Re: dist-upgrade broke srage
I was finally able to get lilo working again, but kernel panics (image 2.6.8-1-k7) VFS: Cannot open root device 301 or unknown-block(3,1) Please append a correct root= boot option Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(3,1) I have no idea what this means, but this is as close as I've come to getting this resolved. in my lilo.conf, I have boot=/dev/hda root=/dev/hda1 What I did was this: Booting to knoppix cd, I was able to mount all of my partitions, then I did chroot to my hda1 partition. doing this was able to do apt-get install --reinstall kernel-image-2.6.8-1-k7 (I still have the .deb in my apt cache) and it did go thru the install and it asked me all kinds of lilo questions. It created a new lilo.conf which looks drammitacally different (it only hase one image= defined) but for some reason I still get my old lilo boot menu as if it were getting it from somewhere else! Being fed up with this, I did apt-get remove lilo and did apt-get install grub when that was done I did grub-install /dev/hda. I rebooted and I got the grub prompt: grub so I did grub kernel /vmlinuz (vmlinuz is symlink to kernel-2.6.7-1-k7) grub initrd /initrd.img grub root (grub uses (hd0,0) ) grub boot the kernel begins to boot and it gets to a new and completely different kernel panic: pivot_root: No such file or directory /sbin/init: 426: connot open dev/console: No such file Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init! This really should not be this difficult. Either lilo or grub should be working. The kernel should work. What am I missing? Jim __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail - You care about security. dist-upgrade broke srage
I just did a dist-upgrade on my sarge installation and for some reason it tried to re-install my kernel image. I'm using kernel-image-2.6.8-1-k7. Now I get a kernel panic. I then discovered thru google that there is a criticle bug in sarge. I booted to an old debian cd hoping to use it as a rescue CD but that didn't work: it can't mount any of my partitions from my 80GB drive. So, I am now waiting for a sarge CD image of disk one to download hoping that the newer kernel will detect the drive. That is my plan, but if anyone knows of any reasin why this shouldn't work please let me know.. If anyone has any new information about the status of the criticle bug in sarge please post. If this is the wrong list to be post this to let me know and I do appologize. Please cc me on any replys. Thanks Jim __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail - You care about security. OT: google or debian-user?
It is a shame that at times debian-user can be so inhospitable to debain users. I think it is unfair to have a question answered with try google or some other variation of RTFM. Am I to understand that instead of using the debian-user list that I should use a search engine? I was under the impression that the debian-user list was a forum for debian users. I always search the debain-user archives before asking a question and if I don't find an answer then I ask my question. Generally I do not do google searches unless I am seaking global information such as is my hardware supported under linux. But I know that debain does things differently than the way other distros do things, (otherwise there would be no need for .deb packages, right?) so in most cases I figure the problem has something to do with a debain specific driver or setting. I am rather new to linux in general and have ever only used Debian so I am not familiar with what is just specific to debian and what is global across all linux distros. I suppose I could have asked is my issue at hand something that is supported differently in debian than other distros or do all distros support it the same? but that is even more annoying than asking the question outright. However I will in the future assume that any problem I have is the same in all distros and I will do searches on the web first. I concede to RT proverbial FM even if that M is spread across all of the known Internet. Who knows? maybe I will never again need to post a message to the debain user list. One can only hope... -END RANT- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
kernel panic on boot floppy
One more thing I tried last night. I created the bf24 boot floppies from the debian 3.0r1 CD but got a kernel panic. I also downloaded the unstable boot floppies from one of the debian primary sites and again got a kernel panic. Then I took out the western digital and installed the new Seagate to the SIIG primary channel. I was hoping the SIIG was smart enough to boot from cd but it didn't. I removed the cd-rom and cd-rw from the SIIG and attached them back to the secondary onboard ide and re-enabled it in the BIOS. SIIG detected my new Seagate, the BIOS detected both CD drives and the Debian woody cd booted but the debian installation didn't see the new Seagate. Maybe the SIIG isn't even compatible with linux? installing woody using siig ultra ata/133 pci card
