But could it be the a nice feature for apt to have a list apart on the upgrading (I would say then 'replacing') of such cases? User can be alerted more easily during apt upgrade that some packages with a same version could be replaced by the Debian archive ones. apt list --replaceable apt upgrade --no-replaceable :-) Note that it could be replacement from configured alternative source archives. question about apt upgrade facing locally build packages
Hi, On Sid, building and installing locally modified packages for testing at the same version as in the archive, I am surprised that apt upgrade will reinstall any of those installed by the one from the archive. I did not remember such a "feature" in the past, unless my memory plays tricks on me:-). Moreover, this is done without notifying "such dangerous case" to the user but just like usual upgrading. It could be interesting to alert on such upgrades if this was expected for security reasons (ie. not matching some signature of the official package). When there are many packages to upgrade it is difficult to see such cases in the list and may lose the one locally installed. why some -dev packages depend on pkgconf and not others?
Hi, For instance, libfontconfig-dev depends on pkgconf. It makes me hesitate to add a(n explicit) dependency on pkgconf in the control file of a packaging that depends libfontconfig-dev. but not on pkgconf. It seems to require the pkg-config command regarding the folllowing extract of its .build file: -- Found PkgConfig: /usr/bin/pkg-config (found version "1.8.1") -- Checking for module 'libzstd' -- Found libzstd, version 1.5.6 -- Checking for module 'sdl2' -- Found sdl2, version 2.30.8 -- Checking for module 'freetype2' -- Found freetype2, version 26.2.20 -- Checking for module 'fluidsynth>=2.1.0' -- Found fluidsynth, version 2.3.6 That is not clear to me why certain -dev depends on pkconf whereas (a lot of) others with a .pc file don't. Re: question related to cp (-p) and /tmp
On the other hand, after modifying /etc/xattr.conf to replace: system.nfs4_aclpermissions by: system.nfs4_aclskip then test.sh works nicely: $ ./test.sh -rwxr-x--- 1 patrice patrice 300 Jul 9 10:46 ./test.sh option: -p exitcode: 0 -rwxr-x--- 1 patrice patrice 300 Jul 9 10:46 /tmp/test.sh option: --preserve=mode exitcode: 0 -rwxr-x--- 1 patrice patrice 300 Jul 10 08:32 /tmp/test.sh option: --preserve=timestamps exitcode: 0 -rwxr-x--- 1 patrice patrice 300 Jul 9 10:46 /tmp/test.sh option: --preserve=ownership exitcode: 0 -rwxr-x--- 1 patrice patrice 300 Jul 10 08:32 /tmp/test.sh Is there a risk to leave /etc/xattr.conf like this? This file also has a line regarding 'system.nfs4acl'. Is this for any compatibility? If I am right, this file is provided by libattr1 package and its content is from upstream: https://git.savannah.nongnu.org/cgit/attr.git/tree/xattr.conf Le mar. 9 juil. 2024 à 21:33, Thomas Schmitt a écrit : > > Hi, > > (I Cc: patrice.dur...@gmail.com because i see no "LDOSUBSCRIBER" in > the "X-Spam-Status:" header.) > > Jumping ahead: > > Look into the local file > > /etc/xattr.conf > > and try what happens if you change > > system.nfs4_acl permissions > > to > > system.nfs4_acl skip > > or if you newly insert thie "skip" line if no "system.nfs4_acl" is to see. > > -- > How i came to that proposal: > > Patrice Duroux wrote: > > $ LANG=C strace cp -p test.sh /tmp > > strace is a very good idea. > > > > flistxattr(4, NULL, 0) = 16 > > flistxattr(4, "system.nfs4_acl\0", 16) = 16 > > Somehow your file has an extended file attribute "system.nfs4_acl". > Inquire by: > > getfattr -d test.sh > > (I dimly remember that one needs superuser authority to read "system." > attributes. I don't really know how xattr works, but > it looks like it's trying to set an attribute named "system.nfs4_acl" > on a file that's in the /tmp directory. That is more clear to me now. And so I can confirm that copying to other destination that is a local disk device gives me the same message and exitcode: $ LANG=C cp -p test.sh /home2/patrice/ ; echo $? cp: preserving permissions for '/home2/patrice/test.sh': Operation not supported 1 $ mount | grep home2 /dev/sdb7 on /home2 type ext4 (rw,relatime,stripe=32751) I should have tested this also. > I can't tell whether this is a bug in cp, or a bug in the kernel. > Someone who understands xattr might be better able to help. Just for the story, the current kernel on this system is: $ uname -srvmo Linux 6.9.8-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.9.8-1 (2024-07-07) x86_64 GNU/Linux so probably it should be reboot at some point and switch for instance to linux-image-6.9.8-amd64 that is already installed. Many thanks to all!

