You could run the script alsa-info (from alsa-utils) and choose to
upload/share, and send the link to this list.

Hope this helps.

I am allergic to ads.

So I use an adblocker, ublock origin.

Have a local searx as search engine.

99.% of the visited sites are without ads, no tracking.

Hope this helps.

The bug was in securetty.

I added following to /etc/securetty

# systemd containers
pts/0
pts/1
pts/2
pts/3
pts/4
pts/5
pts/6
pts/7
pts/8
pts/9

and everything works again.
I can log in as root several times.

systemd-container login as root no longer possible?

2019-07-11 Thread arne
After upgrading my containers from stretch to buster I can no longer
log in as root

I make the container with debootstrap, then

# systemd-nspawn --directory=/mnt/mycontainer passwd

then I start the container with

# systemd-nspawn --register=yes -D /mnt/mycontainer /sbin/init &

then

# machinectl login mycontainer

gives me a login screen

When I enter "root"
no password prompt is shown

In stretch containers there is no problem, I get the password prompt
and can log in as root.

I tried with buster to make a new container on buster, can not log in.

Perhaps it is a new feature of systemd?

Lucky me, I had copies of my stretch containers.

Is this a bug or am I missing something?

The Devuan default desktop is Xfce. Cinnamon, KDE, LXQt and MATE are
available from tasksel during installation and a number of other

I found out PID 1 is killed when I tried to reboot:

Perhaps that test was a little too short so I let it run a little
longer:

# while true; do kill -ILL 1 ; echo -n "." ; sleep 0.5 ; done
..^C

again no problem here.

and when you right click, choose Preferences, puTTY style paste, you

Shift middle click gives you Preferences then.

middle button click = paste

firefox palemoon waterfox baselisk problem, not on chromium

2018-10-19 Thread arne
Hi,
While browsing on stock updated Debian stretch I get several times a
day:

Secure Connection Failed

The connection to www.google.com was interrupted while the
page was loading.

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the
authenticity of the received data could not be verified.

Please
contact the website owners to inform them of this problem.

---
I don't think a message from me to google will solve this problem.

---
I get this message several times a day, for any website,
and the pages are not loaded.

Tried a lot of things I found on internet, most of them from several
years ago. None of them helped.

Disabled all my add-ons, did not help.

Reset my browsers in a maiden state, did not help.

By-passed my proxies, did not help.

Those sites all load OK in Chromium, but I do not like this browser.

Strange thing, when I retry 2-80 times the pages get loaded.

I use Tab Mix Plus Mozilla add-on to reload every 2 seconds until the
pages load.

In short:
Secure Connection Failed

Any ideas what can be the solution?

Thanks!

trouble by new install of claws mail

2018-09-13 Thread arne
The message:

"Your Claws Mail configuration is from a newer version than the version
which you are currently using."

Claws Mail is right.

I did copy Claws settings from debian testing to a new system on stable.

I do not want to loose my settings.

Claws seems to work OK but the message remains.

Any ideas on how to solve this?

And no, I do not want to switch to testing again.

Thanks!

Although I can not remember I actually needed it (Debian rocks),
but I like to live on the safe side.

grml iso from local disc boots faster than debian from
netinstall image, and it gives you a load of tools more too.
It is nicely added to your grub menu.

This brings you to the 3 blurays disks for a complete jigdo amd 64,
perhaps you can combine them:

Re: Printing problem Sadly NOT SOLVED

2018-01-17 Thread arne
This printer Brother HL-L2340DW has buggy firmware.

When re-installed it killed my CUPS.
.

I can no longer use my local CUPS webpage, my root/admin password is not
accepted.

I instead use system-config-printer, which runs fine.
Thanks to this program I can at least print as root.

But I cannot recommend Brother

On my second PC it runs OK, I never installed it here, just now after
the fiaso on my main PC.

So my hint is: never change a running system!

The Japanese at Brother just want to sell more printers, at least,
 that is my assumption.

Have a good New Year!

