin/out going to a file)? And to be somewhat more specific - how do you do it so you can re-attatch to the process later? Specifics: I would like to be able to: * Start a HDL synthesis running in the background of a computer. * Log out of the computer entirely, leaving that process (and subprocesses) running. * Log back in later (hours, days) and either re-enter the program just as I left it, or view all the log files. This is a problem for many of us working at my university's Sunlab (We call it such because they have Sun workstations). Those of us who have to run these HDL synthesis processes (although there are other simulation apps that need this ability as well) would like to be able to start our process, logout, and leave. This way, the actual workstation is still accessible to anybody else who needs it, will be able to use it. Sure, programs may run a bit (OK, a *lot*) slower - but that is a vast improvement over a lab full of 'locked' machines; espescially since not everybody even needs to use the machines for CPU/memory-intensive operations. I'm thinking this may be possible (somewhat) using 'nohup' But is there anything else that allows this? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Wrong fonts in Motif
For some reason, I get the wrong (read: boxes) fonts on the motif widgets on some programs. Specifically: Netscape 4.x: The browser text is fine, but the button widgets (back, fwd, config, etc) are all boxes rather than characters. Acrobat Reader: The navigation wodgets at the bottom are fine, but the dialogs (print, save, etc.) have all boxes rather than characters. To my knowledge, I have /all/ of the xfont- packages that are in Debian (sid) installed, and this problem appears when using both lesstif and OpenMotif. Any ideas? IDE-SCSI, CD-RW, ZIP drive weirdness
I have an ATAPI CD-RW installed as the second slave (/dev/hdd). According to the documentation I've read, to use the CD-RW in Linux, I have to use IDE-SCSI (kernel) and have 'hdd=scsi' in the boot parameters. I've done this, and I have no problems using the drive, but I have discovered somthing... odd. I have an ATAPI ZIP-100 on /dev/hdb (first slave). I am not telling the kernel to use IDE-SCSI for it (boot parameters), yet IDE-SCSI takes control of the ZIP-100. And, the ZIP-100 works great under the IDE-SCSI driver. (Since I run DevFS, it's interesting to note that this gets rid of any problems I've had and read about when using the ZIP-100 and DevFs). My only beef is that I don't believe I configured Linux to do this (although it was a pleasent surprise), and am wondering if this is a bug of some kind to be reported. (Or, if this is a little unknown workaround for ZIP drives & DevFS). -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
CD/DVD mounting:
OK, I actually have 2 questions: 1.) When I mount a DVD in my DVD-ROM, it claims that it's ISO9660, rather than UDF (this is with multipe DVD-ROM drives). The only difference I've seen (cursory glance) was UDF has all uppercase filenames. Is this really a problem? Anyway to correct this behavior? (ie. have the drive try UDF first) 2.) Is there a way to detect the disc format in the drive (DVD/UDF vs. ISO9660/CD) and change the mount point accordingly? Mozilla, Defoma, AA Fonts
I have no problem installing/configuring Mozilla when I simply install a nightly snapshot, and modify the $mozilla/defaults/prefs/unix.js file. However, I decided to move away from the nightly builds, and switch to the Debian packaged versions (Debian 3.0/Sid). Mozilla runs its font-detection dealy the first time it runs, (as it always did when I installed from nightly sources). However, it's missing nearly all the fonts I have installed on my system. (Including ones I have previously used in Mozilla.) My /usr/lib/mozilla/defaults/prefs/unix.js does point to the font directories properly; however it is only detecting the fonts in /var/lib/defoma, and /usr/share/fonts/truetype/openoffice. Neither of these font paths are in the unix.js file. My wild guess is that, since it's looking in /var/lib/defoma, defoma is somehow involved... But, what do I need to do to get Mozilla configured right (when using the Debian packages)? -Troy -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? XMMS Effect Plugin Installation... (.deb specific)
The problem is simple enough; one I've traditionally solved by compiling XMMS from source & then installing. But I want to find the reason why I can't solve it when I install XMMS from the Debian package(s). I have the QSound plugin for XMMS, named libiq_xmms.so. Normally, it's installed in $XMMS/Plugins/Effect/. The Debian installation uses /usr/lib/xmms/Effect for the path to the effect plugins, and is where the effect plugins included in the Debian package are located. I copied the QSound plugin to /usr/lib/xmms/Effect, set the permissions to a+rx, ran XMMS, and went to the preferences to configure it. The QSound plugin was not available; only the three other plugins installed to /usr/lib/xmms/Effect. I've also tried copying the plugin to $HOME/.xmms/Plugins/Effect, but had no success there, either. I know I can easily solve this by compiling XMMS from source & installing, then copying the plugin to the newly compiled XMMS' plugn/Effect directory. I would prefer to stick to using Debian packages wherever possible, as it's a bit easier to maintain a 'clean' computer this way. Thanks for any help you have... -Troy
Refresh dselect db?
