Epson Perfection 1670 Photo and SANE

2004-07-23 Thread debian . list
My new Epson Perfection 1670 Photo was purchased last night, as the
http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html#Z-EPSON listed this as "good means the
device is usable for day-to-day work. Some rather exotic features may be missing".

So to get this unit going I did this:
dhunt:/home/dan# apt-get install libsane libsane-extras hotplug gphoto2 gtkam
sane-utils

Right! I'm using a stock kernel 2.6.6-1-k7 and the command
dhunt:/home/dan# sane-find-scanner
found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8 [EPSON], product=0x011f [EPSON Scanner]) at
libusb:004:007

Good! Now the command
dhunt:/home/dan# scanimage -L
device `snapscan:libusb:004:007' is a EPSON EPSON Scanner flatbed scanner

Now! The documentation seems to be leading me in circles. I have edited
/etc/sane.d/snapscan.conf to
uncomment out the line
/dev/usb/scanner0 bus=usb

Anyone have some gentle guidance or HOWTO I must read to get this scanner sharing my
vacation photo's?

Kind regards,
Dan Hunt

IMAP help

1997-12-30 Thread Debian List
Hi,

I've used imap on a redhat system and it keeps the mailbox file under
/var/spool/mail intact, which allows me to switch between an IMAP client
and using PINE.

I installed the debian imapd package, and although it does keep the
mailbox file _somewhere_ because old messages still are retrievable, they
are NOT in /var/spool/mail, so I can't use PINE to read any old messages!
:(

Can someone tell me where the file is kept, if there is an option to imapd
which tells it to keep the spool file, or what other options do I have?

thanks
Ricardo

Right now I can only view my old messages thru imap... I can't use PINE
anymore to get at them :(

How to make boot + root disk? - Please Help!

1997-12-04 Thread Debian List
Hi,

How can I make a bootable diskette that has a minimal root filesystem on
it (maybe just mount, cp, ps, e2fsck, /etc and probably no networking)??

I know how to make a bootable disk by copying the kernel and using rdev,
however I don't know how I'd place a root filesystem on the diskette.

This would be extremely useful for disaster recovery, like the goof I did
yesterday by accidentally wiping out ld.so

Please advise!

Thanks
Ricardo

HELP!!! ld.so disaster!!

1997-12-03 Thread Debian List
Hi!

I was checking my machine for exploits, and one of the vulnerabilities
encountered was due to having an older ld_so, and the script recommended
that I upgrade to ld_so_1.9.3 or greater...

To my disaster, I saw that the only ld_so greater than 1.8 was in the hamm
section... upon attempting to upgrade to the hamm 1.9.6 it screwed
everything up!!! And it seems EVERYTHING, including ls, cp, vi, dpkg, etc
etc is
DYNAMICALLY LINKED!!! So I've lost my ld.so, and I can't seem to find a
way to do anything anymore! NONE of the critical utilities function
anymore!

PLEASE HELP!!! HOW CAN I SOLVE THIS PROBLEM??
PLEASE REPLY TO [EMAIL PROTECTED]

thanks
Ricardo

RAID controllers?

1997-11-22 Thread Debian List
Hi,

Does anyone have experience with RAID controllers such as Mylex DAC960 or
DPT2144UWR ??

I assume they're supported under linux, right?

Question, do any of these support automatic recovery? I heard the DPT
needs to be booted up into DOS in order to perform a rebuild... Is that
true? What about the Mylex?

Although an interactive rebuild is fine, auto recovery would be wonderful.

thanks
Ricardo

Re: How to use dpkg -b ??

1997-11-18 Thread Debian List
Thanks...

But given the 3 files (diff, dsc, tar), how do I use dpkg-buildpackage? I
tried running it but it says it can't find debian/changelog and can't
determine the source package...

Also, what would be the procedure to customize/patch a package? Would I
untar the original source, make mods to the source, tar it up again, and
then build the package? I'm fuzzy as to what the procedure would be in
order to customize a package.

If I make changes to the original source, wouldn't that invalidate the
diff file?

thanks

How to use dpkg -b ??

1997-11-18 Thread Debian List
Hi guys,

I've grabbed the source files for a package (.diff.gz, .dsc, .tar.gz) but
now I don't know what to do ;)

I thought the process was to use dpkg -b but that didn't work.

How do I go about it? I need to customize some of the .h files, then I'd
like to build the package...

Can someone help?

thanks

what do I need to do to fix perl for that?

easiest way to upgrade?

1997-10-14 Thread Debian List
Hi,

what's the easiest way to upgrade packages, specially if there have been
some security updates and we're not sure of what should be upgraded?

For example, from a baseline 1.2 install, how can I retrieve updated
packages and install them without having to know exactly which ones are
necessary?

Thanks

Re: savelog with "immediate" compress

1997-10-05 Thread Debian List
Yes, thank you.

However, that would cause the "useless" creation of the .0 file because it
will be nearly empty... :( each savelog would take up 2 files.

Anyone used the "logrotate" program (redhat has it)

Thanks
Ricardo
