“Secure Connection Failed” Error in Firefox
Hello Debian users! When accessing the website https://gontijoonibus.gontijo.com.br/ on Firefox Android (on my smartphone), the site is accessed normally. However, when attempting to access this site on the desktop, Debian Firefox-ESR version 115.8.0esr (64-bit), the following error occurs: Secure Connection Failed An error occurred during a connection to gontijoonibus.gontijo.com.br. The page you are trying to view cannot be displayed because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified. Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem. Learn more… I have already changed the minimum accepted TLS protocol value from 3 to 1 in about:config, but this did not resolve the issue. I have also deleted the ~/.mozilla folder and it was recreated, but without success. How can I solve this problem? Thank you so much! -- Marcelo

10,916 V looks a bit odd to me. After your comments, I looking forward about the battery voltage and I found this: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/how-choose-laptop-battery-king-sener/ "Voltage is closely related to the number of cells in the battery - typically a 10.8V battery has 6 cells and a 14.4V battery has 8 cells." https://superuser.com/questions/33207/laptop-battery-is-voltage-really-important-to-respect https://superuser.com/a/406492 "The first stage is adapter which is nearly 5 V higher than the battery rating voltage to charge it faster to the full. Now the second stage is the motherboard or processor which typically runs at 5 V and for that you have voltage regulator inside." Re: Re: Issue with USB External Keyboard, External Mouse, and Screen Brightness on Dell Laptop
Dear Debian community, Thank you for your insights. Unfortunately, the issue has worsened. Today, I observed that upon unplugging the power cable, within one or two seconds, the screen dims (brightness is set to zero), and both the external mouse and keyboard (USB) stop working. Even if I try to use the keyboard or mouse, they do not reactivate. Only the laptop's internal touchpad and keyboard continue to function. When I reconnect the power cable, both the external mouse and keyboard resume working automatically. However, I need to manually adjust the screen brightness. I have not installed the usbguard package. Could there be another underlying cause? Best regards, -- Marcelo
Issue with USB External Keyboard, External Mouse, and Screen Brightness on Dell Laptop
Dear Debian community, I am facing an issue with my Dell laptop, running Debian. After recently upgrade, my external keyboard and external mouse (both USB) stopped working after after the screen brightness automatically decreased. This has occurred a few times, and I can only solve it by rebooting the laptop. Furthermore, I have observed that the issue is also related to the behavior of screen brightness, which seems to decrease automatically. Disconnecting and reconnecting the devices does not solve the problem. Any guidance or suggestions would be welcome. I found related problem at the internet. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=291592 https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=291555 https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=291931 :~$ uname -a Linux marcelo 6.5.0-5-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.5.13-1 (2023-11-29) x86_64 GNU/Linux :~$ sudo dmesg | grep usb [1.112832] pci :00:1d.0: quirk_usb_early_handoff+0x0/0x7d0 took 17128 usecs [4.770474] usbcore: registered new interface driver usbfs [4.770517] usbcore: registered new interface driver hub [4.770612] usbcore: registered new device driver usb [5.028858] usb usb1: New USB device found, idVendor=1d6b, idProduct=0002, bcdDevice= 6.05 [5.028871] usb usb1: New USB device strings: Mfr=3, Product=2, SerialNumber=1 [5.028880] usb usb1: Product: EHCI Host Controller [5.028887] usb usb1: Manufacturer: Linux 6.5.0-5-amd64 ehci_hcd [5.028893] usb usb1: SerialNumber: :00:1d.0 [5.047937] usb usb2: New USB device found, idVendor=1d6b, idProduct=0002, bcdDevice= 6.05 [5.047951] usb usb2: New USB device strings: Mfr=3, Product=2, SerialNumber=1 [5.047960] usb usb2: Product: xHCI Host Controller [5.047967] usb usb2: Manufacturer: Linux 6.5.0-5-amd64 xhci-hcd [5.047974] usb usb2: SerialNumber: :00:14.0 [5.102086] usb usb3: New USB device found, idVendor=1d6b, idProduct=0003, bcdDevice= 6.05 [5.102107] usb usb3: New USB device strings: Mfr=3, Product=2, SerialNumber=1 [5.102116] usb usb3: Product: xHCI Host Controller [5.102123] usb usb3: Manufacturer: Linux 6.5.0-5-amd64 xhci-hcd [5.102131] usb usb3: SerialNumber: :00:14.0 [5.501707] usb 1-1: new high-speed USB device number 2 using ehci-pci [5.657069] usb 1-1: New USB device found, idVendor=8087, idProduct=8000, bcdDevice= 0.04 [5.657087] usb 