PS never update your Brother laser printer and never buy them.

Re: Printing problem SOLVED

2018-01-15 Thread arne
Hi,

It was a problem with rights.
I do not know how they were changed.
I could print as root, not as user.
Printing with qpdfview as root worked.
Firefox, Geany, Gimp I started as user, and I could not print with
those.

The solution for my printer with brother_lpdwrapper_HLL2340D was:

/usr/lib/cups/filter/brother_lpdwrapper_HLL2340D is a link to
/opt/brother/Printers/HLL2340D/cupswrapper/brother_lpdwrapper_HLL2340D

Permissions (octal) should be:

100755

Owner name: root
Group name: root

Thanks!

In qpdfview the printer is visible and prints!

In Firefox, Gimp and Geanny the printer does not appear

Both macines are running debian stretch updated daily
No complaints from CUPS, but their drivers don't show up
Both are running amd64

Printing problem

2018-01-14 Thread arne
Hi,

My printer suddenly didn't show up in the Print Windows
of Libre Office, Firefox and a lot of other programs.

I can however Print to File in pdf or ps and print those with lpr
from the command line.

The printer shows up in CUPS page and I can print the test page from
CUPS.

I did try reinstalling its driver software, removed and added the
printer with CUPS again.

It is a WiFi Brother HL-L2340DW laserprinter.

some data I collected, I can not find any error there:
###
# lpstat -t
scheduler is running
system default destination: HLL2340D
device for BrGenML1: usb://dev/usb/lp0
device for HLL2340D: socket://192.168.2.7
device for PDF: cups-pdf:/
BrGenML1 accepting requests since Sun 14 Jan 2018 06:19:20 PM CET

printer HLL2340D is idle. enabled since Sun 14 Jan 2018 07:56:30 PM CET
printer PDF is idle. enabled since Sun 14 Jan 2018 04:39:50 PM CET

To find the available printers, at a terminal type:
# lpstat -p -d
printer BrGenML1 is idle. enabled since Sun 14 Jan 2018 06:19:20 PM CET
printer HLL2340D is idle. enabled since Sun 14 Jan 2018 07:56:30 PM CET
printer PDF is idle. enabled since Sun 14 Jan 2018 04:39:50 PM CET
system default destination: HLL2340D

Then to pick one as the default lpd printer, type:
# lpoptions -d HLL2340D
copies=1 device-uri=socket://192.168.2.7 finishings=3
job-cancel-after=10800 job-hold-until=no-hold job-priority=50
job-sheets=none,none marker-change-time=1515956190
marker-colors=#00,none marker-levels=-1,97 marker-names='Black\ Tone

Then type lpq to see if the printer you selected is now the default:
# lpq
HLL2340D is ready
no entries

To show all printers that accept jobs:
# lpstat -a
BrGenML1 accepting requests since Sun 14 Jan 2018 06:19:20 PM CET
HLL2340D accepting requests since Sun 14 Jan 2018 07:56:30 PM CET

debian CD's DVD's

2018-01-11 Thread arne
Hi there!

In the past it was possible to download debian cd's dvd's so one could
have a full debian at home.
Now this is not possible, I am missing some links?
The jigdo files do not work nowadays too.
The maximum debian you can get nowadays is 3 DVD's.
The rule seems to be a fast internet connection nowadays!
Am I missing some links?

Thanks, and a happy new year!

Debian should run on the Gemini PDA, an Android handhold device.
In dual boot.
It is not ready yet though.
Should be ready this month.

Hello,

TestDisk checks the partition and boot sectors of your disks.
It is very useful in forensics, recovering lost partitions.

PhotoRec is file data recovery software designed to recover lost
pictures from digital camera memory or even Hard Disks. It has been
extended to search also for non audio/video headers.

Both are in the packet testdisk

Hope this helps,

Greeting.

