automatically get the server up
Hi! I'd like to ask why my Debian server, on a power-down or black-out, always requests for root to do an fsck etc. Is there any way I can automatically get the server up and running again? Is this a good solution? Or is it better off having root to do a manual fsck etc first? Thanks! Umum Wijoyo --- G6/Lola Bandung, Indonesia

question about Maildir and Webmail
Hi! I'd like to ask how to set up a Maildir format for my users. Is /var/spool/mail/$USER an mbox format or a Maildir format? I think it's an mbox, right? So how do I convert it into a Maildir format? What are the benefits? My next question, how do I set up a Webmail facility for my users? Is there a Debian package for it? Is it the imp package? Thanks a lot. Umum Wijoyo
Debian 2.2r2 CD images
Hi! Have the Debian 2.2r2 CD images been released anywhere yet? I'd like to make some; I've been looking and only found 2.2r0 images. OK! TIA. Umum Wijoyo
permission problems
Hi! After I do an upgrade, I always experience users being able to do a wall (quite annoying!), and other programs there not supposed to. Why is this? How come the permissions get screwed up? How can I handle/prevent this? Should I check every program/binary and do a chmod accordingly? TIA Umum Wijoyo
burning CDs
Hi! Can anyone help me to burn some Debian 22 CDs? I'm using the Golden Hawk Technology software. Any reference would be helpful. TIA Umum Wijoyo -- Bandung, Indonesia
Re: burning CDs
If you are not careful Goldenhawk software by default uses RAW files not ISO files. You need to make a cue file that gives the right cluster size something like:- O-oh! But then, I just burned my CD: I think it's fine... though I haven't tried it out for a real install yet... Anyway... I see we still need some floppies to do an install? Is it possible that we install directly from the CD (e.g. bootable CD or something like that)? Wouldn't that be much better? Less fuss for Debian newbies? OK! Thanks... Debian 2.2 CDs
Hi! Would like to ask how I can make a copy of Debian 2.2 CDs? Can I just download the iso files from a Debian ftp server, and burn them to a CD? Would I need the boot floppies, or will the CDs be bootable? Are there any manuals on these stupid questions of mine...??? ;-p TIA Umum Wijoyo
web-based mail
Hi! I'd like to provide a web-based mail service for my users. Are there any Debian packages for that? What abt its security (I mean, when a user enters his/her password)? OK! TIA Umum Wijoyo -- Bandung, Indonesia
quota error
Hi! I'd just like to ask: How come any of my users with a uid of 1024 (uid=1024), always experiences quota problems? Is there anything magical about the number 1024? (I know that 1 kb = 1024 bytes...) Or did I just set my system's quota incorrectly? OK! TIA... Umum Wijoyo -- Bandung, Indonesia
scrambled chars on tty
Hi... I'd just like to ask: Why do several of my tty-s display scrambled characters? I can't login using them; if I do, I also get a scrambled shell prompt. What's happening? OK! Thanks. Regards, Umum Wijoyo

kernel-2.2.16
Hi, I read in the Debian Security section, there's a serious bug in the Linux kernel, and we are advised to do an upgrade. So where can I find the kernel-2.2.16 source? This version is OK, I presume? OK! Thanks! Umum Wijoyo -- Bandung, Indonesia
question on w
Hello... If anybody could help me: I've noticed that the w program on Potato/Frozen is a bit different from the one when I was still using Slink/Stable. What I mean is, the WHAT colom: it sometimes just displays a -, and not what the user is actually doing. How is this? I know there are a lot of other ways which I can use instead of w, but then w is the easiest way to get a snapshot of what my users are doing (are up to :-p) OK! Thanks in advance! Urip
Telnet security
The previous discussion on Telnet security interested me. I would thus like to ask: How do you tell that ssh is running during your Telnet/Rlogin connection? How do you set-up ssh to work? I'm afraid I've been thinking that ssh was already working on my Linux box, but actually it wasn't...??? :-p OK! Thanks! Urip H.
wall permission
Can anybody help me here? I don't know why, but my wall program permission seems to get violated each time by normal users. It always changes to root: tty ownership. ??? Urip Hudiono --- Bandung, Indonesia
program permissions
Hello... Is there a ghost in my machine? Some of my programs somehow seem to get there permissions changed (programs in /usr/sbin, /usr/bin). How is this? Has someone cracked into my system without me knowing? If anybody could help me out? Thanks! Urip Hudiono -- Bandung, Indonesia
X color depth
Hello... How can I set my X color depth to be more than 8 bpp (say... like 16 or 24)? Does this have anything to do with my video card config? (I think I've set up my S3 Savage 3D card correctly...) When we were still using RedHat 6.2, we had no problem: our X display was fascinating! It even looked better than Windows (shudder)! ;-p OK! Thanks! Urip Hudiono -- Bandung, Indonesia PS: Thanks for all the how to close ports answer... Geez... I'm always asking questions here... I promise I'll upgrade from newbie as soon as possible... :-p

security hole in PAM?
Hello again... I've noticed that Debian frozen/potato has already used the PAM security scheme... I also heard somewhere that PAM has a security hole? Using a so-called slam.sh script, some Red Hat distros have become vulnerable... Is this also a problem with the Debian distro? Should I, or should I not remove PAM? (Some security scheme... if it only turns out that it itself is a weak spot) Thanks! Urip Hudiono -- Bandung, Indonesia PS: Thanks for all ur suggestions on my previous questions. Will try them out!
how to close ports
Hello... I used nmap to check what ports were open on my box; I found some questionable open ports... such as 2 unknown ports, 1 listen port, ...and what actually is the sunrpc port for? Should I, and how can I, close these ports? (Or am I being a bit too paranoid?) Thanks! Urip Hudiono -- Bandung, Indonesia PS: Thanks for the replies for my write source code question. I now have a Bahasa Indonesia version of write... :-p