I hope this will be simple... I recently re-installed Debian. After revising my apt.sources list, as well as a good 'ol dist-upgrade to bring my system up to Debian 3.0/unstable, I discovered an interesting problem: For some reason, while apt-get has no problem with the change, 'dselect' still thinks it's running Potato. It shows the current versions of the software I have installed, however it still diplays/uses the package-list from Potato. This isn't much of a problem for the most part, because I just use apt-get for package installation/maintenance. But, when I'm looking for a package to install, I can't go to dselect and look up the proper package name for apt-get. (This being because it has the old Potato package list, and not the unstable package list). So, as an alternative, I have to go to the Debian site, and use its query for the package name(s). Which is a bit of a bandwidth & resource hog considering the information should be on my computer already... So, for instance, if I want to install GNOME, I look up 'gnome' within dselect. However, only GNOME 1.0 is shown -- which is definately not the version that is shown when I look it up on the Debian site. So, how do I re-initialize dselect's package database so it shows the 'unstable' branch packages, rather than the 'potato' branch ones. (I have already updated the apt sources list, as well as 'apt-get dist-upgrade', so my distribution is the unstable one, and everything but dselect seems to be fine.) -Troy
eth0 detected by kernel, ifconfig, ifup/ifdown can't configure it. lo (localhost) also has same problem.
I apologize if this is in HTML; Outlook express is all I have @ the moment. I've been working on this for a few hours now... I need some help! I can get neither eth0 nor my localhost (lo) interfaces to work! They were working fine earlier.I made a simple change to my filesystem - I needed a bigger /var partition, and therefore made the proper preparations (backups, etc), created the new partition, copied all data over, fixed the fstab, etc. But now my network card isn't configuring, and neither is localhost.Specifically - during boot, I get the usual message about the kernel detecting my RealTek 8029 card on IRQ 10, IO 0xb400, and that it sets it to eth0.When /etc/init.d/networking runs to configure the card (and lo), I get the following errors (paraphrased)SIOCFADDR: bad file descriptoreth0: interface not found: bad file descriptor.lo: interface not found: bad file descriptor. And, networking does not function. I don't even have Localhost!, so it can't be the network card itself. In fact - I have a 'zip rescue' disk that contains a default debian-base installation (v.2.2). It uses the exact same kernel file as my 'regular' boot - kernel 2.4.1, located on my /boot partition. The zip rescue disk is able to boot and configure networking just fine, everything works. The hard disk cannot. The only difference in booting is that the 'zip_rescue' entry in LILO uses the zip disk as the root, whereas the 'linux' entry uses my hard disk. The kernel is not on either partition. /proc information: When booting from hard disk: /proc/interrupts does not list the ethernet card, nor its IRQ. /proc/ioports (i think) lists the ethernet card on 0xb400. When booting from the zip disk, /proc/interrupts lists the ethernet card correctly on IRQ 10. /proc/ioports lists the card on 0xb400. Realtek's diagnostics show the card as working properly, and it works in Windows as well as on the zip rescue. So what is it that changed to make my networking stop working when booting from the hard disk, while networking works fine when booted from the zip?Any ideas?!? I really don't want to have to 'nuke' it all and re-install from scratch. I don't have that kind of time...Thanks,Troy
Packages I Don't want to upgrade
