Re: "Failed to start Create System Users" when booting Debian 10 rootfs from NFS mount.

2022-09-01 Thread mj

Hi,

A suggestion: we've had issues in the past, where on NFS root the issue
was that setting "Linux Capabilities" (setcap) fails, because NFS does
not support the extended attributes to store them.

Perhaps that is your issue as well?

mount, it reported error through serial port:

|[FAILED] Failed to start Create System Users. See 'systemctl status

And this is the only error message printed out. The board went all the
way to login inputI, but I could not login with any of
the preset accounts including root (because no users have been created

So how is the process "create system users" performed when Linux/Debian

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

and yes: the file snmptrapd.log is the exception, all other files (20,

Then, when starting rsyslog again, this time in debug mode ("rsyslogd

Re: rsyslog adding old entries again

2019-12-13 Thread mj

Hi Tomás,

Thanks for your reply! More details, ok :-)

The relevant rsyslog configuration belongs to packetfence.org, and is:

$ModLoad imuxsock # provides support for local system logging (e.g. via logger
command)
$ModLoad imjournal # provides access to the systemd journal
# Disable rate-limiting of syslog
$SystemLogRateLimitInterval 0
$SystemLogRateLimitBurst 0

# Disable rate-limiting of journal messages
$imjournalRatelimitInterval 0
$imjournalRatelimitBurst 0

# Disable escaping of control characters (like the ones used by Data::Dumper)
$EscapeControlCharactersOnReceive off

# define the user and group of the file created
$FileGroup pf

# Allow the pf group to read log files
$umask 0027

# fingerbank.log
if $syslogtag contains "fingerbank" then {
  -/usr/local/pf/logs/fingerbank.log
stop
}

# httpd.aaa.error
if $programname contains "httpd_aaa_err" then {
  -/usr/local/pf/logs/httpd.aaa.error
stop
}

# pfdhcp.log
if $programname == "pfdhcp" then {
  -/usr/local/pf/logs/pfdhcp.log
stop
}

(followed by many more similar lines)

And what I do:
- service rsyslog stop
- rm -f /usr/local/pf/logs/*
- ls /usr/local/pf/logs/ to confirm that it *is* empty
- service rsyslog start

and then all logfiles have reappeared (are regenerated?) in
/usr/local/pf/conf with timestamp NOW, filled with entries dating back
to dec 6.

This is debian 9.11. Any other info that is required.?

Thanks!

MJ

rsyslog adding old entries again

2019-12-13 Thread mj

Hi,

I'm sure this is a faq, but I cannot find the answer. :-(

On debian 9, rsyslog with some rules to log to certain specific files.

Now: when I:
- stop rsyslog
- delete those specific log files
- reboot my server

I would expect to find only *new* and *recent* log lines in those files.

However: old entries are appearing also, up to weeks ago. So it seems
rsyslog actually noticies that those entries are not in the files, and
adds them again.

I don't want that :-)

How is that behaviour configured, can I stop rsyslog from doing that? Or
is there an other way to empty these log files, and start again from
scratch, with only new entries?

Again: really seems like a FAQ, but I can't find it...

Re: sucessor for denyhosts?

2019-03-09 Thread mj

Hi,

We are using fail2ban to do this. It offers many more options, and works
by creating iptables rules. This gives you much more control over what
ports exactly are blocked.

Plus I think (correct me if Im wrong) that using /etc/hosts.deny to
block access only works with programs that are compiled to do so, and
iptables will always work.

Hi folks,

The blocked IP is added into /etc/hosts.deny, which IMO is a great idea.

I am using a script, which, cleares the hosts.deny after a certain time, but
this is just my behaviour.

My question: which successor for denyhost do you suggest. I found sshguard,
which looks promising, but maybe you got a better tool, which is similar to
denyhosts.

Happy hacking!

lpic certification courses

2018-11-28 Thread mj

Hi all,

So I decided to LPIC certify myself, and after some googling, I ended up
doing the ucertify courses, purchased via lpimarketplace.