about 64bits time_t transition and deborphan
Hi, Out of curiosity, I started this transition on some packages from experimental and I observed that deborphan is not without «disruption». Indeed, the added suffix t64 to their name means that the updated libraries are listed by deborphan even if they are required by other packages. I suspect that deborphan did not take into account the Provides: field. Is this something to be reported to deborphan as it could also be in some other cases than this time_t transition? or wait and see... ;-) Regards, Patrice
trouble with VPN deactivation
Hi, I am using a Debian Sid system with the GNOME desktop related packages from experimental (GNOME 44). And: $ id uid=1001(patrice) gid=1001(patrice) groupes=1001(patrice),4(adm),24(cdrom),25(floppy),27(sudo),29(audio),30(dip),44(video),46(plugdev),109(netdev),113(bluetooth),117(scanner),135(sbuild),1000(lpadmin) Activating a VPN configuration is working nicely. a two cent suggestion
Dear Debian people, Already possible or not, I would like to have a Debian system for which packages can be installed either by a specific user (root/sysadmin as usual) only or by any other (or a group of) users. But this would also depend on the class of the requested packages: 1. packages providing mainly commands or library facility (large majority packages?), 2. packages providing modifying system runtime like (root) services, new kernel modules, ... (very few packages?). Any (or a specific group of) users could be able to install any package of the first class by their own without asking a sysadmin (or explicitly acquiring privilege of) user. With this goal (dream?) in mind, I tried to cluster all the packages between the one that wouldn't change the system runtime (and therefore even after a reboot) and whatever would be the sign of that. Those package installation should insure a sort of system default runtime reproducibility in fact. If needed in the future, any build process could help to class/tag a package regarding this purpose (as it could also read any debian/* packaging file). Finally the best would be for apt to handle such a scenario, allowing those users to run the apt command which may fail or not regarding each package class. To cluster packages, my first material is to look at the file contents of a package (having content related to sbin or a systemd service or init.d or ...) Opinions or ideas are welcome. Could this clustering by it-self be interesting fin any case (for Debian QA, metrics...)? Regards, Patrice

Hi, I have done a little change to its content but then I realized that it is written that the list is generated from: https://salsa.debian.org/nodiscc2-guest/awesome-linuxaudio I think that it should be: https://salsa.debian.org/nodiscc/awesome-linuxaudio But the page shows currently a certain distance from the git content. So is this still true and do my remark the reason explain this distance? Thanks, Patrice

how to check compatibility of (any party) package file? (and more)
Hi, My purpose is multiple here. First, I am trying to build a tool[1] to check a given package file (ie a .deb, whatever its origin) for the compatibility with Debian distribution versions, including if it may be required to have more sections (contrib, non-free) or a backports pool. I am able to extract some field values (package, version, architecture, depends) and check the compatibility of some of the values with my current host system (using . deb-dpkg and dpkg). I am currently stuck to check the depends value. Is there any facility for this: 1. on my local system (using some commands)? 2. on all the Debian systems (using rmadison or some ad-hock UDD queries)? Check the value as a whole or iterate all its elements, deal with the version constraint, etc.. Second, would it be useful to maintain a website (database + webui) where to identify those package files not part of a known (Debian or famous 3rd) repository. I am thinking of this for a better / improved deb-get[2] project and a robot to maintain the database content. Third, expose the first tool as a webservice where to post a .deb file and get all the Debian distribution versions it is compatible with? Or maybe get the corresponding apt source configuration required (ie. the context) required to be able to install the package? Is piuparts able to determine or setup an adequate Debian container such to install a given package? Thanks, Patrice [1] as simple as a shell script if possible [2] https://github.com/wimpysworld/deb-get