Hi,

When you care about spending too much ink on printing while testing,
I can recommend

to install libreoffice writer

and then download

1cm-paper.odt ,this one spills minimal ink

You can download it here:

https://extensions.libreoffice.org/templates/1cm-squared-paper

This one is a good demonstration to compare printing in 600 dpi or
1200 dpi.

greetings.

I forgot to mention, when logged in:

http://your-printers-ip-adress/print/print.html

you can switch from 600 (standard) to 1200 dpi :)

Not well documented I guess, but gives nicer printout.

Hi,

It is inside hll2340dcupswrapper-3.2.0-1.i386.deb.

In the /opt/brother/Printers/HLL2340D/cupswrapper directory.

I got this deb-file from:

http://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadtop.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=hll2340dw_us_eu_as

I guess you have to enable 386 files. I have an AMD64 system.

Hope this helps.

Greetings.

I am sory but I do not like Apache on my system behind a VPN.
I am running nginx, and I like to keep it that way. Do you think an
extra apache server won't hurt in this set-up?

While Debian prefer to keep the hardware clock in UTC (this prevents
the need to change it on daylight savings and timezone changes) other
systems (like Windows) by default keeps the hardware clock synchronized
to local time. To keep the hardware clock sane and the time correctly
displayed by multiple systems they need to agree on which timezone the
hardware clock is kept at.

In Debian the timezone for the hardware clock is configured in the
file /etc/adjtime;

0.00 14602224559 0.00
1460224559
UTC

Edit /etc/adjtime, and change "UTC" to "LOCAL" if you want the hardware
clock to be kept at local time instead of UTC.

updating ifupdown conflicts with systemd

2016-01-12 Thread arne
Hello,

On my Stretch system updating ifupdown conflicts with systemd.
I removed ifupdown.
I got network problems (no loopback) so I wanted to reinstall ifupdown,
with no luck.

I tried to remove systemd and did not fully succeed, now I get no
login after a reboot.

Booting in safe mode does not give me a login prompt either.
I guess I have to reinstall my system, this time it will be the stable
branch.

Any help appreciated,

Thanks

Since I have no control over which "mirror" security.debian.org resolves
to, Release and Release.gpg may come from different machines. At least
when running through apt-cacher, this leads to frequent BADSIG warnings,
which tends to undermine the credibility of signature checking in apt.

Is there a strong reason why the files are allowed to be different?

Thanks

How to create own keyboard layouts for X.org and Console?

2007-05-28 Thread Arne Götje (高盛華)

Hi list,

what is the Debian way to create custom keyboard layouts for X.org and
Console for locales which don't exist yet in Linux?

I would need to define the following new "dead keys":

or alternatively (not the same like
!)
 (not )

and map them to the appropriate keys. Further more I would need to
define the combinations with the dead keys to be used...
The resulting characters would be Unicode only, mapping to legacy ISO
encodings is not possible here.

Where to put the files and how to register them to the system?

Thanks

Building module packages for the i386 kernel 2.6.18-4-amd64

2007-02-23 Thread Arne Nordmark

Hello,

I found out about the recent (re)addition of amd64 kernels to the i386
architecture.

I downloded the linux-headers-2.6.18-4-amd64 version 2.6.18.dfsg.1-11
and tried building modules on an etch i386 system (running 2.6.18-3-k7)
with module-assistant, but the two modules I tried (openafs and nvidia)
failed to compile.

I guess that gcc needs to be called with -m64, but I do not know how to
get module-assistant (or make-kpkg) to include that compiler option.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Arne

How do your environment variables GTK_IM_MODULE and QT_IM_MODULE look like?
Make sure both are set to "xim" and *not* "scim".
Also make sure that an environment variable XMODIFIERS="@im=SCIM" exists.

another font problem in xorg

2006-05-11 Thread Arne Götje (高盛華)
Hi list,

I'm using unstable (updated today).
When I use X applications which don't use fontconfig, but the plain old
X method to find fonts (e.g. fontforge), I get complaints like this:

Help! Server claimed font
-bitstream-courier-medium-r-normal--13-0-0-0-m-0-iso8859-1
existed in the font list, but when I asked for it there was nothing.
 I think I'll crash soon.