I started the first (mandatory) LPIC course "Linux Essentials", but
immediately became a bit frustrated with the ucertify training, and
would like to ask here for alternative course recommendations, if any.

Reason of my frustration are questions/answers like this:
Q: "Please name the other user interface, besides the command line,
which requires more system resources".

My (free text) answer: "GUI".

Wrong. No abbreviations. Ok, then the same question came up again, this
time I answered: "graphical user interface". Wrong again! Correct answer
being: "Graphical User Interface". :-(

Another example: A question on determining the ip/mac/broadcast of an
nic, I used the "ip" command. Also wrong, as they preferred "ifconfig".

Ok, so now I have to either spend time learing the commands and spelling
they prefer to see, or find better online courses.

I guess many have have taken the LPIC examinations... Are their exams as
strict as ucertify, counting for example capitalisation wrong?

Any tips for other good online lpic prep courses..?

Re: mariadb ldap auth

Hi Selim,

Wow thanks for teaching me about apt-file, didn't know that one!

For me, on linux mint, output looks different:

user@e7470 ~ $ sudo apt-file search dialog.so

...> percona-server-5.6-dbg: /usr/lib/debug/usr/lib/mysql/plugin/dialog.so

percona-server-server-5.6: /usr/lib/mysql/plugin/dialog.so
percona-xtradb-cluster-5.6-dbg: /usr/lib/debug/usr/lib/mysql/plugin/dialog.so
percona-xtradb-cluster-server-5.6: /usr/lib/mysql/plugin/dialog.so

...
user@e7470 ~ $ cat /etc/debian_version
stretch/sid

Seems linux mint doesn't have those mariadb client libs that you have.
Strange, since it's also stretch...?

If you don't have those two packages installed on your remote client,
try to install them. (You probably only need the client one, but I
don't really know.)

Yeah I'll work on this a bit more.

If they're already installed, you should try to figure out why your
system is trying to find the mysql version of the plugin, but as a
temporary solution, you can try to create a symlink from
/usr/lib/mysql/plugin/dialog.so to one of those files and see if it works.

Yes, thanks for your suggestions, and for telling me about apt-file :-)

mariadb ldap auth

2018-09-06 Thread mj

Hi,

I have installed mariadb and configured pam authentication, and
configured a mysql pam module like this:

/etc/pam.d/mysql
auth required pam_winbind.so
account required pam_winbind.so

which basically gives my samba winbind users access to mysql with their
windows credentials:

root@mysqlserver:~# mysql -udomain_username -p
Enter password:
Welcome to the MariaDB monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MariaDB connection id is 6
Server version: 10.1.26-MariaDB-0+deb9u1 Debian 9.1

Copyright (c) 2000, 2017, Oracle, MariaDB Corporation Ab and others.

Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the current input statement.

MariaDB [(none)]>

So I was happy.

But this seems to work only from the localhost mariadb is running on.
Trying this from a remote mysql client gives:

user@e7470 ~ $ mysql -udomain_user -p -h mysqlserver.full.address
Enter password:
ERROR 2059 (HY000): Authentication plugin 'dialog' cannot be loaded: /usr/lib/mysql/plugin/dialog.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

and searching for /usr/lib/mysql/plugin/dialog.so gives no results:

user@e7470 ~ $ dpkg --search /usr/lib/mysql/plugin/dialog.so
dpkg-query: no path found matching pattern /usr/lib/mysql/plugin/dialog.so
user@e7470 ~ $

Anyone here with a good suggestion how to achieve this from a remote
mysql client?

iptables geoip not working after update to jessie

Hi,

Yesterday I upgraded a server from wheezy to jessie. Went fine, with one

root@jessie:~# iptables -A INPUT -m geoip --src-cc RU -j DROP
iptables: No chain/target/match by that name.