1-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=0, Product=0, SerialNumber=0 [6.196709] usb 1-1.5: new full-speed USB device number 3 using ehci-pci [6.306732] usb 1-1.5: New USB device found, idVendor=8087, idProduct=0a2b, bcdDevice= 0.01 [6.306745] usb 1-1.5: New USB device strings: Mfr=0, Product=0, SerialNumber=0 [6.384712] usb 1-1.6: new full-speed USB device number 4 using ehci-pci [6.495352] usb 1-1.6: New USB device found, idVendor=04f3, idProduct=034f, bcdDevice=11.11 [6.495365] usb 1-1.6: New USB device strings: Mfr=4, Product=14, SerialNumber=0 [6.495371] usb 1-1.6: Product: Touchscreen [6.495375] usb 1-1.6: Manufacturer: ELAN [6.576712] usb 1-1.7: new high-speed USB device number 5 using ehci-pci [6.685553] usb 1-1.7: New USB device found, idVendor=0bda, idProduct=0129, bcdDevice=39.60 [6.685565] usb 1-1.7: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3 [6.685571] usb 1-1.7: Product: USB2.0-CRW [6.685575] usb 1-1.7: Manufacturer: Generic [6.685579] usb 1-1.7: SerialNumber: 2010020139600 [6.772707] usb 1-1.8: new high-speed USB device number 6 using ehci-pci [6.902694] usbcore: registered new interface driver usbhid [6.902708] usbhid: USB HID core driver [ 13.423833] usb 1-1.8: New USB device found, idVendor=0bda, idProduct=5754, bcdDevice=41.21 [ 13.423851] usb 1-1.8: New USB device strings: Mfr=3, Product=1, SerialNumber=2 [ 13.423862] usb 1-1.8: Product: Integrated_Webcam_HD [ 13.423870] usb 1-1.8: Manufacturer: CN06307G7248745OB3VRA00 [ 13.423876] usb 1-1.8: SerialNumber: 200901010001 [ 13.426904] usbcore: registered new interface driver rtsx_usb [ 57.988717] usb 2-2: new low-speed USB device number 2 using xhci_hcd [ 58.139680] usb 2-2: New USB device found, idVendor=275d, idProduct=0ba6, bcdDevice= 1.00 [ 58.139693] usb 2-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=0, Product=1, SerialNumber=0 [ 58.139699] usb 2-2: Product: USB OPTICAL MOUSE [ 58.143196] input: USB OPTICAL MOUSE as /devices/pci:00/:00:14.0/usb2/2-2/2-2:1.0/0003:275D:0BA6.0002/input/input11 [ 58.143433] hid-generic 0003:275D:0BA6.0002: input,hidraw1: USB HID v1.11 Mouse [USB OPTICAL MOUSE ] on usb-:00:14.0-2/input0 [ 58.744716] usb 1-1.3: new low-speed USB device number 7 using ehci-pci [ 58.858361] usb 1-1.3: New USB device found, idVendor=1a2c, idProduct=0e24, bcdDevice= 1.10 [ 58.858374] usb 1-1.3: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0 [ 58.858380] usb 1-1.3: Product: USB Keyboard [ 58.858384] usb 1-1.3

SSD Optimization - Crucial CT1000MX500SSD1
Hi, Recently, I bought a SSD SATA Crucial CT1000MX500SSD1. Nowadays, one week a go, debian testing system got crashed because partition got read only. I suspect this is a reason from some upgrade and I suspect that an SSD optimization can solve this problem. SSD firmware is up to date. This version is M3CR043. Here is some informations: :~$ sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda https://pastebin.com/Jyrhn1A2 :~$ sudo journalctl --since "2022-09-25 00:00:00" | grep sda https://pastebin.com/QtCqpJPm :~$ sudo journalctl --since "2022-09-25 00:00:00" | grep ata1 https://pastebin.com/x5QdaYQU :~$ sudo journalctl --since "2022-09-25 00:00:00" | grep error https://pastebin.com/1hEPm7YX Have you some clue and/or advise here? SSD Optimization and tweaks - Looking for tips/recomendations
Hi, I bought a SSD solid disk and will perform a fresh install on it. Debian testing. I've never used such a disc. I bought a Crucial CT1000MX500SSD1 (1TB 3D NAND Crucial SATA MX500 Internal SSD (with 9.5mm adapter) — 6.35cm (2.5in) and 7mm). I read the recommendations on the https://wiki.debian.org/SSDOptimization page. However, I still have some doubts: 1. Use ext4 or LVM partitioning? 2. I read in the Warnming section that some discs contain bugs, including Crucial. But I don't know if I need to use or not use "discard" on this disk (CT1000MX500SSD1). If I need to proceed with use "discard", would you please have any tips on how to do it? I didn't understand how to do this. 3. Should I reserve a swap partition or not? I always had one on hdd disks. I was in doubt, too. 4. Any other recommendations to improve the performance and lifespan of this disk? Thank you! -- Marcelo

I plan to continue use offlineimap + msmtp + mutt for a long time. GMail offers this, but, after OAuth2 implementation, token expires day by day. It's annoying. Thank you! -- Marcelo

> Find another mail host. Have you, or someone else, a suggestion for one alternative for Gmail? I have been used mutt + offlineimap + msmtp for a long years (before I have been used Sylpheed). Both, offlineimap and msmtp, can use OAUTH2. The problem remains that day by day the token expires and a new one is needed, and this process can be done by hand. Re: Re: Two graphics cards? Intel and AMD/ATI? What xserver-xorg-* I can uninstall?
