My Linux box doesn't recognize USB ports ?
I think my Linux box (i386) doesn't recognize USB ports, because I am not able to use the USB joystick. My motherboard hasn't got any USB controller built in, but I have got a PCI card with a USB controller and 2 USB ports. I red some documentation about configuring USB on Linux and I watched "/proc/bus/usb" doesn't exist but only "/proc/bus/pci" and "/proc/pci". I watched in "/proc/pci" my PCI card with the USB controller is recognized... I made my own kernel with USB support (usbcore.o, usb-hdci.o, hid.o, input.o, joydev.o, etc.) and I tested it using: jstest /dev/input/js1 jstest /dev/input/js2 jstest /dev/input/js3 and every time it reported me a message like this "device not found" , but devices are present in : /dev/input/js1 /dev/input/js2 /dev/input/js2 Note : /dev/input/js0 is used by another analog joystick attached to the SB128 PCI (Creative Ensoniq) gameport and it works fine as the sound card. Any idea ? Thank you

RE: quake2
Tu invece sei riuscito a farlo funzionare. I files copiati dalla tua 'fat', erano quelli originali della ID soft? Perché se è così, allora mi "metto il cuore in pace". Joystick attached to Sound Blaster
Hi! I have got Linux Debian 2.1 (slink) on a Pentium with a Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16. I compiled by myself the kernel 2.2.13 and I enabled the joystick support and I installed the joystick package too. All applications don't recognize my Thrust game pad attached to the SB16's game port. Note : I have got the joystick's device (/dev/js0 and /dev/js1). When I run 'jscal 0' or 'jscal 1', Linux show me this error message : "operation not supported by the device" What's wrong ? Thank you.
'acm' doesn't start
Hi! On my 'slink' I can't run 'acm' (the game). When I run 'acm', it shows me this error message : "sound is not supported by the host 'myhost'", where 'myhost' is my linux's box name. I don't understand this error message, because the sound support I think is well configured , because all programs, (accept 'acm') can use it without problem. Note, I have got a Creative Sound Blaster 16. Any idea ? Thank you.
Re: GNOME performance hit on 486?
I have got an Intel Pentium 120Mhz, overclocked to 133, 32 Mbyte of ram, 512 KByte of cache, and I noticed the same poor performance of you. Then I optimized my kernel (2.2.13), compiling it by myself according to my hardware, and now GNOME works a little bit better. Joystick problem
When I run 'jscal 0' or 'jscal 1', I obtain an error message like this : "operation not supported by device". I installed the joystick package, and I am sure I have got the joystick devices (/dev/js0 /dev/js1). I compiled by my-self kernel 2.2.13 on my Debian 2.1, and I enabled the kernel's joystick support. Re: problem with lilo.conf
If you installed lilo on the mbr, you could modify /etc/lilo.conf adding the win98 partitions. In this moment I don't remember the exact syntax, (I am working on WINNT4.0 now), but you could look for it in "/usr/doc/lilo" or 'man lilo' When you will modify "/etc/lilo.conf", don't forget of running 'lilo'. It is necessary for updating lilo's configuration. If you installed lilo in the partition's boot sector, you could use 'fdisk': - active Win98 partition, - deactive Linux partition, - write data the disk - exit from fdisk shutdown -r now I hope my information could help you. bye. -- Memo - Header --- To: debian-user@lists.debian.org cc: From: "Joseph de los Santos" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: 27/01/2000 08:03:30 GMT 27/01/2000 11:27:12 Subject: problem with lilo.conf - Memo - Message -- Hello, I have installed debian to coexist with windows 98 but I can no longer boot windows. my lilo.conf only shows linux.it automatically boots linux and the windows partition is no where to be found. worse, I even forgot to label my windows partition. is there a way this can be fixed? __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com -- Unsubscribe? mail -s unsubscribe [EMAIL PROTECTED] < /dev/null

startup/shutdown problem
During shutdown process, I SOMETIME obtain the following error message : (A) "can't umount /dev/hda3, '/' is busy". When I boot Linux again I obtain : (B) "/dev/hda3 has reached maximum mount count, check forced..." and It seems Linux is scanning my /dev/hda3 partition. At the end : (C) "12345 blocks not contiguous (4.3 %)" (NOTE: 12345 is not the real number, because it change every time) After those strange messages, Linux continue the booting process, normally and all on my System SEEMS ok. I sometime obtain the messages (b)(C) without having the error message (a) previuosly. What's wrong ? Does Linux need 'defrag' as DOS/WINDOWS ?? I have got Debian 2.1 on a Pentium 120 Intel, /dev/hda3 is my primary Linux partition on a "Conner Peripherals Hard disk" with 1.2 GByte. I have got another Linux partition (/dev/hdb2) on a different hard disk (Fujitsu with 4.3 GByte), and I SOMETIME obtain on it the same error messages (A)(B)(C). I have got the kernel 2.2.13 compiled by myself, and I took care of all configuration parameters, but I still have got the problem. During the boot process, I ALWAYS obtain the following message too: (D) "SIOCADDRT: invalid argument" Have you got any idea about those strange behaviours ? Thank you to all.
is 'smail' sleeping ?
In the last days I disturbed you all about exim, because I wasn't able to send e-mail. A lot of you helped me and I wish to thank you all for the attention. But exim didn't work anyway on my system. I SOLVED my problem using 'smail' than 'exim' and BINGO !!! When I tried to use exim, fetchmail showed me some error messages like : "error 550, I can't deliver mail for the following addresses:..."). Now using 'smail', fetchmail works fine too, though my $HOME/.fetchmailrc is the same of when I tried to use exim...?!!? Ok. Now I have got another little problem with 'smail': I have got Debian 2.1 (slink) on a PC (Pentium), and my MUA (mail user agent) is 'mutt'. Does 'smail' put outgoing e-mails in /var/spool/smail/input ? I think that is true, and I think when 'smail complete the delivering, it removes files from the folder above. Well. When I send e-mail on-line (connected to internet), 'smail' often SEEMS sleeping and it takes al lot of time for removing files in /var/spool/smail/input, and then (I think) it takes a lot of times to deliver them too. Is that true ? How can I get 'smail' working faster ? Thank you.

Re: inittab: More than 2 special key combinations?
Hello. You could use 'loadkeys' only for binding predefined action to some key's sequence, but you cannot bind your own scripts to the keys. I have got the old Debian Hammer (2.0 R3, kernel 2.0.34) and I red somewhere that a way to run users's script binded to some key's sequence is 'inittab'. But this new kernel's feature is not well supported yet. I don't know if the newer kernel 2.2.14 manages it at best, and I didn't find out further information about it. I am sorry! Maybe you could look for further information in the last kernel's documentation "/usr/src/linux/Documentation/*". P.S. Multiple E-mail addresses
Hi mail Gurus ! Having two or more ISP's smart hosts (and 2 or more e-mail addresses), I need to choice which e-mail address to use for sending e-mail time by time. I usually use 'smail' on my Debian Linux box. Is it possible to set smail/linux for managing multiple e-mails address, without changing the configuration files time by time ? Thanks.
How to customize the keyboard under X ?
Hi to all ! How can I customize my keyboard under X ? I mean without X (bash), I can use 'loadkeys ' and all works fine. But under X, the keyboard's customization doesn't work. I think X uses anything about Xmodemap, but I haven't further information. Another problem under X, is Joe's (editor) keys don't work properly (especially arrows). Why ? Thank you to all.