This machine was originaly wheezy, and at that time, I installed the geo

and

cd /tmp/geoip
/usr/lib/xtables-addons/xt_geoip_dl
mkdir /usr/share/xt_geoip
/usr/lib/xtables-addons/xt_geoip_build -D /usr/share/xt_geoip *.csv

This worked in wheezy, but alas after the upgrade it stopped. :-(

Iptables still seems to know about geoip, because "iptables -m geoip
--help" still lists the geoip match options:

geoip match options:
[!] --src-cc, --source-country country[,country...]
Match packet coming from (one of) the specified country(ies)
[!] --dst-cc, --destination-country country[,country...]
Match packet going to (one of) the specified country(ies)

NOTE: The country is inputed by its ISO3166 code.

As I really need to block some countries, I would very much appreciate
any assistance here.

This post describes exactly my issue:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=195565

root@jessie:~# modprobe xt_geoip
modprobe: FATAL: Module xt_geoip not found.

But the fix from the post (depmod -a) doesn't help us at all. No output,
no difference.

Could someone help me out?

Best regards,
MJ

change to postfix from backports

2017-08-11 Thread mj

Hi,

Quick question: I have a wheezy system (yes, we will upgrade) that needs
a more recent postfix. Postfix 2.11 is in backports, and I would like to
upgrade to that.

We are using dovecot from the regular repo, and posfix authenticated to
dovecot via sasl.

Is it safe to upgrade from standard wheezy postfix to the one from
backports? Will sasl (normally) still work as it does now?

Best regards,
MJ

Re: first stretch vm in proxmox

Hi,

Nevermind. I changed mac address, received a different ip, and things
started working.

Still don't understand why during install the network worked? I'd expect
the system to have received the same ip during install and after the
first reboot.

Also don't understand why that particular non-working ip could not even
ping the default gateway. (the default gateway is also the dhcp server
that also provided the ip in the first place...)

Anyway. :-)

I don't think so. The DFSG dates from 1997. The Free Software
Definition only got that name around 2001. Back in 1998, there were
only three freedoms... see
http://web.archive.org/web/19980126185518/http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html

Think of them as two parallel developments for similar concepts -
one is a definition, the other is a set of guidelines to follow.
Like http://people.debian.org/~bap/dfsg-faq#four_freedoms says:

"[the FSF's four freedoms] are the Free Software Foundation's
articulation of what it believes all software users deserve. (Note
that full exercise of Freedoms 1 and 3 requires access to the
source code.) They are elegantly phrased, and arguably an
improvement in some ways on the earlier DFSG. However they refer
to exactly the same set of freedoms as the DFSG. If a license is
inconsistent with the FSF's four freedoms, you can be sure that
Debian will also consider it non-free."

Hope that explains,

I hope someone can reply to the Korean one because I'm not sure I
understand the English version.

But to try to answer the question:

Debian GNU/Linux comes under a licence which permits commercial use.
It can be downloaded from the internet, or a copy of the official
DVD bought from many places http://www.debian.org/CD/vendors/

Hope that helps,

Yes. Just printing an announcement like that would be a bug in two
ways: scripts couldn't parse it and it doesn't explain why Firefox
isn't there (MozCorp's copyright+trademark pincer tactic).

At present, it says:

The following extra packages will be installed:
iceweasel

I've suggested that iceweasel provides+conflicts+replaces firefox,
which AFAICT would instead produce the output:

Note, selecting iceweasel instead of firefox
[...other stuff about packages...]
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]

Would that be better, in your opinion?

I don't know if it's possible. I think that would require ftpmaster
assistance (because it makes firefox a virtual package as I understand
it and the previous firefox*deb files may need to be deleted), it may
make other tools say even more inaccurate things about the
firefox-iceweasel relationship and I don't know whether it would give
a smooth upgrade like the near-empty transition package. (From
http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2006/12/msg00111.html )

XFree86 and USB Mouse & Keyboard ---> Frustrating!