adding trouble on the trouble (using apt upgrade)
Hi, Since some versions ago, apt/dpkg(?) is stopping its process (upgrade here) whatever the packaging trouble it is facing. But in some cases, it may leave the system more broken than it would become just by 'skipping' the troubling package. For instance, in the upgrading transaction list were some ldap related packages that were left not working, mainly the sudo-ldap in my case was not functional before completing the process by 'apt -f install' or 'dpkg --configure --pending'. But for that I normally use sudo. By chance I can use 'su -' ;-) I suspect that I am not the only one to face such a situation. Is it something expected with new dpkg versions? Or is this already the subject of a bug report or have to be reported to dpkg? Regards, Patrice [...] Dépaquetage de xserver-xorg-input-wacom (1.0.0-1) sur (0.34.99.1-1+b1) ... for info: Sid ssh 8.8p1 may break some Java client like Rundeck
Hi, After upgrading the openssh-server to 8.8p1 has broken a client instance of Rundeck (3.4.4) that runs some SSH commands. Downgrading to 8.7p1 using Debian Snapshots solved this. Don't know if there is a «better» way to notify users about this. Thanks! Patrice

Re: Re: GNOME Evolution cannot lock /var/spool/mail/
Hello, That more or less exactly the same on my side. I should have wrote /var/mail/ in fact. (The old bug affected me too much! :-D) And it is just to read all the emails (root) aliased to my user. Just in case that that a package version as introduce some change to the following: patrice@kos-moceratops ~> ls -l /usr/libexec/camel-lock-helper-1.2 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 22784 14 janv. 13:15 /usr/libexec/camel-lock-helper-1.2 (no setuid, etc.) Thanks!
GNOME Evolution cannot lock /var/spool/mail/
Hi, I use Sid but this problem came back to me a while ago now. Searching the internet for a solution, I dug around and ended up in the following: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution-data-server/+bug/640705 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=107881 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=598502 I just put the first issue at Ubuntu launchpad because I wrote it and I forgot that!! :-D The 2 last reports are archived so not very «accessible». What is going on? (unsupported?) Do I have to create a new one? Thanks, Patrice

obsolete content in 'Debian NEW and BYHAND Packages'?
Hi, I am curious about the reason to see cockpit listed here: https://ftp-master.debian.org/new.html whereas cockpit currently is 257 in Sid: https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/cockpit Is this a bug? Are there other cases like this? Not sure where to report if there is something to do about this. Thanks, Patrice
Re: trouble with debconf
I have finally found the source of this trouble. The absence of /var/lib/cdebconf directory after a bad manipulation. And then even trying to reinstall the debconf package did not (re)create this folder, so any package that rdepends to debconf is falling and also debconf it- self. Which package should I have reinstall to get it back?
Re: Re: is the number of dot files a measure of the darkness of Linux?:-D
Hi, Thank you, David, for all the information. Scanning all these DOT files and checking what sort of documentation user/admin can easily get for them are steps in my process. I already started checking about the .SEQ file you cited for instance. Debian Code Search is very helpful. On the other side 'man -K' is not the best and a too naïve solution: it takes a lot of ressources and I did not figure out how to have just the list of pages and not display them. Is there a service similar to Code Search but for man pages? Best, Patrice

is the number of dot files a measure of the darkness of Linux?:-D
Hi, 1. I was wondering about the presence of the /etc/.pwd.lock file on my system. For sure 'apt-file search /etc/.pwd.lock' is no help, but 'man -K .pwd.lock' do. I also searched the Debian user mailing list and found some relevant discussion on this file. Querying the Debian Code Search was also very interesting. Could there be a Debian web page to handle some sort of global search? I think this could be useful also for beginner not familiar with the diversity of Debian services, no? It will be for instance client to Debian Packages Search, Debian Manpages and Code Search, (also Debian Wiki?) that would provide at least links if topics are found in each of them. May be user would be able to select their targets. 2. After this I was curious about the overall content of all the packages on any dot files (including directories). For that I used the following to 2 commands: # the packages concerned apt-file --filter-origins Debian --regex search '/\.' | cut -d ':' -f 1 | uniq -c | sort -h # the top 10 of dot files apt-file --filter-origins Debian --regex search '/\.' | cut -d ':' -f 2 | grep -o '/\..*' | sort | uniq -c | sort -rh | head -10 They are very diverse and include some .git* ones. Are they always useful to provide? Is this something related to the Debian Policy? tracked by Debian Maintainer and/or in the scope of some QA tools? My opinion (as a sysadmin) is that I am not a big fan of dot files and moreover when they are not intended to be reserved (better restricted?) to the userland. Cheers, Patrice