Hi all, I'm trying to install woody (3.0r1) from CD's on a PC with an AMD K6 II 500mhz and a brand new Seagate 80GB Barracuda Ultra ata/100 and a brand new SIIG ultra ata/133 pci controller. in addition to the new Seagate, the pc has an IO Magic CD-ROM and an LG CD-RW. Prior to buying the new Seagate and the new SIIG controller the pc ran fine with a 2GB Western Digital connected to the on board IDE. First I tested the the SIIG controller by connecting the old western digital to it's primary channel and connected the cd-rom and cd-re to it's secondary channel. I disabled the onboard ide in the BIOS. I booted. The SIIG sucessfully detected all drives and linux booted. Every worked. Then I took out the western digital and installed the new Seagate to the SIIG primary channel. I was hoping the SIIG was smart enough to boot from cd but it didn't. The SIGG detected all drives but wouldn't boot the cd. Now here's where I start my trial and error. I'm not sure what is the best configuration to use at this point. Is there a boot floppy out there that I can use to get the installation going? How can I get the debian installation to see the Seagate? Maybe the SIIG isn't even compatible with linux? Is there a boot floppy out there that I can use to get the installation going? How can I get the debian installation to see the Seagate? Jim Did you try fdisk the first thing after you booted the CD? No, the installation doesn't see the drive and says something like (paraphrasing) Since there is no hard drive you must be trying to install from a network. Please configure your network settings to continue Usually I would get a prompt to create a swap partition then a prompt to create a root filesystem. I've been reading many differing opinions about this. Some say the kernel should detect the drive, others say I need to install knoppix then do a dist-upgrade to linux. I'm confused. Should the bf2.4 image work and if not does anyone know where I can get a boot image that will work? Thanks! Jim -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? something weird happened to my cd-rw
Hi all, something weird happened to my cd-rw after upgrade. I upgraded to testing and installed the kernel-image-2.3.24-1-k6. I logged on, ran startx and then ran xcdroast. Everything seemed to be working. I put in a 650MB cd-r disk into my cd-rw drive and began to make a backup of some files. at about 98% I got a write error. hmm.. that seemed strange. I mounted the cd-r in my cd-rom drive but got an error saying no compatible filesystem. So, I popped the cd-r into my Windows PC and the disk seems fine. all of my files are there. So back over to debian I popped in another cd-r disk and... xcdroast says I have no cd-rw drive. It also can not detect my cd-rom drive. I did not reboot or anything before popping in the second cd-r disk. very strange. So I ran modconf thinking that the ide-scsi driver wasn't loaded anymore. The ide-scsi module was in fact loaded sSo I removed it and added it back. Then I added an append statement to my lilo.conf here is the image entry in my lilo.conf: default=Linux image=/vmlinuz label=Linux read-only initrd=/initrd.img append=hdc=scsi hdd=scsi # restricted # alias=1 I looked in /etc/modules.conf and there is no entry for ide-scsi. With the system the way it is right now I am able to mount both the cd-rom and the cd-rw from /dev/scd0 and /dev/scd1 respectively but I can not get xcdroast to detect the drives. cdrecord -scanbus gives me the following information: #begin cdrecord -scanbus Cdrecord-Clone 2.01a25 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2004 Jörg Schilling NOTE: this version of cdrecord is an inofficial (modified) release of cdrecord and thus may have bugs that are not present in the original version. xf86cfg crashes
Hello, I ran xf86cfg, but as soon as I selected the mouse (using the number pad to navigate) it crashed. I did this about 10 times before I gave up. Then I used XF86Config and I set the resolution to 1024x786, but when xfree came up it still had the old resolution of 800x600. at this point I turned off my machine. xf86cfg crashes when I try to configure mouse
I have just upgraded debian 2.2 r3 to debian 3.0 r1 (from CD). Xfree runs perfectly. However, I need to reconfigure the resolution. I currently have 800x600 and would like to have 1024x786. I was dismayed after learning that XF86Setup was no longer a part of Debian. I tried to use xf86cfg but it crashes as soon as I select the mouse button. XF86Setup and xf86config are for X3.3. For X4 do #dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 Ok, here's where I get confused. I have plenty of questions for everyone so please bear with me. I do have X3.3.6 running... apparently. I had thought that a dist-upgrade to woody would install X4 but it would seem it did not. The dist-upgrade did create an X4 XF86Config in /etc/X11 which is why I couldn't get X running after the upgrade. Now for the confusing part: I _did_ install xserver-xfree86 using apt-get install xserver-xfree86 and it installed fine but X3.3.6 is still what gets loaded when