File System - a stupid question ;)

2006-02-17 Thread Wodzu Wodzowski
I want to install Debian on laptop, but I want to have ReiserFS/Reiser4 or XFS
file system. I've found that I can convert/create partition with one of above
file system. Can I install Sarge on Reiser/XFS partition??

Hmmm, I can read :> But I don't know why it can not mount root file system??
hda5 is proper root partition. I don't understand why it is doin' mounting on
(0,0) [unknown-block(0,0)]. Can You explain it to me?

kernel 2.6.14 instalation

2005-11-20 Thread Wodzu Wodzowski
Hy.
I tried to compile and install a kernel, and I made kernel package
(2.6.14.191105_i386.deb)> Everything seemed to be ok, so I used 'dpkg -i
kernel-image... and got a message that everything is ok. But when I
rebooted the system I received 'kernel panic':

"VFS: Cannot open root device >>hda5<< or uknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct >>root=<< boot option
Kernel panic- not syncing:VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)"

Grub list file looks like that:

Kernel
root(0,4)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda5 ro

Can You tell me what's wrong, please??

two problems: 1. dvd drives ; 2.speedtouch modem

2005-11-05 Thread Wodzu Wodzowski
Hy, It's me again ;) I've got tw problems;
1.
First is with my dvd roms. I have one dvd writer and one dvd rom. Both are
detected and mounted properly (think so..) but when I want to open dvd to take
away my disc, I can't do that. There's no problem with dvd writer, because I
can right-click on the icon and clik open. When I wanna do the same with dvd,
there's only 'unmount'. The configurations in '/etc/fstab' is the same for both
drives;
---
/dev/hdd/mnt/dvd iso9660ro,user,auto00
/dev/hdc/mnt/dvdrw iso9660ro,user,auto00
---

2.
I've got another problem as well :p ;)
Know, that You've heard thousands questions as for thomson speedtouch 330
modem, but something's wrong :>
I downloaded speedtouch driver ('speedtouch-06-03-2005.tar.gz') and untar this,
put the thomson driver (alcaudsl.sys) into a new folder
('speedtouch-06-03-2005'), run 'speedtouch.sh' scrypt and received message like
that: "No USB bus found". Checked 'cat /proc/bus/usb/devices' and found that
USB are detected. And I don't understand what's goin' on :/ Hope You do.
Thanks for any answer.

permission to access to ntfs partition

This *is* the wrong list, as mentioned - but anyway. I don't know why
you use both the "user" and "auto" flags. For one thing, "auto" is
already the default, so does not need to be specified; for another,
"user" is usually used with "noauto" instead (people normally want
either "user, noauto" or the defaults of "nouser, auto").

But what you do want is the flag "umask=0" as explained below:
..< <
/dev/hda2 /mnt/winD ntfs ro,umask=0 0 0 < <
/dev/hda2 /mnt/winD ntfs ro,umask=0,user,noauto 0 0 < <
  < <
(Depending on your desired configuration.)< <
..< <

> So I checked attributes of this file and use 'chmod 777
> ...' and stiil don't have access to this partition.

chmod does not work with the ntfs filesystem: the Linux kernel code for
ntfs does not bother to read or write permissions information for
files, since NT permissions are so different from Unix permissions.
(User and group IDs would have to be mapped from one space to the
other, and the classic Unix permission bits don't exist per se in Win32
either. Windows files have ACLs instead.) The only way to control the
permissions presented is the "umask" option at mount time.

I did as I was told, and I still haven't got an acces to my windows partition
from user other than root. I tried supermount (found at google) as well and now
I've got no idea what to do.. :(((