trouble with sbuild
Hi, I am trying to quit pbuilder/cowbuilder to work on packaging and so use sbuild directly. Currently it is the version 0.81.2 on a Sid system. If I understand well, it is a Perl script that tries to execute some 'newuidmap' command that is part of the uidmap package and is not currently installed, neither present in the sbuild depends. I am trying to follow /u/s/d/sbuild/README.Debian that does not mention anything on this. What did I miss? Thanks
about a post at debian-python
Hi, Sorry if I polluted the debian-python mailing list about my following investigations: https://lists.debian.org/debian-python/2021/03/msg00053.html https://lists.debian.org/debian-python/2021/03/msg00054.html I was not convinced to start by opening an issue starting at snakemake, so I posted to debian-python. I was probably wrong looking at the different package maintainers involved: snakemake - Debian Med Packaging Team < debian-med-packag...@lists.alioth.debian.org> depends: python3-pulp - Debian OpenStack depends: coinor-cbc - Debian Science Maintainers < debian-science-maintain...@alioth-lists.debian.net> and also: glpk-utils - Debian Science Team < debian-science-maintain...@lists.alioth.debian.org> At the point where I got to, should I report a bug to python3-pulp? Many thanks, Patrice
Re: systemd (241-7~deb10u5) + tomcat9 (9.0.39-1~bpo10+1) + override.conf on a Buster 10.7
Hi, Finally got it after simply applying the commands: umount /srv/scratch mount /srv/scratch without having changed anything regarding NFS or whatever, pure (systemd?) magic! Patrice
systemd (241-7~deb10u5) + tomcat9 (9.0.39-1~bpo10+1) + override.conf on a Buster 10.7
Hi, Before turning mad, any help would be welcome! On a Buster system, I have created a /etc/systemd/system/tomcat9.service.d/override.conf file to set a value for ReadWritePaths. Using a value such as /home or /src/backup/shared, tomcat9 is starting fine and using /src/scratch/shared it does not (see the error messages below). Here are the commands to check each case: systemctl daemon-reload systemctl restart tomcat9 Here are the 'ls' outputs: $ ls -ld /home /srv/backup /srv/backup/shared /srv/scratch /srv/scratch/shared drwxr-xr-x 32 root root 4096 déc. 10 14:32 /home drwxr-xr-x 9 root root 136 déc. 8 22:53 /srv/backup drwxr-xr-x 13 ligmdb ligmusers 240 juin 28 16:51 /srv/backup/shared drwxr-xr-x 5 root root66 oct. 22 13:28 /srv/scratch drwxr-xr-x 10 ligmdb ligmusers 173 juin 28 16:51 /srv/scratch/shared Here are the 'mount' for those: imgt2:/srv/data/home on /home type nfs4 (rw,relatime,vers=4.2,rsize=1048576,wsize=1048576,namlen=255,hard,proto=tcp,timeo=600,retrans=2,sec=sys,clientaddr=193.50.6.90,local_lock=none,addr=193.50.6.94) imgt2:/srv/data/backup2/scratch on /srv/scratch type nfs4 (rw,relatime,vers=4.2,rsize=1048576,wsize=1048576,namlen=255,hard,proto=tcp,timeo=600,retrans=2,sec=sys,clientaddr=193.50.6.90,local_lock=none,addr=193.50.6.94) imgt2:/srv/data/backup2 on /srv/backup type nfs4 (rw,relatime,vers=4.2,rsize=1048576,wsize=1048576,namlen=255,hard,proto=tcp,timeo=600,retrans=2,sec=sys,clientaddr=193.50.6.90,local_lock=none,addr=193.50.6.94) Thanks, Patrice déc. 10 21:20:02 omega systemd[1]: Reloading. déc. 10 21:20:11 omega systemd[1]: Starting Apache Tomcat 9 Web Application Server... -- Subject: L'unité (unit) tomcat9.service a commencé à démarrer -- Defined-By: systemd -- Support: https://www.debian.org/support -- -- L'unité (unit) tomcat9.service a commencé à démarrer. déc. 10 21:20:11 omega systemd[39264]: tomcat9.service: Failed to set up mount namespacing: No such file or directory déc. 10 21:20:11 omega systemd[39264]: tomcat9.service: Failed at step NAMESPACE spawning /usr/libexec/tomcat9/tomcat-update-policy.sh: No such file or directory -- Subject: Le processus /usr/libexec/tomcat9/tomcat-update-policy.sh n'a pas pu être exécuté -- Defined-By: systemd -- Support: https://www.debian.org/support -- -- Le processus /usr/libexec/tomcat9/tomcat-update-policy.sh n'a pas pu être exécuté, et a donc échoué. -- -- Le code d'erreur renvoyé est ERRNO. déc. 10 21:20:11 omega systemd[1]: tomcat9.service: Control process exited, code=exited, status=226/NAMESPACE -- Subject: Unit process exited -- Defined-By: systemd -- Support: https://www.debian.org/support -- -- An ExecStartPre= process belonging to unit tomcat9.service has exited. -- -- The process' exit code is 'exited' and its exit status is 226. déc. 10 21:20:11 omega systemd[1]: tomcat9.service: Failed with result 'exit-code'. -- Subject: Unit failed -- Defined-By: systemd -- Support: https://www.debian.org/support -- -- The unit tomcat9.service has entered the 'failed' state with result 'exit-code'. déc. 10 21:20:11 omega systemd[1]: Failed to start Apache Tomcat 9 Web Application Server. -- Subject: L'unité (unit) tomcat9.service a échoué -- Defined-By: systemd -- Support: https://www.debian.org/support -- -- L'unité (unit) tomcat9.service a échoué, avec le résultat failed.