Hi Felix and Greg, Thank you so much! Here is more information. I'm try to got 3 monitors in my debian bullseye. In this days/ weeks, months, I have googled a lot to find any rule to tell me how I could to put my third monitor to work. It is plugged in a DisplayLink FY USB-DVI in this manner: notebook usb3.0 port -> cable -> DisplayLink FY USB-DVI -> DVItoVGA Adapter -> VGA cable -> Monitor AOC 511vw I try this with the this instructions https://is.gd/Ijp1k1 and with the DisplyLink install script (https://git.io/JvADQ). Not success. So, I read in some place that can be a possible conflict with xorg module. To figure out the solution, I'm try to uninstall all unnecessary module. I'm in this point/step now. lsusb output: marcelo@marcelo:~$ lsusb Bus 001 Device 006: ID 0bda:5754 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0bda:0129 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Re: What is Firefox on Debian Stretch nearest future?
I had similar problems with firefox being slow, it was mostly restricted to some websites and it was related to how the rendering worked, very long pages with lots of visual elements tended to make the scroll extremely slow. Couple that with the fact that the content of the tabs could crash the main UI and the whole experience would be pretty bad. Why is libc updated every time there's an update to the kernel
I know that the kernel and libc are deeply integrated but I imagine that a security update to it doesn't actually change anything to libc source code, so why do the two of them always upgrade together?

Likely, since the libre to break a system temporarily sometimes is needed to fix issues, or to make transitions. We are humans, so something like "Once it suggested me to remove most of my system, including apt, I thought it was going to upgrade it so I confirmed it" happens from time to time. ... Is it that badly worded? No, but it's a mistake to enter "yes" after unconcentrated reading when you're root. 1. Unconcentrated reading might cause that you're thinking "upgrade" while it is a "remove". 2. Even if it's an upgrade, check what should be upgraded, before you upgrade. Perhaps the distro has got a homepage with news about latest upgrades. There's pathological dissociation, but also "normal" dissociation. It's human to be "unconcentrated". If a human e.g. drives each day the same way from home to work by car, then it often happens that this quasi is done "unknowingly"/"automated". You still will notice traffic lights etc., there's less risk by this "normal" dissociation, but if you do something administrative this "normality" is dangerous, that's why means of protection are needed. We should train to change our behaviour, when doing something administrative, IOW after giving the root password and we should make backups. Training this does work, but isn't perfect, so we still could make a mistake. Regarding my example, the situation happened 1 year ago, the same thing happened 2 years before that, it was the first time I tried using aptitude, because it seemed more user friendly, at that time, when aptitude suggested me to remove important packages I got scared and quit from the program thinking that it required a lot more expertise than I had. My impressions haven't changed since then, but, keeping on the topic, perhaps a reason to use aptitude is, as other users have mentioned, the relative easy access that it provides to more exotic package resolving solutions. Just to make it clear in my normal package management these are *all* commands that I use: # apt-get update # apt-get upgrade # apt-get dist-upgrade # apt-get install foo-bar # apt-get install -f # apt-get remove|purge foo-bar $ apt-cache search foo $ apt-cache policy foo-bar $ dpkg -L foo-bar I really don't remember a time that I needed anything more complex than any of the above commands. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". monitor turns off when external monitor not plugged
Hello, I have an Acer 771G notebook and when I installed debian wheezy, I had my external monitor plugged. Now, if I restart my computer with the external monitor plugged, gdm3 shows ok and I can use the computer normally. However, if I start the computer without the external monitor, the notebook monitor turns off until I plug the external one. I tried to turn the laptop the default monitor, but no success, when I restart the computer, same thing happens. Any hint on how to solve this? [OFF TOPIC] Set up a webserver
