Fwd: NIS woes.. Ubuntu nis client doesn't ping Debian nis Server

2009-08-18 Thread raman narasimhan
*Sorry for my confusing English. I should have been more specific and clear.
*
*
*
*Corresponding to each user, there is a home directory in the Server. So
when the user gives his login and password credentials at the client, this
home directory from the server is mounted onto a directory in the client.
(We use the network file system and just add a line in fstab to mount the
directory from the server onto a directory at the client)**
*
*Concerning firewall, i really don't know how to check it or configure it
although i read something about it. I will try out ssh login.*

Hi again, raman:

On Tuesday 18 August 2009 04:06:27 you wrote:

Sorry but I must say it doesn't make too much sense to me. You can log into
Windows by means of the local graphic console (I know that's not the case),
opening a VNC/RDP session, by telnet... you can even access protected
resources from a server without login (i.e.: mounting a protected shared
resource)...

Each client has his own home directory... you mean each user, don't you?

"From the client system, when it provides that" What? the client system
provides the user's home directory?

"...it can logon to the server" What? The client system can logon to the
server, or is it the user from the client system?

Can you try something simpler like opening an ssh session from an Ubuntu
client system to the server using some user's credentials?

Open a console and type:
ssh u...@server (where "user" is some user you know that can login from a
Debian client -whatever "login" means to you, and "server" is the name or,
better yet the IP address, of the server). If everything goes OK you will
be
propmted for the user's password and will start a session on that user's
home
path.

You see on the comments to that article that such procedure doesn't always
work. How did you test that IPv6 was in fact disabled?

Did you have a look at the Ubuntu clients' firewall?

NIS woes.. Ubuntu nis client doesn't ping Debian nis Server

2009-08-13 Thread raman narasimhan
We have a networks lab at our college that has a fully configured windows
network. Now we are completely changing to linux. All systems in the lab
have been installed with Debian/Ubuntu. We have configured NIS server in one
of the Debian machines. And NIS client in the remaining machines. But the
problem is that though all Debian clients can login into the NIS server,
login into the Debian Server from Ubuntu clients is not possible.
Surprisingly we found out that we couldn't ping the Ubuntu machines from the
Debian Server and vice versa. Since the network is working well in Windows,
it cannot be an external problem. And we have thoroughly checked whether the
NIS server and client have been configured correctly. We found no mistakes.

So what could be the problem?? We have no problems in logging into Debian
Server from Debian clients.

We are new to networking in LINUX. We searched on the Internet and found a
few pages that advice to disable IPV6. Even that didn't work.

problem with downloaded debian 5.0

2009-03-17 Thread raman narasimhan
i used azureus (also known as vuze) a bittorrent client to download debian
5.0 binary 1 dvd from the site
http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/5.0.0/i386/bt-dvd/
after downloading i also performed a data integrity check to see if all the
chunks have been properly downloaded or not.. i found no problems and vuze
began to seed the torrent.

but when i burned the image to a dvd and booted the system from it, debian
installer said that some installer component was missing on the dvd.

i even shifted the download to another torrent client called Deluge and
performed another data check to see if i'd got all the chunks correctly..
there was no error..
how do i check if the image is valid or not??

NAT unreachability problem in VUZE(Azureus)

2009-02-10 Thread raman narasimhan
Sir
i use vuze a lot for downloading. my problem is that it always shows *NAT
reachability Problem, No Incoming Connections* (icon corresponding to NAT in
the bottom right section of the screen is always red) With bit of
'googling' i found that if i can solve this problem, i can download faster
with torrents.

there is a page
http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/NAT_problem

*solution given there is *

The commands below can be entered in a root terminal session to open the
ports (TCP and UDP)

*iptables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport -j ACCEPT
**iptables -I INPUT -p udp --dport -j ACCEPT*

** is the port number you have used for port forwarding
(Avoid 6881-6999, any from 49125-65535 is fine)

Once you've established the port is open you need to make the change persist
through a reboot

*create a file* /etc/init.d/iptables_azureus *and add the lines below*
(sleep 220
 /sbin/iptables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport -j ACCEPT
 /sbin/iptables -I INPUT -p udp --dport -j ACCEPT ) &

The *(sleep 220* is there to make the script wait a few minutes to allow
subsequent firewall configuration scripts to run. 220 seconds is a large
value and you may choose to configure a lower value. The key is that the
opening of the azureus port is not countermanded by the firewall
initialisation which runs later. At the end is a *) &* which allows the
script to let the rest of the boot continue, while the script waits.

chmod +x /etc/init.d/iptables_azureus *make the file executable*
   update-rc.d iptables_azureus start 51 S . *links the file into the
startup sequence*

So i created a file iptables_azureus in /etc/init.d as

*#! /bin/sh
(sleep 220
 /sbin/iptables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport 63549 -j ACCEPT
 /sbin/iptables -I INPUT -p udp --dport 63549 -j ACCEPT ) &

chmod +x /etc/init.d/iptables_azureus
update-rc.d iptables_azureus start 51 S *

then on *execution of iptables_azureus*, i got the following error:
*debian:/etc/init.d# /etc/init.d/iptables_azureus
update-rc.d: warning: /etc/init.d/iptables_azureus missing LSB information
update-rc.d: see
Use of uninitialized value $level in string ne at

usage: update-rc.d [-n] [-f] remove
   update-rc.d [-n] defaults [NN | SS KK]
   update-rc.d [-n] start|stop NN runlvl [runlvl] [...]
.
-n: not really
-f: force*

*i'm new to scripts and have no idea what all this means please help me*

sid. so i decided to update kde, funny that *both aptitude and apt-get said
i've the latest kde*.

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

problems during debian installation

2008-11-18 Thread raman narasimhan
i study in an engg. college student and recently our department (computer
science and engineering) decided to switch from WINDOWS to LINUX.. A few of
us formed linux awareness group and since i was already a linux user i
volunteered to help... we chose DEBIAN as our OS.. we downloaded the debian
binary dvds from the debian.org website.. made copies and distributed it
amongst our friends who needed it..
we encountered a few problems while installation:

1. installation was successful on a system but on re-boot after installation
it showed *gdm failed. X-server errror. Screen not found*. cant access gnome
desktop.

2. installation was successful on a system. but on re-start it showed "*GRUB
LOADER ERROR*". unable to access both windows and debian on it

3. this happened to a friend of mine.. he installed debian.. but on boot-up
his screen showed the following box
..
| Hz? |

this box was moving to and fro on the screen...(i think it's due to some
resolution mismatch)

also files from his *system32 got corrupt* how come??? poor guy couldn't
accesss windows or linux
he got fed up and reinstalled xp!!!

4. two of my friends have wipro laptops that are supposed to be linux
compatible.. the installer couldn't identify the hard disk itself... they
told me it was SATA so i tried all the SATA options in VGUI mode..(normal
mode was not supported dont know Y!! ) but was of no use!!! cant create
partitions if hard disk is not detected...

problem installing debian on wipro 7B1630

2008-09-20 Thread raman narasimhan
i tried to install debian from binary 1 dvd. i set the dvd as the primary
boot device. the installation started as usual. i was not able to install
normally so i selected gui mode. the installation proceeded till DISK
DETECTION.. the installer could'nt detect any disks.. i was then asked to
enter the name of the disk driver.. i knew my disk was SATA so i tried all
available SATA options but still it was of no use.. how do i create a
partition when the installer doesn't detect any drives..

i checked in windows and found WDC WD1600BEVS-22USTO.
what am i supposed to do?? please help me out..