troubles with mpt3sas module on a very recent Dell server
Hi, I am trying to install a Debian system on a recently purchased Dell PowerEdge R840. After trying many versions and distributions (including also Ubuntu Server 20.04 LTS) up to Debian Bullseye Alpha 2, the situations are always very similar to this: https://access.redhat.com/solutions/4954451 I checked for all iDRAC, BIOS and firmware updates. Here are version messages extracted from dmesg: 5.7.0-2-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 5.7.10-1 (2020-07-26) x86_64 GNU/Linux mpt3sas version 33.100.00.00 FW Package Ver(16.17.00.05) LSISAS3008: FWVersion(16.00.08.00), ChipRevision(0x02), BiosVersion(18.00.00.00) Hardware setup does not have any RAID support. 5 disks are attached: 1 x 240Go SSD SATA + 4 x 1,8To SAS Don't really know where to address this or if/how I can help. Thanks, Patrice

Re: Re: question related to #953223
> Deleting a configuration file is considered to be a choice of the > administrator and will be preserved. Not always! ;-) Moreover if this remove have been done by a maintainer script without paying too much attention about any «brother» packages. Note that this was consider as a bug also by the maintainer and it was closed since then. Also I try to use tool like 'adequate' do detect such a case on my system but it is not in its scope. Is there a easy way/tool for that? with dpkg itself? What I was trying to suggest with my first post to the list is that may be reinstalling a package (with some removed conffiles) will notifying it in the output whatever the result: keeping it removed, providing a conffile.dpkg-new, ... Thanks, Patrice
Re: Re: question related to #953223
Sorry it was not my intention that the discussion should slide in a different direction than that of my original question. I was just looking for an advice about solving such situation without removing anything from my system because applying 'apt --reinstall install force3' did not restore the removed conffiles .
Re: Re: question related to #953223
Yes exactly you can consider different «problems» there: 1. How to correctly package different source packages that have to share conffiles? So even purging one of them should leave the conffiles for the other installed ones. Laurent is suggesting to not do any explicit 'rm' of any conffiles in .postrm dpkg is doing the job. (if I understand well) And both fuse and fuse3 proceed the same: https://sources.debian.org/src/fuse3/3.9.0-1/debian/fuse3.postrm/ https://sources.debian.org/src/fuse/2.9.9-2/debian/fuse.postrm/ 2. How do get back such conffiles once it have been remove like this? Doing a reinstall is not enough and neither alert anything.
question related to #953223
Hi, I am facing the same situation as reported in the issue here: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=953223 So having no more /etc/fuse.conf on my system, what is the best to get it back? Why doing 'apt --reinstall install fuse3' do not restore this file? Neither notify anything about it? Finally I have forced a purge (because of the dependencies) and so install it from fresh. Thanks, Patrice