In the application itself I see the famous questionmarks instead of
latin characters... :(

Does anyone have an idea what is going on here and how to fix this?

Try the ttf-unfonts package. The Unfonts are nicer than baekmuk. :)
And they are recognized by fontconfig.

This depends on the font if it supports this feature or not. AFAIK the
Hangul/Hanja conversion is simply a substitution feature in OTF/TTF. If
the font doesn't support this (and I guess they don't, because it's a
lot of work to do the mapping), then the OO.o function won't work.

3ware Escalade 8000 series work perfect for me. :) RAID driver is
already included in stock kernel, but I had to put it into /etc/modules

XIM in KDE broken again?

2004-09-30 Thread Arne Götje (高盛華)
Hi list,

after my latest update of KDE on sid, XIM doesn't work again in any qt
application. GTK2 is not affected. This has also happened before, but
then after KDE 3.3.0 came out, it worked again. Now it''s broken again.

Can anyone verify this and propose a fix?

Ok, let me pose the question in a different way. :)
1. which languages do you want to input?
Different languages => different solutions.
2. Do you prefer the traditional xkb method, or a gui solution where you
can choose multiple language modules and switch between them on the
fly?

First of all, as you have already noticed, Unicode input is still in its
infancy on Linux...

So, currently you have to decide on which specific input methods you
want.

Please specify, which methods you want, then I can give you advice how
to do this. Also note that it depends on the application you are using.
Mozilla and OpenOffice can only handle the XIM protocol in the moment,
same as KDE. GTK2 apps have sometimes the possibility to use newer
approaches, but not all of them work...
I myself use Chinese, Japanese and west european characters on my US
keyboard with a selfmade but by far not perfect solution.

Well, this doesn't work for me... :(
I'm trying exactly this to start my XIM program in the background:
/usr/local/bin/xcin -x xcin &

It just doesn't start. I have to start it manually for each session in
my konsole window.
So, I suppose the /.xsession does not get executed with the debian
version of X. Also my xmodmap settings in the same file don't get
executed.

I even tried to make a custom file in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/45_xim,
also no success.

Proper place to put xmodmap and stuff?

Hi list,

what is the proper place to put xmodmap and other X related stuff, like
XMODIFIER environment variable and starting a XIM server in the
background?

Currently I have everything in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/ in a seperate
script. But this does not work with KDE correctly, while GTK2 apps have
no problem and work as expected.

I'm using KDM. An other places I can put the script?

The script is just like this:

xmodmap /etc/X11/xmodmap
export [EMAIL PROTECTED]
/usr/local/bin/xcin -x xcin &

Debian testing/unstable and LVM?

Hi list,

are there any success stories using LVM 1/2 (?) on Debian
testing/unstable? I'm planning to use it on a production machine (fresh
installed), which I can only manage from remote via ssh.

The machine will have one 80 GB IDE HD and will function as a LAMP-/
Mailserver.

I'm considering to use the base system on a fixed partition
base /, /usr, /var and the rest as LVM and distribute
over /home, /var/spool, /var/db, and /var/www.

Any suggestions?

How to build alsa-modules from source?

2004-07-14 Thread Arne Götje (高盛華)

Hi list,

how do I build alsa-modules from the alsa-source package the debian way?

I have the kernel-headers for 2.4.25 installed, not the kernel-source
package. I use the debian stock kernel 2.4.25.
The precompiled alsa-modules packge for 2.4.26 is buggy (depmod -a
reports dependency problems, hence my soundcard cannot work).

Thanx for help.

depends on your hard- and software.
In my case, vmware 3.2 doesn't work with the 2.6 kernel, my wacom
graphic tablet doesn't work correctly and ACPI doesn;t work on my
machines... other things I haven't tested so far. I just switched back
to 2.4...

Anyways, be prepared to downgrade again if things don't work out for
you. Maybe it would be a good idea to use a Knoppix or similar
Linux-on-CD system with a 2.6 Kernel and test if everything works.

