Just a quick thank you to all who offered advice and help. The errant Samsung hardware has started working again, so my search for a replacement is deferred -- at least for now. In case it helps anybody else, the things that brought the machine back to life were rebooting the printer, clearing the network settings to factory default, reinstalling the Samsung driver (version 1-00-27.04) on my desktop PC, rebooting the printer... I might have thought it was the network settings, but I happen to have printed them out both before and after, and there is absolutely no difference. networked multi-function colour laser printers
Hi, Perhaps someone here has already solved this: I have wasted another 20 hours trying to get sane (or anything that scans) to see a networked Samsung CLX-4195FN. And this is s journey I have travelled before with a B+W Brother MFP which ran for a few years under various flavours of Debian with the help of endless playing with the drivers provided by Brother. Samsung also provide drivers, and I have had the machine operating under Arch and Debian Stable for some months. But I need to run sid to have later versions of other software, hence my current predicament. I need to replace the Samsung with something that really will run under sid. I am looking for a colour laser MFC (no need for fax). It must be networked (ethernet is fine, though wifi would be ok), and modestly priced -- small business model, say in the £200-400 range. I see that HP and OKI both claim to offer Linux drivers, for example. The sane-project.org website never has the current models, however, so I would like to hear any positive experience others have had before buying another expensive failure. Can't suggest any models, but make sure it works *before* you buy it! The problem is how to be sure. Nvidia chipset problems on Presario
I have an HP Compaq Presario CQ60 laptop. Having no high-speed connection, I have installed Debian 5.0.2 from the dvd set. This gives me kernel· 2.6.26-2-686. The Presario has an nvidia chipset (see output of lspci below). The installer evidently fails to recognise this or doesn't have the right drivers. Console writes to screen in a manner reminiscent of an old teletype terminal. I installed the nvidia driver so that X now runs acceptably fast and at the correct resolution (1366 x 768). But the console remains slow. Also there is no sound. Presumably both these are driver issues. For the sound, it seems clear the wrong modules are loaded, see output of 'lsmod | grep snd' below.· A further problem which may be connected is that the keyboard regularly freezes. This appears to happen always after the ppp connection (to a mobile phone acting as a GPRS modem) has been dropped by the supplier, but this may be a coincidence. When it happens, it is impossible to give keyboard input to any X-window, or to jump to a console. It does not appear to be a sleep issue, as it does not occur after closing the lid and leaving the laptop overnight, for example. How do I correct these, given that I cannot do a major upgrade as there is only a slow internet connection here? In my case, to get audio working properly, I had to upgrade to the latest ALSA. Try going to alsa-project.org and getting the latest drivers. If you don't do all, then they reset themselves when printing a page and have to be redone for the next page. It may be that some of these can be omitted, there were too many to permutate completely, but I spent 3 hours trying before succeeding. gimp tools frozen
This is odd. Just moved to a new (er) box. Newly installed testing system. Gimp2 is almost unusable as the tools (pen, airbrish, whatever) don't work. It seems to think the cursor is stuck at 0,0. Yet the mouse (usb) works fine for everything else. Another thing: I cannot get the mouse srollwheel to activate zoom in and zoom out. I set it up in input devices, but nothing happens. scrollwheel zoom works in qcad, so it's not a hardware issue. Anyone recognise this? iceweasel and libflashplayer
On an etch box, I recently hit a website that insisted I should upgrade to flashplayer 9. No sweat, I did. Now I notice BBC and other sites keep telling me I need to upgrade flashplayer. about:plugins says I have flashplayer 7 and flashplayer 9. In that order. I suppose this to be the problem, though I know no way to remove flashplayer 7 from firefox, sorry, iceweasel. locate shows only one libflashplayer.so on my system, that in /usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins/ (I am ignoring the copy in my download directory, which must be irrelevant). I have grepped around in iceweasel trying to find a config file with the defunct pointer to no avail. Any ideas? I suppose the BBC has changed its codec or something. I used to be able to play Listen Again programmes on the BBC site with their BBC Radio Player, which opened in a separate Firefox/Iceweasel window. Now it just complains about a missing codec called, oddly, cook. Is there a debian package for this? Or if not is there some other way to hear the BBC in debian? I've just found texlive on a new etch install cannot find graphics called
with includegraphics{}. These are files that ran with Latex, and have
'\usepackage{graphicx}'. The only error message is
dvips: Could not find figure file /home/richard/foo/bar.eps; continuing
The graphics files are still there and permissions are ok.
Is this a problem with the debian package, or an inherent characteristic
of tex-live. I.e. do I have to revert to latex or look for some
additional package?

