... the docs you will need for x are in /usr/doc/x11...

I was not able to find the exact docs you were talking about, but I
 did
find the program that creates XF86Config and X11 seems to work
somewhat... Boy that script asked me some questions I had to dig
 pretty
 deep to figure out!

[Vladislav Papayan x285]
When I configured my no-name S3Virge card I used XF86Setup
program that is
now standard for XFree86. This is a graphical application that
starts up
assuming that you have a video card that is a lowest common
denominator
for all the video cards -- then lets you pick you video an
monitor -- then
it generates /etc/X11/XF86Setup file on exit.

... I like fvwm95 to be the manager of choice...

I downloaded and installed fvwm95 and installed it using dserver. It
did not change the appearance of the window manager very much. I did
find a INSTALL readme file that talked about copying files to a source
directory and compiling them... Is this required, or was that
 something
left over from a generic unix/linux install distribution? Can you
 point
me in the direction of where I need to look to get the fvwm95 working?

What WM is the easiest to install / configure?

[Vladislav Papayan x285]
KDM (in my opinion)
However, what made me use fvwm2 is the fact that I like a
program
called XFCE that works great with fvwm2 -- this is basically
like
a tool bar that alows you to create buttons for you favorit
applications
without modifying any configuration files -- just a very user
friendly
way to use X11 system. By the way, to install XFCE -- I
downloaded
the rpm file (for glibc -- because I use the latest glibc) then
used alien package to convert it to debian package and than just
installed it with dpkg -i .

My X11 wm currently creates an xterm when it starts. Once placed on
 the
screen, it does not let me resize or move it. Is this normal?
[Vladislav Papayan x285] I
I think this is a default for most of the fvwm configuration
file
What is the proper way to shutdown the X11 system when I want to work
 on
my system from the console? I have been changing the init level to
 1
to get out of X11, but there must be a better way then this!
[Vladislav Papayan x285]
Most of the time I do not shutdown X11 when I want to work on
from
console. I just do CTRL+F1 or CTRL+F2 or CTR+F.. (just not F7)
to switch to console mode (I just learned 3 month ago -- and it
is better
then shutting down X11 every time). Changing init level to 1 I
think does
more than you want because it is probably (I am guessing here)
switches
you to single user mode.

 Thanks!

 Doug

[Q] Mesa + gcc 2.8.1 +libc6 (Linux)

1998-03-18 Thread Vladislav Papayan x285
Hello,
I compiled Mesa with gcc 2.8.1 + the latest libc6 (that includes
pthreads 0.7)
on Linux.

I tried make linux-386-pthreads,
make linux-386-elf,
make linux-elf

All the sample programs core dump. The debugger cannot step through the
core file.
I also tried putting a printf right the main declaration -- does not
even go there.
I also tried one by one eliminate the compile switches (all of them,
including the
ones that have to do with optimization) -- did not make a difference.
When building linux-386-pthread combination I had to remove -ansi
-pedantic flags
otherwize the compiler complained -- but that should have influenced
anything.

My other programs compile and work fine (they do not use threads, but
use
the adopted version of STL and linked to libstdc++)

I also notice that even if I do not specify to compile threaded version
of Mesa,
ldd reports that I am linking to libpthread.so -- which my programms do
not show.

And one more thing: linux-386-pthread option of Mesa makefiles does not
build
the shared version of Mesa and Glut libs -- is there a limitation?

Was anyone able to get this combination of compiler lib and Mesa (2.6)
to work
on Linux (debian - hamm) ?

Thanks in advance for any help,
Vladislav

[Q] XDM -- how to reconfigure

1998-03-12 Thread Vladislav Papayan x285
Hello,
When installing debian I was suggested by the installation program to
use XDM to start X windows.
I now understand that I do not want that. However I can only use startx
command (what I was using
before the new installation) if logged in as root. I would like to use
startx command to start
xwindows for regular users. Is there a way to reconfigure xwindows or
xdm to ask me that
question about whether I want to use xdm again so I can answer 'No'.

Another question is: I would like to know whether it is possible to
switch back and forth between Xwindows and a full screen terminal (sort
of like in
NT where I can have a full screen command promt and switch from and to
it).

Thanks in advance,

Also where can I buy (inexpensively) a version of Motif 2.1

version of the gnu compiler 2.8.0 (or egcc) will become

Sorry if the question has been asked again
But I cannot get XEmacs to start up (in X windows or

I did look through the mailing list arch in January but did not
find a clear answer on this question.

The XEmacs is from hamm but compiled for libc5
Most of my system is libc6 -- but I have some packages
that rely on libc5 and work OK.

I would suggest BusLogic --- not only they are good
but also they 'officially' support linux providing the drivers.
Adaptec on the other hand refused (as far as I know) to recognize

.xinitrc is used for startx, and .xsession is used for xdm logins.
I symlink them together here for convenience.