2004-11-18 Thread mj-barton

In the root I run:
"dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86"

It prompts me with the instructions about drivers, resolution, and refresh rates.  I enter in the correct responses. Then it comes to the mouse.

Reference (both USB):
Microsoft USB Mouse:
Product URL: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=26-  105-123&depa=0
Microsoft Office Keyboard:
Product URL: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B6D2LG/104-7385884-3858344

I am prompted with these options:
/dev/psaux

/dev/ttys0

/dev/ttys1

/dev/ttys2

/dev/ttys3

/dev/input/mice

/dev/atibm
/dev/sunmouse
/dev/gpmdata

I select "/dev/psaux".
In the next prompt I select "ImPS/2".
Then I select "no" to "Emulating 3 buttons"
Then I select "yes" to Scrolling Events (scroller).

I will then finish the configuration everything is written into the XF86Config-4.

I then type "startx".

It the screen goes weird then the kde loader window appears.  When the system tries to initials the component referred to with keyboard & mouse icon.  This is periphials.  It stops and returns me to the commandline and says "Caught signal 11, connection lost".  I believe the USB keyboard and USB mouse are configured wrong.  However, I do NOT know how to properly configure them.  Can please get some help.

Thank You

Aside: I have the log file available however to prevent wasting people's bandwidth I chose not to attach it.  Let me know and I will include it in a reply.

In the installation for Debian "Woody" it recommended that you use bf2.4 if you have a usb keyboard and mouse.  This fits my hardware configuration perfectly.  My question is this:

I downloaded US Disc #1.  Is this the right disc to use bf2.4 installation method?  If so what do I do?  If not, what is the appropriate disc to get?

Try moving your current profile directory out of the way, or try another user who has
never used Moz before. Does it work? If so, you know the problem is in your profile.
If not, I'd google for "mozilla bus error".

Hi Kent:

First, sorry about the lack of line feeds. I use this account to
cut down the s p am problem and I can't set the line length ;(

Further info:
I removed the profile at each step, forcing mozilla to make a new
profile each time. That didn't help.

I also made a new user account and mozilla failed there too with the
same error.

I just installed the latest unstable firefox and it runs perfectly,
so I know that something is happening in the system wide mozilla
config--I just don't know what :(

The only thing I found on Google was something about ulimit, which is
currently set at "unlimited", and is kind of over my head anyway :(

I also purged mozilla and all it's related stuff, installed testing
mozilla-browser with same error results.

Next I did a second unstable install of mozilla-browser just for kicks,
always ends with "Bus error" when I try to launch it.

Still, it just seems odd that mozilla 1.7 ran the first few times
perfectly befor it started to botch for unknown reasons. Also, Mozilla
is the only thing that I upgraded, and apt had no problems with it at
all.

Hopefully someone will recognize the error and point me in the right
direction.

Thanks so much!

regards, Jaye

php web+apache recommendations

2004-03-17 Thread MJ Inabnit
Hello list:

I was going to instal php-nuke until I found the debian-legal thread regarding the
licensing problems.. What I hope to do is find a package based on php that uses
modules (rss, calendar, bb, etc). I am no webmaster, but I want to learn enough to
get a good site up and running for our LUG. The goal is a clean front page with a
small amount of rss feed and links to our content that is easy to keep updated. I
also have examined the phpbb for forums, and it's already available and I plan to use
it also. What I need to know is what else I need to install to get a off-line site
up, then transfered over to our actual server.

Is there a tasksel for this type of package, ready made?