Are you using latex? or pdflatex? pdflatex will not use EPS files.
Please show us the complete error message you are getting, including
the command you used to invoke it.
You can also try reproducing the problem with an absolutely minimal
.tex file, perhaps with nothing else but the \includegraphics in it.
PS: I assume you mean reverting to 'tetex' when you write reverting to
'latex'.
Well, yes, perhaps that is the old latex package in Debian. These templates
have worked for years with no problem. It is only now with a fresh
install (but retaining my old /home partition) that they suddenly fail.
I am not sure all the following detail helps much, but here it comes:
The commands to process the file are given from a script and are

It looks as though latex completes normally with
Output written on marcello08c03-print.dvi (1 page, 1484 bytes).
And the error message is as I reported while dvips is running:

The resulting ps file is perfect but lacking the images.
The file is readable:
$ ls -l /home/richard/0/ico/14p5b-25mm.eps

And the eps extension has been correctly assumed so I suppose it is
still the default as it was with latex.

I find using the full path to a .jpg or .gif file works well, .eps files have
always been a bit of a problem. But I use/d LyX in testing and etch.
I do give the full path. It is an eps because that has always been the
default expected by latex (though you do have to omit the extension in
the command, so \includegraphics{/path/to/that} includes /path/to/that.eps),
and I have never before had any problem with this or other eps
inclusions.

This might not solve your problem, but I experience a similarly weird
problem a while ago on Debian Testing. It turned out the default output
of the latex command had changed (to something other than dvi perhaps?).
Anyhow, I cannot remember the details but I do remember that the
situation didn't make sense at the time -- something same as yours. I
modified the source tex file a bit (it was related to output format, PDF
vs dvi) and then it worked.
How about you give a minimal example that shows the problem and I can
try it out for your on my machine.

I have exactly the same problem with dvips. Even giving the whole path for an
eps file.
But because what I need is a pdf output of the latex file, I use dvipdfm (not
dvipdf,
which uses dvips). No problem with it.