Hi, I would like to set up a webserver to our department at our University. I already have been installed Debian stable and select "web sever" when it asked me. So, no graphic desktop. Only Command Line and LAMP. This server will provide our subdomain (http://ourdepartment.ouruniversity.edu.br). This is easy to do: I will put all files in /var/www, setup MySQL, dump DB, ... What I have trouble is how I could set up a personal pages to our colleagues? I want to setup some thing like this: http://ourdepartment.ouruniversity.edu.br/~colleague1 and so on for all others ones. I could to that adding all colleagues in the server and they can be transfer their sites by sft (ssh) or ftp to her/his home directory. However, anyone of they have knowledge to self to do. I did a search on the web about Plesk/cPanel like softwares for linux and found this ones [0]. I ask you if you know one of they? One of they do what I want (my colleague could transfer and administrate her/his site from the web like above)? Have you any site/tutorial to suggest me? Thank you for point me out that Nvidia Forum post. In there, I found:
The trick it seems is to start both X servers as close in time as possible to one another.

To make it easier on myself, I have written two simple bash scripts that wait until the other script is running before they start the X servers. Re: Re: [SOLVED] Multseat don't work after xorg (and related) upgrade
Hi Steve, I do that in this way: $ cat /var/log/dpkg.log Here you will see all that changes you have been made and you could see the previous version of that packages. Select only that packages that are related to your problem Go to http://snapshot.debian.org and find the old versions and download they. Use, at your won risky, no warranty,: # dpkg -i package to downgrade. Downgrade is not supported by Debian team. I have need to use --force-depends to install some packages. GRUB2 doesn’t is installed on SATA HD
I have a MB with 2 SATAI/II and 1 IDE 100 port. I have installed 2 HDs, one IDE and one SATAII, and 1 SATA DVD rom. MB BIOS detect IDE Master (channel 1) and SATA HD master on channel 2 and DVD rom slave on channel 2, too. I do do a fresh instalation (Debian testing last week). When I choose to install grub-pc on SATA HD and click "Continue", installer tell me that I *don't" had choose any drive to install grub-pc! I try to install it on the first partition of SATA HD and got the same result. I choose install without grub-pc. The system is installed ok. However, when I reboot, bios tell me that there isn't a BOOT drive. No boot here. I boot with a livecd and do the steps to rescue grub. The process is ok and no errors is reported. I try to reboot from sata hd and bios tell me that no boot drive. I boot with Super GRUB2 Disk and tell it to "Detect any GRUB2 installation (even if mbr is overwritten)". My GRUB is found on (hd0,1) and I could load it and boot my system! So, now, for boot my system, I need the SG2D all time. I have installed the same system on IDE HD and all is fine! problem with ooffice from backports
Hi! I am running Lenny in a i386 machine. I have the following line in the sources.list file: deb http://www.backports.org/debian lenny-backports main contrib non-free After updating the package information, the openoffice.org-style-galaxy package appears in the following way in synaptic: openoffice.org-style-galaxy 1:3.2.0-4~bpo50+1 But the openoffice.org and openoffice.org-style-galaxy packages at backports are in version 1:3.1.1-15+squeeze1~bpo50+1, the same version is for the openoffice.org package in synaptic. This mismatch between the version of openoffice.org-style-galaxy in synaptic and in the backports site precludes me to install openoffice.org from backports. I commented the backports line in sources.list, updated the package information, uncommented again the line and updating the package information again, but the version of openoffice.org-style-galaxy package in synaptic remains the same wrong 1:3.2.0-4~bpo50+1. The situation is the following: package version synaptic backports.org openoffice.org1:3.1.1-15+squeeze1~bpo50+1 1:3.1.1-15+squeeze1~bpo50+1 openoffice.org-style-galaxy 1:3.2.0-4~bpo50+1 1:3.1.1-15+squeeze1~bpo50+1 How can I tell synaptic to updated the correct information regarding openoffice.org-style-galaxy version in order to match the one in the openoffice.org package? (the same problem with the style-oxygen package) Thanks in advance Marcelo