Thank you.

headless firewall application recommendation

I am looking for recommendations for firewall/router software for

rules cause me to stagger in my chair, so I am looking for a package

anti-virus software for Gnu/Linux

So what is the opinion now-a-days? I just read a post last week where a new Gnu/Linux

apt upgrade stops with "foomatic-filters (3.0.0-20031207-1)"

2004-01-08 Thread MJ Inabnit
I did an update and dist-upgrade today (8Jan04) and all went well (as I expected it
to) until I got to "foomatic-filters (3.0.0-20031207-1)".
Xterm snip
After unpacking 0B of additional disk space will be used.
Setting up foomatic-filters (3.0.0-20031207-1) ...
Configuration file `/etc/foomatic/filter.conf'
==> File on system created by you or by a script.
==> File also in package provided by package maintainer.
What would you like to do about it ? Your options are:
Y or I : install the package maintainer's version
N or O : keep your currently-installed version
D : show the differences between the versions
Z : start a new shell to examine the situation
The default action is to keep your current version.
*** filter.conf (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [default=N] ?y

Here is where the system just "hangs out" for lack of a better descriptor. The
terminal is okay but the script is just sitting here. Several hours have passed and
it's still just sitting there--no errors--just sitting there doing nothing at all!
I've killed it several times and restarted, but it always does the same thing.

How do I get this script to finish?

Thank you.

You need to be root (or you can specify the full path for
the command, but it won't necessarily help you if you need
root permissions to read things anyway). Su to root, or
log in as root, and then run lspci and dpkg-reconfigure
and things will go as clockwork. Which means they'll go
well. :-)

RE: Problem with video card when installing debian Gnu/Linux.

2003-08-18 Thread Johansson Mikael (mj)
Hello!
Thank you very much for responding on my question Kent.
Maybe I have to try Unstable/sid like you said but before
that I thought of trying your hint while my feet are dry.
What does it mean to run "lspci"? I tried to do it in the
version of Debian I have installed, without any X-Window,
from the prompt but only got an error message that the command
isn't known. Same thing with dpkg-reconfigure. Is it while
installing this should be done. Sorry for my ignorance.
The exact name of my video card is S3 ProSavage 8.
I have not tried working with the partition problem yet as I
want to resolve my probelm with the hardware first but I will
report back to you when I do.

Kind Regards
/Mikael

Ah, you've just run into the single biggest flaw in Debian. It can be
tough to install and set up hardware. But once you've got it going,
Debian is "da bomb"; it's great.

I'm assuming you have installed Stable/Woody. I've had better luck with
hardware "detection" using Unstable/Sid, because it has newer versions
of such things as the X Window System, which tends to do a
better job of
finding video cards. (I'm assuming you're looking for X video drivers.)
However, you may want to stick with Stable until you get your feet wet
(or if this is a server that needs to be rock stable, but then you
probably wouldn't be _needing_ X on there).

Your best bet would be to run "lspci" and post the
video-related part to
this list. The chipset is more important than the name on the video
card, and lspci will hopefully report this info. Then run
"dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" and at one point you'll be asked
which driver to use. Hopefully the correct driver for your chipset will
be listed. If not, that's beyond me, but re-post at that time with what
you've learned and perhaps others on this list can help out.

>2. I want to set up my computer to run both Linux and Windows.
>Is this possible?
>

Absolutely. There's lots of documentation out there for that, but the
short answer is to install Windows first, making sure to leave enough
space free on your hard drive during the partitioning phase (method
depends on version of Windows) for your Linux partitions. Then install
Linux. Then tinker with /etc/lilo.conf and re-run lilo (assuming you're
using the "default" of lilo, and not grub or something else). Then
reboot and there you go. Of course there are other ways to do it, like
if you've already got Windows taking up the entire drive, you can use
something like Partition Magic, or fips if the drive is FAT (not NTFS),
to resize the partition, etc.

This will allow you to choose to boot into Linux or Windows at boot
time. If you want to run Windows within Linux (or vice-versa), that can
be accomplished to, but with more headache and (recommended) more cost
(recommended because VMWare is the route you want to go, although you
could try plex/bochs - I forget today's name for the app, or even other
routes).

Problem with video card when installing debian Gnu/Linux.

2003-08-14 Thread Johansson Mikael (mj)
Hello.