Hi, Thanks for all the details. It is probably an effect of GNOME/dbus as the DM is also GDM. So then to do my test, I have used another way to finally get it. Patrice
trouble with my account's groups and strange 'id' result
Hi, Currently on a Debian Sid system, I am facing this inconsistent 'id' result: patrice@hp-dark:~$ id uid=1000(patrice) gid=1000(patrice) groupes=1000(patrice),4(adm),24(cdrom),25(floppy),27(sudo),29(audio),30(dip),44(video),46(plugdev),50(staff),100(users),102(systemd-journal),108(netdev),113(bluetooth),126(kvm),127(debian-tor),997(systemd-coredump) patrice@hp-dark:~$ id patrice uid=1000(patrice) gid=1000(patrice) groupes=1000(patrice),4(adm),24(cdrom),25(floppy),27(sudo),29(audio),30(dip),44(video),46(plugdev),50(staff),100(users),102(systemd-journal),108(netdev),113(bluetooth),126(kvm),997(systemd-coredump),127(debian-tor),999(bumblebee) I have tried to quit the desktop (GNOME) session and to open again a session. I am sure that rebooting my system will solve this 'cache' (systemd?) trouble. Is this expected? And I would have like to make some test without having to reboot before. What do I have to do? small alert regarding mariadb that doesn't want to stop
Dear all, Recently my Debian sid (systemd) was not able to shutdown nor reboot. After investigation, the guilty was the mariadb server (1:10.3.18-1) that was somehow «blocking» the process. Note: forcing multiple «ctrl+alt+del» then provoques a watchdog trap. My first solution was to kill the process before each reboot or shutdown. But I finally found the following: https://superuser.com/questions/1420699/how-to-fix-mariadb-when-it-gets-stuck-during-shutdown-waiting-for-page-cleaner and https://forum.manjaro.org/t/computer-does-not-shut-down-because-of-mariadb/81565 So I related this trouble to the last Daylight saving time (France). Some questions: - do I have to create a bug report? - is there any place for such tricks? (in the Debian wiki?) - or any of this (noise)... Cheers, Patrice
Re: Re: where are the vte2.91 packages of version 0.57.90-1 (experimental)?
Hi, Sure the reason is clearly there: https://buildd.debian.org/status/package.php?p=vte2.91&suite=experimental I don't know why I was so confused between the apt output (and also using synaptic) regarding this? But probably be it was too late for me at that time :-) Thanks!
where are the vte2.91 packages of version 0.57.90-1 (experimental)?
Hi, Since the last upload of version 0.57.90-1 to experimental on the 21th August ( https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/vte2.91), the packages are not in the scope of apt (deb https://deb.debian.org/debian experimental main contrib non-free). But regarding the https://packages.debian.org/experimental/libvte-2.91-0 download table and following for instance the link to https://packages.debian.o rg/experimental/amd64/libvte-2.91-0/download the package seems to be provided there. Finally, I am curios about why is there not always the version column in thoses tables? (only sid seems to have one) Regards, Patrice

help to migrate to git to upgrade packaging abcm2ps
Hi, abcm2ps package does not have any Debian VCS regarding: https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/abcm2ps But there is since few years an active upstream on github. Here are the steps that I tried: gbp import-dsc apt:abcm2ps/sid cd abcm2ps git remote add origin https://github.com/leesavide/abcm2ps.git rm * # note that debian/ will not be remove git pull origin v8.14.1 -Xtheirs --allow-unrelated-histories I hope it is clear what I would like to obtain as an output of the previous steps: getting an adequate file set in sync with the v8.14.1 but keeping the debian/ directory from the Debian packaging from Sid. Also I would like also to be as generic as possible. For instance I do not known if it exists a git facility to retrieve the greatest version tag 'automagically' without using a previous step (to set a $-variable) or any $() expression. But then I still have some differences with a fresh clone using tag v8.14.1: Common subdirectories: abcm2ps/.git and debian/abcm2ps/.git Only in debian/abcm2ps/: debian Only in abcm2ps/: flute.fmt Only in abcm2ps/: landscape.fmt Only in abcm2ps/: musicfont.fmt Only in abcm2ps/: newfeatures.abc Only in abcm2ps/: sample.abc Only in abcm2ps/: sample2.abc Only in abcm2ps/: sample3.eps Only in abcm2ps/: voices.abc Why some files are missing? I tried to find a tutorial but no clue yet. Thanks, Patrice

Hi, That is done under #915042. I hope improving a bit the output by using 'coredumpctl debug' and adding some other debugging symbol packages. Many thanks!

