Re: Starting X/Gnome

2001-06-07 Thread Dada

Hi HawkY,
under /root or your home directory create a file called .xinitrc (be careful!
there's a dot before the 'x') and put in it simply:

gnome-session

In so doing, when you issue startx a gnome session will be run. This is a
powerful way of customizing your desktop.
For instance I have a user for which I put the following two lines in .xinitrc:

./office52/./soffice
icewm

When I run startx a Star Office 5.2 session is started.

Another important file to customize your X window is .xsession which is called
by xdm.

Re: laplink to 286 pc?

2001-05-28 Thread Dada

For the connection via parallel port you should use plip on the linux box and
the related software on the dos box. It works great and speed is fairly good.
Have a look at the rich plip documentation to learn how to do the job.

urgent: ppp server slow

1997-09-26 Thread dada
Hi..
I have an ppp server (whith "mgetty")but it don't work fine.

After the user login,if he does:

ping 192.168.1.1 (the server IP address)

the server reply the ping fine (if I ping the client, when the user is
login, the repply is fine as well).

The problem arose when the user try use one service as see the web page.
If he tries http://192.168.1.1 (to see the server web page), the
conexion is very very slow (but after an *long while*, the client
connect and the user can see the web page).

This problem arose as well whith ftp, mail, each time that the system
must do an connexion (go to an diferent URL,download a file)

q-mail: setup problem

1997-08-26 Thread dada
Hi.

I just installed qmail in my system to replace smail.

When the configurarion script runs, here is that it return me:

**

qmailconfig
Your hostname is antinoo
--here the script stop for a while--
soft error
Sorry,I couldn't find your host's name in DNS
You will have to set up control/me yourself

I understand that the problem is that I have my bind pakage in bad setup
(sorry, I don't know set up it. I answer the questions that scripts
setup ask me, but I don't now do anymore), but I don't understand that
is the last line: "You will have to set up control/me yourself".

what can i solve this problem?

I seek answer in "usr/doc/qmail", but I don't find it :-) (I'm novice).

Please,help

Thanks

Problem is solved. Thanks by your help.

The problem is due to the frecuency that soport my video card. I retouch
XF86Config by hand y now works.

YeahI'm happy now...but in Redhat it works whith no
modifications. May be that in RedHat I used and RedHat program to setup
my X-windows.

But, I have another question: when I use 16 bit colors and an 800*600
resolution, I can't get virtual screen. Is there someone that can do it?
(Remeber: I have an Trio 64 whith 1Mb and I doubt that it can work whit
this configuration)..I have this problem before when I was RedHat
user :-).

bye.

Yes, I do it...and it works now.

But I think that is an fail in the way of making the new kernel. I think
that, when one user insert one driver into the kernel, the compilatiion
process must check modules that was loading before and remove it (from
/etc/modules) to avoid their loading when the user boots whith new
kernel.

What do you think about?

thanks.

bind

1997-07-28 Thread dada
Hi...

I instaled "bind" pakage to make an DNS server to my local area network
(to learn how setup it).

Before install it, Netscape works fine. But now,ie: when I open and web
page in my hardisk,Netscape don't work fine (it wait too much time and I
have to kill it,becouse it newer open that page). If I stop the deamon
"named" and re-run Netscape,it works fine.

I supose that's a problem due to DNS server, thus I want know how can I
say to DNS server the IP/name of the computers that are into the local
area network?

I just installed "bind" pakage and say it that DNS server is in my own
computer.

Can some one help me?

thanks.

INFERNO & Debian?

1997-07-28 Thread dada
Hi

Today I read an article in a spanish programing magazine called
"Inferno: goodbye to Java" that impact me.

To people that don't know it, INFERNO is an S.O created by Bell Labs
(where work Dennish Ritchie) that mybe supose the "revolution in network
S.O." and kill Java supremacy. This system can work in "emulation mode"
or in "native mode"...sorry but this information isn't OK (it's the
first time that I hear notices about this system).

In that magazine I read that the S.O's support in "emulation mode" will
be: Windows NT,W95,Solaris,IRIX,HP-UX and *Red Hat Linux*. And I ask me,
what happen whith Debian?.

Thus, I like know what's the INFERNO status in Debian?

thanks