OK, this should be simple... There are a number of packages (XF86 3.3.6) that are 'installed' in my system - but are not really installed. In fact, they are only in the dpkg database. I did a manual install of XF86 4.0.1 from tarballs quite a while ago. However, I have no desire to 'upgrade' the XF83 3.3.6 debs, since they overwrite the tarball installation. I'm sure there is a way in Debian to flag certain packages to not upgrade, and I would appreciate any instructions on this. Also - I know there is a XF4 deb packaging project, and it's rather... alpha. Is there at least a meta-package that will meet all the XF86 dependancies, and not be overwritten by XF86 3 debs? (Meaning, it meets the deps for it, but it'll let me use the existing tarball installation from XF86.org?) Thanks, Troy Telford -- Brain: Pinky, are you pondering what I am pondering? Re: Potato vs Realtek8029PCI NIC
Actually, I have no problems with a realtek 8029 card; however, I always re-compile the kernel after I get the thing on; that usually gets rid of the unresolved symbols problem... In fact, with all the kernel module(s) I've used, re-compiling the kernel from scratch (including the modules) typically removes all unresolved symbols problems. So, you might want to try that... As for myself, I typically compile in ne2k-pci into the kernel, rather than as a module; but I must admit I've never had any trouble with it as a module, either. Hope I can be helpful... as I have been using a RealTek 8029-based PCI network card for around 2 years now, with all kinds of kernel versons (yours included, no doubt), I'll be glad to help in any way I can... X Problems...
OK, I've been having an... interesting problem... I'm using XF86 4.0.1, and have had no problems with it at all until about two days ago... Here's the list of the symptoms: In GNOME - desktop objects (Namely Icons) have a grey background - rather than showing the desktop bitmap underneath as it should. Quake III Arena: The video mode is not changing upon game launch - but rather running in a windowed mode. I can manually change the vidmode (CTRL+ALT+-, etc), however since I can't move the Q3A window, that doesn't help too much. And - anything that should be transparent (Window Manager borders, Icon backgrounds (as in GNOME), etc. is not transparent - but rather a flat grey box around it... I have an nVidia TNT-based board, and I have the beta nVidia 094 drivers installed (properly, I might add). - removing the driver and changing to the XF86 driver (rather than nVidia's) made no difference. There is only one change that I made to the system in the time that it stopped working... I installed the OpenMotif Deb's. Removing them didn't do anything to alleviate the problem, either. Console problems...
OK, here's my problem: I'm currently running the Woody release, and have managed to cause a rather interesting problem: Although my syslogd and klogd daemons are running at startup, the system logs themselves are not being written - in fact, the log messages are displayed to the text console... for instance, when I log into a regular text-console (non-X), I am greeted with a PAM module message, as well as a login record - the exact same as I find in my /var/log/syslog.0 file. And, the date stamp on my /var/log/syslog.0 file has been unchanged since April 9th - dispite multiple reboots (I use Windoze for games...) Another interesting side-not is that Xscreensaver (and the KDE screensavers) will 'save' the screen - but when I choose 'lock screen' - they both just save the screen and do not lock the screen... While a somewhat minor problem as far as functionality goes, this is a rather troublesome security issue, as well as simply annoying due to the fact that my system isn't working correctly... Now, this is what I did (I think) that caused the problem - I tried to install the KDE-Corel packages (From the Corel web-site). Now, there were some conflicts in dpkg that kept them from installing it... and, I just moved back to the packages available from the KDE site... I thought everything was OK until I saw the logging behavior. I'll supply any more additional information upon request... Thanks! Troy Telford