I believe that the .xsession script must also be executable. The first
line in the script should be #! /bin/sh, then do chmod +x .xsession

(or do this to .xinitrc if you use the symlink method)

{Q} Several Questions on X

1998-01-12 Thread Vladislav Papayan x285
Hello,
I have debian-hamm as of Dec. 19, (everything is libc6) installed.
I cannot seem to get X to work when I am not root.
It tells me that only root can run the server.
I thought that there might be something wrong with permissions, so
I reinstalled x-server-s3v. It installed OK with one error saying
something
about MAKEDEV cannot do something. I still can run X as root but
not as a regular user.

I changed /etc/X11/config to allow anybody to login, and I tried
'console' -- still did not help.
What could I be doing wrong?

Another Question I have is how to make a background image (JPG or BMP)
to appear
when I start my X session.

BTW, I did try to comment out and enable back the option that starts xdm
on start -- it did not
help. Actually I am not sure I understand what xdm does -- when I boot
by box I still get the
regular text only prompt -- is it how it should work? I also start my X
sessions by typing
'startx' -- is that a correct way of starting X (as a user or as a
root)?

Thanks in advance,
Vladislav

[Q] How to install everything libc6

Hello,
On December 19 I downloaded (to a CD) everything in Hamm/binary-i386
And created the floppy disks later on (from the same place).
When I installed the base installation it put binaries compiled
with libc5. When I was prompted with DSELECT screen I select an option
to update the existing packages with the versions available on CD.
DSelect gave me a buch of errors (regarding libc6 that it conflicts with
libc5).
I then went to a command prompt and did 'dpkg -i --force-conflicts
libc6XXX.deb'
That worked but then when I went to DSELECT and tried to isntall other
packages --
I got a bunch of problems with libdb1, and so on.

Is there a simple way to make a fresh installation of Debian
where everything (what is available) is libc6.

[Q] Cannot Print to Samba printer

1997-10-28 Thread Vladislav Papayan x285
Hi
I am giving up. I cannot print to my Samba printer (attached to Linux)
and I was able to do it before. I do not remember what I have done
first upgraded to glibc or recompiled samba 10 times.

It is not my windows client problem -- because when I use
smbclient '\\myhost\printer_name' -P on the same machine --
it still does not work. It says share name is not found.
when I do smbclient -L myhost -- I see all the shares including
the printers (by now I created to services that point to the same
printer). I read Samba's hints.txt diagnosis.txt and FAQs --
I can print from my Linux box using lpr command (I use LPRing package)
-- everything is OK with printing (no problems with users not being able
to write to a spool directory, etc.).

Just remembered I also installed 2.1.59 kernel (before I was using
2.1.56) -- but I do not think it matters.

I attach to this message my smb.conf
and output from testparm.

If anyone can help -- I would really appreciate that

RE: [Q] Cyrix 6x86L [SOLVED]

1997-10-27 Thread Vladislav Papayan x285
Hi,
I found that Cyrix was NOT the cause of my problem.
I have bad memory chips. As soon as I switched the
memory everything is working fine. By the way, I think
with help of set86 utility and a good fan -- that processor
runs even cooler than a 100MHz Intel (IHMO).
As far as clocking -- I have Cyrix 150 -- my motheboard
supports 66, 75, 83 MHz bus speed -- so I choose
75Mhz for the MB speed and 2x for the chip speed --
it all works out OK.

As I side note -- I put the bad memory into Intel P100 machine
running NT -- after a couple of hours of working it crashed the
machine in a way that I have reinstall the whole OS (one
startup dll is missing or corrupt).

Is there a program for Linux (or DOS) that will detect bad memory?

Regards,
Vladislav

Whoops, thanks. I meant to hit reply all.

[Q] Cyrix 6x86L

1997-10-24 Thread Vladislav Papayan x285
Hi
I just upgraded to the latest unstable (libc6) stuff.
Including October 18 version of gcc -- now
every time I try to compile anything I get sig 11
and interneal compiler error.
Also tar -zxpvf on many files that I have returns
an error that CRC check failed (it worked ok on those packages
before). Downgrading tar to the previous (non-libc6) version
still has the same problem.

Now, I also changed my 486DX4-100 to Cyrix P200+ 6x86L
(my kernel was built for x386) -- can it be the cause
of all my problems?

Thanks, in advance

Probably the same cause too.

Do you want to bet on it?

I don't know very much about Cyrix cpu's and their compatibility
issues,
did you get a new motherboard as well or did you just swap the cpu's
and
changed timings on the motherboard? Try to experiment with setting them
to
very conservative settings and see if that solves your problem. If not,
consider getting a good motherboard.

Yes. I have a new motherboard as well. It has voltage autodetect,
83MHz capable bus (I am running 75mhz bus). It is TX chipset.
The memory is also new (60ns EDO). I also found a utility that
seems to tune Cyrix processors. It is called set6x86 -- it looks
very promising as it can tell the processor to go into a special
low consumption mode when it is on HALT instruction (which is 90% of the

[Q] Several questions

1997-10-13 Thread Vladislav Papayan x285
Hello,
as of this Sunday I downloaded and updated almost of my
packages that now compiled with gnulibc6 (with exception
of X11 stuff).

I ran into a couple of problems and am not sure if I caused them.