I run startx. Very strange. I don't really have a preference as to whether I have X3.3.6 or X4 installed as long as it works. ;-) so, how do I get one fully installed and the other fully removed and why didn't dist-upgrade take care of this? Now, since I apparently do have X3.3.6 running, should I remove xserver-xfree86? Perhaps that is what's keeping my XF86Setup from working? Or should I remove the X3.3.6 packages and get X4 working (and thus put back the X4 XF86Config)? My fonts are different. I think some font packages didn't get installed. My confusion is regarding adding my user name to a new group and changing the group of the sound device. between usermod, chgrp, chown, I'm confused. what do I need to do to get my user name to access the sound device? The group audio is there for this purpose. You do not have to add it, is is already there on debian systems. On my system, the audio devices are owned by the group audio. Example: ls -l /dev/dsp shows: crw-rw1 root audio 14, 3 Jul 9 2000 /dev/dsp In fact, if you do ls -l /dev | grep audio, you'll see the whole lot of audio devices. So all you need to get access to these devices is to be in group audio. Do, as root, addgroup user audio to add user to that group. Now the user has to either login again (or restart x11), or type newgrp in the shell from which to access audio devices. You can check the groups you are (or really: your process is) currently in with the id and groups commands. Cheers, Joost __ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! Next to each function name is the matching man page name. for instance, clear() has the man page clear(3NCURSES). when I type man clear(3NCURSES) i get [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/src$ man clear(3NCURSES) bash: syntax error near unexpected token `clear(3' However, I did find that particular page in /usr/share/man/man3/clear.3ncurses.gz How do I view this page using the man command? I have had this problem with many other pages, not just ncurses. thanks!! xucaen __ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! Mail. http://personal.mail.yahoo.com/

pseudo-OT: curious -- why GPM????
Hi all! In the few months that I have been reading the debian user list, I have seen many many posts about the conflicts GPM seems to have with X. I have never used GPM, but I thought it was only something to be used in a text-only environment. Is there really any significant advantage to using it under X? I've read about users banging their heads against a wall trying to get it to work, and I was curious it it is really worth it and if maybe I should be using it. What does it do? (I don't have any man or info pages installed) xucaen __ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! Mail. http://personal.mail.yahoo.com/
C++ man pages. (was: Re: Missing C Lib man pages)
--- Shaul Karl [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: You need to install the manpages-dev package (apt-get install manpages-dev). You might also consider the glibc-doc package since it gives you a broader perspective for libc. Hi all, This is propaply a really dumb question, but is the libg++ (or libstdc++ ?) manpages included in the manpages-dev package? Are the info pages in there also? thanks! xucaen p.s. ncurses.h? __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Auctions - Buy the things you want at great prices! http://auctions.yahoo.com/

Re: man
Hi, I'm not sure if this is relevant, but my very first time installing debian on an intel, I failed to install any man pages, and everytime I used man, it couldn't find anything.. Is it possible that man didn't get installed on your Imac? xucaen --- Nic Ferrier [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I've just installed debian (potato) on an IMac (which went rather well all things considered). I've upgraded the kernel to 2.4.2-pre4 (a PPC kernel release) and everything seemed to be going well. However, I've just noticed that man doesn't find the man pages. All the pages seem to be installed and mandb is set up correctly... it's just not working. I also tried setting the MANPATH to the same location as the mandb stuff but that didn't work either. Is man broken or something? or am I doing something incredibly wrong? man works on the 5 other debian (intel) machines I have here. I'm very confused. Please help. Re: Linksys ISA
hi! I am running 5 systems, each using a linksys 16 ISA. It works wonderfully with linux!! I used the setup disk to manually set the IRQ and address on the card, then use the linux NE2000 driver. If you have any problems, let me know. I have 3 debian machines using these linksys cards. :-) xucaen --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi, I am setting up another Debian box. Hi all.. when I use xjed, my number keypad doesn't work, but it works in xterm, and it works in netscape, and a few other programs. Is this an xjed feature or maybe I do not have my keyboard set up properly? I use Xfree 3.3.6, debian 2.2r2 thanks! xucaen __ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo!