Re: Re: does anyone know how to calm down 'tracker-store'?
Hi, On the server : 1. impossible to remove the tracker package unless to remove other ones: dpkg: dependency problems prevent removal of tracker: tracker-miner-fs depends on tracker (>= 2.1.0). tracker-extract depends on tracker (>= 2.1.0). rygel-tracker depends on tracker (>= 0.8). nautilus depends on tracker. gnome-photos depends on tracker. gnome-music depends on tracker (>= 2.0). gnome-documents depends on tracker (>= 1.99). gnome-core depends on tracker; however: Package tracker is to be removed. gnome-boxes depends on tracker (>= 2.0). dpkg: error processing package tracker (--purge): dependency problems - not removing Errors were encountered while processing: tracker 2. I was trying to find a way to do it globally and 'silently' without asking all the users to do in their session a set of 'systemctl' commands that they never heard about. ;-) Finally I have renamed the binary so at least to stop the log invasion. 3. For the laptop, I will try to chase the bug and install the debugging symbols but for which packages precisely is not clear to me. I will start with the gstreamer ones then. Thanks! Patrice
does anyone know how to calm down 'tracker-store'?
pa2 systemd[6105]: tracker-store.service: Start request repeated too quickly. Nov 26 20:14:00 kappa2 systemd[6105]: tracker-store.service: Failed with result 'exit-code'. Nov 26 20:14:00 kappa2 systemd[6105]: Failed to start Tracker metadata database store and lookup manager. So its log file is growing quite quickly. I suspect that those annoying messages are due to 'tracker', indirectly for case 1. and directly for case 2. Is there a way to inactive 'tracker' at least on a session server without uninstalling it (otherwise some dependencies then would be broken)? Thanks, Patrice

No, ObjC is not dying, it's just not getting the attention it deserves in a C/C++/Java world. So is GNUstep, GNU's implementation of the OPENSTEP API (aka Cocoa in MacOS X). More info at http://www.gnustep.org I remember there being a gnome-wrapper for ObjC, and probably a GTK wrapper too. But that's all I know - my main interest lies in GNUstep... There's also the SWARM project (http://www.swarm.org) that uses ObjC and their own classes (not GNUstep-related). What I've done till now : I have installed the Linux base system from scratch with floppies I understand that the PCMCIA, if I follow the steps during installation, is normally done. I have set up a PPP connection But when i type "pon", nothing happens and i go back to the prompt. Just one thing : my sound card is dead, i don't want to replace it so when i place the card in it's drive, i cannot hear the beep sound... But this shouldn't have any king influence. So what am I supposed to do? To i have to run something like : mount /dev/modem /moden or what? Thanks for your help...
dselect-help!!!!!!!
I have installed Linux on my laptop and i have now to use 'dselect' to install X and others packages. Problem : i can't find my way and i'm stuck with dselect from the beginning. I've downloaded the file 'Dselect documentation for beginners' from debian.org but it's not very helpful. (e.g. : when I go to select i can't understand anything from the different menus and the differents options. For instance, what's the difference between 'Install from a hard disk partition partion (NOT YET MOUNTED)' and 'Install from a filesystem which is already mounted'. Which one should I pick up since i've just installed Debian from floppies?) Basically, I'm looking for : - a manual which explains carefully and with examples what to do when using dselect. - if this is not available, is it possible to have a few directions about how to install X Windows with dselect, notably the very first steps -something in plain english for idiots or retardos. (What i have now on my lap-top computer is plain Linux. I can't use a CD ROM and can't yet get access to the Internet since I don't know how to setup my PCMCIA card. For now my priority is to install X Windows, the Mouse and have some graphical interface to navigate through Linux). Thanks for your help!

mouse problem
Hi, I m a new user of debian linux. I ve installed debian with a cdrom. There was the package gpm for the mouse. That works very good. But after, I ve installed Xwindows and when I mdo "startx' the computer complains about device mouse busy. My mouse is on /dev/cua0. If I remove gpm, startx works. How can I solve this problem in order to have the possibility to have both (a mouse when I use or not the xwindows) If somebody could help me..