Cheers

Please see http://tavi.debian.org.tw/index.php?page=Unifonts for the
latest release.

Short description: kai and ming refer to the font shape, which are the
same like the Arphic fonts AR PL ZenKai Medium and AR PL Mingti2L.

The only difference between the -mbe fonts and the other affects the way
the Bopomofo Extensions (used in teaching materials for Minnan / Hakka
in Taiwan) look like. The official glyphs, like they are in the Unicode
standard are not widely accepted, because the glyphs are sometimes hard
to distinguish and not "easy" to write. That's why Mr. Yang Qing-Chu
created a different looking set of these characters. This new set is
used by several publishers in their teaching materials instead of the
official ones nowadays. I simply named them "Modern Bopomofo
Extensions", hence -mbe. An image on how the Extensions look like is on
the link above.

Please note that the current deb packages (0.0.20040229-1) have a little
bug in the hints file. I will upload new ones tonight.

The fonts are frequently updated, as I'm working on including the
missing charachters for HKSCS (Hong Kong) and CNS11643 (Taiwan), which
will yield into GB18030 support (China) later.

The fonts are made as a replacement for the current Arphic fonts in
Debian, although I need some help with the tfm packages...

Cheers

problem with defoma and non-GTK/KDE apps

2004-02-24 Thread Arne Götje (高盛華)
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi list,

I have a very strange problem: normally I have the path for defoma
(/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType) in my XF86Config-4
and
GTK/KDE apps work well.
However, simple x-apps which don't use these libraries wont start but
complain they cannot find any suitable font.

I'm running unstable and my locale is set to en_US.UTF-8. I want to use
ISO10646-1 fonts with my x-apps. Examples where this problem occurs are
xfontsel and xcin (cvs version, which works with UTF8 locales).

When I take the defoma paths out of my X config file and make the
fonts.scale and fonts.dir files manually in /usr/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType
and
link the truetype fonts from /usr/share/fonts/truetype to that
directory,
everything works fine.

So, I suspect defoma to be the culprit. Can someone confirm this
problem?

Cheers

Can't help you with the tuner card, but for the nvidia nic: if you don't
want to compile the manufacturer's drivers (which I can understand),
slip in a cheap realtek card and off you go. That's what I did, mainly
because I had one lying around and I couldn't get my internet access
working with the 2.4.18 kernel. I had to download the new kernel
somehow... :)

well, thanks so far to all who replied...
one more question: it seems that the vendor of the onboard RAID
controller supplies a binary kernel module for the RAID function.
However, this is proprietary stuff. There is also a software RAID driver
which is open source.
Can I enable HW RAID in the Controller menu and use it on the win2k
partition and can I use software RAID in Linux, or will that mess up
everything?
Or is it better to stick to the binary module?

Cheers

RAID question

Hi list,

I have a mainboard (ASUS A7N8X) with onboard SATA controller (SiI 3112A)
and am planning to plug in two SATA drives and use RAID 1 (mirroring)
on them. Besides telling the controller to use them as a RAID array,
what do I have to do on Linux (Debian unstable) to make it recognize
the array?
Is there any software for linux to detect disk failures on the RAID
array, so that I can get alarmed when a drive gets a mad?

Any documentation on the net?

Cheers

Ok, I set the permissions on /usr/X11R6/bin to 755 and that fixed it for me.
The .xsession file was not present in my home directory, but .xsession-errors which
said, it couldn't find certain scripts in the mentioned directory.

Anyways, thanx for help :)

That didn't do it for me yet... but I found another interesting thing:
is it correct that the permissions on /usr/X11R6/bin is 700?
I get complains from Xsession that it cannot find certain scripts in that
directory...

I guess xserver-common sets this permissio as I first chose 'root only' at the
question who should be able to start the xserver... I later changed it to
'anyone', but it seems that didn't fix the permissions...

If this can be confirmed it should be a bug in the xserver-common script.

Cheers