Hardware:
AMD Athlon processor 1,2 GHz, 256 MB RAM, 30 GB HD
Video Card Pro Savage

1. When trying to install Debian Gnu/Linux the video card is
not recognized by the installation program. I am asked to
install drivers for it. How is this done? When using Win 2000
the cd following the motherboard can be executed automatically.

Even if I find Linux-drivers for this video-card I dont know
how to install them properly using debian Gnu/Linux. What is
the general way of installing hardware in debian. Is there a
special program in the OS that does this and all I have to do
is place the proper driver in the proper place.

2. I want to set up my computer to run both Linux and Windows.
Is this possible?

Every hint is welcome!

Thank you in advance.

Mikael

Excessive Ethernet Collisions (2.0.34 + tulip)

1999-06-04 Thread MJ Watson
We're using DEC Celebris GL6200 with 21143 tulip cards, and the
only version of the driver that seems to work is v0.91 from the
NASA website. This is also true on my 2.1 installation, which
is not having quite as substantial a problem, but then it isn't
running exactly the same suite of daemons (etc.)

Does any happen to see anything in this list of active processes
that might be causing so many collsions? The activity is very
sporadic, but there do seem to be an awful lot of them (ifconfig

looking for correct 'insmod de4x5' args

1999-04-13 Thread MJ Watson
Been working a while on getting a DEC 21142 card up on a 2.0 install
but apparently haven't hit on the right parms. The system is a DEC
Celebris 6200, Intel 233.

The network is 10Mb, half-duplex. Attempts have included:

insmod de4x5
insmod de4x5 args='eth0:autosense=10Mb' (also tried TP, what the heck)
insmod de4x5 args='eth0:autosense=10Mb dec_only=1'

Also, what would the parm be for debugging?

Thanks,
Michael

There is only one card, displaying the info through DOS MSD command
shows a subset of info for the VESA stuff, which I have no idea if
it's used or not.

The card is supported, my question is what X servers will both the
card and the monitor support, or am I stuck with VGA16 for my server?

Startup of X fails

1998-10-16 Thread MJ Watson
After installing 2.0 clean onto my PC, attempts to start up any
window manager fails, as does just trying to start an xterm.

This output is from an attempt to start up fvwm2:

Any suggestions? XF86Setup seems to go OK, though it may have been done as
root, but I'm trying to start my windows as under my userid. I'm not trying
to run xdm, just doing a startx.

Thanks,
Michael

2.0 X still won't work

1998-10-09 Thread MJ Watson
After installing Debian 2.0 onto a clean system, X11 will not run.
XF86Setup seems to go fine, my mouse appears to be configured properly,
and all the software seems to be correctly installed. Of course, if
something is missing, it wouldn't be obvious to me, either. Executing
startx results in the getting-very-familiar error:

_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 2

However, the error number changes to 111 when my $DISPLAY variable
is changed from unix:0 to :0. Localhost:0 was also tried. This is a
standalone system, though it does call the ISP using ppp. My localhost
shows up in netstat -r output, and looks like my ISP's, which is also 2.0.
The default manager is fvwm2, pretty much at random, though twm was
substituted once with no change. Anybody can run X11, and most of my
efforts have been run from my non-root userid.

.xinitrc and .xsession are pretty much by the documentation, but they're
not available to copy here.

Presumably the problem is something simple, but since X11 is not
something I've worked with much, it's not obvious to me.

Suggestions, please?

Thanks,
Michael

Getting Netscape Running

1998-09-23 Thread MJ Watson
Having just installed 2.0 at home, my next project is to
get Netscape up and running. I'm assuming that some form
of Xwindowing is required. If so, startx blows off with
numerous errors (sorry, I'm not at home, so don't have
the errors at hadn: Basically, xinitrc can't be found,
and a series of "can't connect" errors occur).

Also, in looking at Netscape's ftp site, there is more
than one version for linux: mklinux, linux20_glibc2, linux12.
Is there a FAQ anywhere for how to choose and build Netscape?

Thanks,
Michael <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