With my designer cap on, I would also admit the possibility that the baby-toy penguin, which has become so intimately associated with Linux, might also be recycled into an acceptable logo. Knopper to some extent has succeeded in doing this in the graphics for the Knoppix distros, with the cunning combination of tech drawing and cuddly plump proportions. I say 'to some extent' because, in fact, cuddly is not what is needed on the office desk (during work hours at least). If you need to shrink one and the filesystem doesn't allow it, you have to create a new LV, put a new filesystem on it, move the data, and remove the old LV. The best HOWTO is the LVM howto in the doc-linux package (from tldp.org). The trick is to be aware of the layers and to resize things at the right layer. Yes the concept is complicated, but the actual useage is rather magical. Whatever floats your boat. It really does seem that I shall have to find time to get round LVM some day. mail headers with exim4 using ISP smarthost
I am slightly puzzled by the following headers in mail I send out from this home network on DSL via the ISP's smtp server. I think this is something my exim4 is writing, and it looks odd (though it does no obvious harm). The box has hostname scatola and the domain name is co-ho.net, which is resolved by zoneedit. But in place of the domain name, it says 'config' -- see below. What do I have misconfigured in the wild and wonderful maze that is /etc/exim4? Simply plugging in the modem (via the microfilter) gives it a connection. It is pppoe but you don't need to manage it at all. The modem/router acts as dhcp server on the inside ethernet. You just need dhclient set up. Once that connects, use ifconfig for some info. There is usually a web interface to control the modem/router. Generally it is visible by pointing your browser at 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.254 or similar. Probably, it will have a factory preset administrator name and password, which you will need to get from the ISP, or the info they sent on paper or cd. When you have them, you need to change them, obviously (they are likely to be something dumb like admin/admin). The modem/router frequently has a pretty reasonable firewall built-in. You should be able to configure the firewall, see stats about the connection (including the external static IP), see the users connected, and more (they frequently come with wi-fi, and the settings for that will also be accessible). The interface is usually an irritatingly dumbed-down set of pages accessed in an inscrutable menu hierarchy, with the important bits almost impossible to find -- but they are there somewhere. So: set up dhclient and get the admin logon and password from the ISP and you should be away... mkinitrd and glibc version problem in etch
Hi all. Silly situation: I have been wanting to release my etch install from the LVM so as to be able to adjust the partitioning. The arrangement was: /dev/mapper/Debian-root on / type ext3 (rw,errors=remount-ro) /dev/hda1 on /boot type ext3 (rw) /dev/mapper/Debian-home on /home type ext3 (rw) /dev/mapper/Debian-tmp on /tmp type ext3 (rw) /dev/hdb2 on /usr type ext3 (rw) /dev/mapper/Debian-var on /var type ext3 (rw) /dev/hdb2 on /usr type ext3 (rw) /usr used also to be in the LVM, but I ran out of space so I simply copied to hdb (which is 80GB, against 20GB of hda). Obviously /home and /tmp present no problems - I can simply copy them wherever I want and remount. I decided to copy the root partition and var to two new partitons on hdb, then mount the new root to /mnt/hdb13 (or whatever) and mount all the other filesystems into that, mount -o bind /dev /mnt/hdb13, and mount -t proc none /mnt/hdb13 so as to be able to chroot there and make a new initrd. I upgraded an etch laptop from 2.6.17 to 2.6.18 and it mysteriously purged grub, removing the /boot/grub directory entirely. This was left unresolved after a discussion (2.6.18 problems with grub and ACPI) on debian-laptop. I'd better erase the LVM and repartition hda, then install etch cleanly and swap back in my /home, /usr/local, most of the rest of /usr, /var/www, ... and then copy selected bits of /etc too. It is not so much a question of backups, as most of the variable user data is already on separate partitions. A pity. It was running sweetly enough before. Or do I have to remove the existing module first, or what? Answering myself: What I've tried is 'modprobe -r snd-hda-intel' followed by 'modprobe snd-hda-intel model=acer'. And the same for the other one, (which is acer-aspire not acer-laptop BTW). In each case unmuted 'Front' and put volumes up etc in alsamixer. Then reload the module with modprobe snd-hda-intel model=your choice of model Oh thanks Kushal. I'd worked that out in the mean time, and tried what looked most likely. Only then did I discover in dmesg this: hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC882, trying auto-probe from BIOS... So now I know the model name and can see the known options from the URL you gave me. The obvious one there was 3stack-dig 3-jack with SPDIF I/O simply on the basis that I have three jacks on the front of the laptop. I have no idea what SPDIF I/O is, but I tried it anyway, and alsamixer then failed to load, saying: alsamixer: function snd_mixer_load failed: Invalid argument So that was a no. I suppose I can try all the alternatives, I guess it an't do any harm. You can try different codec chip models (e.g. 3stack) by running: modprobe -r snd_hda_intel modprobe snd_hda_intel model=3stack I tried that arbitrarily, but it didn't happen to be the one. I shall have to read the documentation to see what other options there are. There might be a model which makes sound work right away, or which at least gives you an additional control which you can unmute and turn up. Maybe one of the other workarounds discussed in ALSA-Configuration.txt will get you going. If you find module parameters that work then you can append them to the hda-intel options line in /etc/modprobe.d/sound. Other things to consider are: - The problem might go away automatically if you upgrade to a newer version of ALSA and/or the kernel. (I don't recall if you mentioned which branch of Debian you are currently using.)i Yes, I did upgrade to the latest in etch (which I am running currently) hoping for such a miracle. Maybe I should consider going back to sid, which I ran for a long time previously. I had the impression three months or so ago that that was a bad moment to get into sid, so I am still here in etch. - Maybe you can avoid the trial-and-error if you find someone who figured it out already for your laptop model. In fact, this may be another advantage of the samsung. You cannot listen via the headphones when the USB is connected, but since you have complete access to the filesystem while it is charging, I assume you could listen via the computer. Thanks, guys. I have been doing the same sort of thing -- in more
complex templates -- for some years. I've always felt it was a bit
clumsy to finish up with all these files cluttering up my nice clean
directories. So now you have spurred me into writing a script to take
a given letter -- just the bit from the address to the end of the
content -- and add the template letterhead, the date, and the closing,
put the heading in bold, then latex, dvips, save a tagline on the
original body file to say which template was used, what date, and what
style of closing, clean up the intermediate files and make tea.
Well, I nearly did it too, but I couldn't persuade bash to stop
stripping out backslashes, so I've started again in perl. Nearly there
now. So thanks for the stimulation. I've been putting this off for
years. Now I'll be able to write letters mostly in plain text. :-)
But it doesn't yet make tea...

If you click on v, and select the text/html version of the message and click on r, mutt will quote the text/html version of message, and not the plain text. My mutt doesn't do that. Just gives me a blank page (i.e. the contents of the empty email without the html attachment).