1. After installing ldso, libc6, I installed libreadline2 -- that
some how deleted a link to my old readline that bash was dependent
on - so after I logged off I could not login into the system from
anywhere -- bash was not executing. Then I tried to go into
the system with the Debian installation diskettes (I have a version
that is based on kernel v 2.0.6) -- to see if the old libreadline
was saved somewhere but it was not. I mounted my hd with
/usr/bin partition to see if I can run dpkg and install the latest
version of bash -- but dpkg did not run at all (this is what I do not
really understand: while in /target/usr/bin tried ./dpkg and
nothing happened).
Before all that I tried to do the upgrade using dselect but the
update program exited with status 1 when installing libreadline --
this is why I started installing the lib myself.

I fixed the problem by doing two things:

a. substituted bash with ash (shell that comes on the installation disk)
-- this allowed my system to boot up to the point that hd
are mounted (all the init scripts use bash as a default shell)

b. changed my passwd file to allow root to login with cshell instead
of bash shell -- that allowed me get into the system and upgrade bash.

I just would like to know if next time I decide to do anything like
that -- what would be the preferred sequence of actions.

2. After installing new bash -- I tried to compile my programs
nothing worked. The problem was that my make files relied on
determining operating system type by looking at OSTYPE env variable.
That variable was always defined as 'linux' now OSTYPE=gnu-linux.
I just wanted to know if this is now a standard and will be the
same for all the other linux distribution -- or should I use something
more stable to determine the OS type from makefiles.

3. gcc crashes consistently when compiling YACL (one of the C++
libraries I use) I get SIG 11 type of error. Compiling kernel though
seems to be OK -- that is why I thing that there is something
wrong with a C++ portion of it.

I did install all the latest dev versions of glibc and g++ and the
latest CPP (I am not sure though if it has been updated for the
latest gcc)

Is there anything else I should install?

Thanks in advance,
Vladislav

RE: [Q][Thanks] How to Print in DEBIAN

1997-09-23 Thread Vladislav Papayan x285
Hi,
I'd like to thank all for the valuable input.
Yesterday, I returned Lexmark 7000 and bought
Epson Color 800 Stylus (the color intensity is better
on this printer anyways, however, to be fare -- Lexmark
has laser quality blackwhite).

I still would like to know how to configure it for linux.
Here is my printcap file (someone asked to see it).

-

# /etc/printcap: printer capability database. See printcap(5).
# You can use the filter entries df, tf, cf, gf etc. for
# your own filters. See the printcap(5) manual page for further
# details.

lp|Generic dot-matrix printer entry
:lp=/dev/lp1
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp
:af=/var/log/lp-acct
:lf=/var/log/lp-errs
:pl#66
:pw#80
:pc#150
:mx#0
:sh

# rlp|Remote printer entry
# :lp=
# :rm=remotehost
# :rp=remoteprinter
# :sd=/var/spool/lpd/remote
# :mx#0
# :sh

---

My ultimate goal is to be able to go to StarOffice print button
say print -- and it will print (in color if I asked to).

I also would like the linux box to be the print server (it is already
a samba server) -- but that's the next step.

I also think that my LPT port in not lpt1 but lpt2 (I am not sure how
to verify that from linux).

As I mentioned earlier I installed gs-alladin.deb and magicfileters --
but I do not know where to go next. I read printcap manual page
but it talks about a simple bash script to print somehow to the printer
--
I have no clue as what it talks about... actually.

Thanks in advance for any help,
Vladislav

Vladislav,

Even though it says that it has HP 500C emulation, this just means
that it
will emulate the printer once it has been sucessfully configured by the
operating system. This printer uses a Host based Windows printing
system. The
printer does not function under any operating systems/environments than
Windows
3.x and Windows 95. I've been testing it under DOS and NT 4.0. It
does not
work under either of these.
The printer requires a device driver in order to function. You will
see the
same effect if you boot under DOS and try to copy a file to the LPT
port.
Nothing will be printed on the printer.

RE: Rogue Wave lib

1997-09-22 Thread Vladislav Papayan x285
RogueWave has Tools.h++ which is a library of collection and utility
classes. Also they have DBTools.h which encapsulates Database access to
different databases (Informix native, Oracle native, Sybase native, and
ODBC).

There are a lot of libraries that can be used in place of tools.h -- OSE
for example, is one of the most advances free libraries that I have seen
so far,
then goes YACL (it has generic classes + UI (like wxWindows)). Also I
think
that in the near feature STL will become more prevalent in the world of
collection
classes. However strings, dates, records, logging, debugging classes
(like
the ones provided by OSE or YACL) will still be widely used.

As far as DBTools.++ -- I do not know of ANY other company that provide
that type of
encapsulation of the DB access (and this market is *very* lucrative if
someone
would like to step into the land of ESQL encapsulation -- it is not that
hard too -- I always wonder what ObjectSpace is waiting for).

Also I think RW does not officially support GNU CC -- however, I think
there are
a lot of reports that those libraries could be compiled with GNU cc
which means
they could be used on Linux (of course of DBTools.h you would need a
database specific ESQL development environment)

Vladislav

By the way,
if anyone would like to start a free project on DB access encapsulation
for
multiple DB vendors -- count me in as a help.

another pentium 100 and find the motherboard that will support
