isapnp.conf

2003-05-30 Thread sdownes
My laptop has an expansion port containing a 3c509b ethernet card.
The 2.2 kernel, LTSP boot disk & windows recognise this as
io 0c300 irq 10 & work.
The 2.4.20 kernel recognises it as 0x220 irq 5 & doesn't

2.4 kernel says it uses isapnp but I cannot run it from root or find it or
find a isapnp.conf file.

How do I specify io = 0x300 & irq = 10 in the new kernel? please

Steve

I am now finding that the new kernel (2.4.20) includes P&P & is changing
the 3c509 settings from irq 10 addr 0x300 to irq 5 addr 0x220.

I am researching but so far without success. Anyone know how to either
change the cards to fit the kernel or the kernel to fit the card?

 Original Message

Hi Steve,

I encountered this same problem just a few days ago with Woody/kernel
2.4.20, although I'm ashamed to admit it didn't occur to me to check
the DHCP server logs on the gateway machine.I don't know if the fix
I found will work for your scenario, but here's what I found with
kernel 2.4.20 and a Realtek 8139 ethernet device using the '8139too'
kernel module:

Try using 'pump' to grab an IP address:

pump -i eth0

(Or eth1, or whatever interface you're trying to grab an IP for)

This worked on my machine even when eth0 wasn't getting an address at
boot time.

After some more usenet/mailing list searches I read that the
CONFIG_FILTER flag needs to be set to 'y' in the kernel '.config' file
in order for DHCP to work correctly upon boot. I checked my .config
file, and sure enough CONFIG_FILTER wasn't set. I set it to 'y',
recompiled, reinstalled the kernel package, and rebooted. Eth0 grabbed
an IP address without a hitch!

The usual caveats apply; YMMV, try this at your own risk, etc, but
CONFIG_FILTER=y did the trick for me.

mt,

-Andy

dhclient testing

2003-05-27 Thread sdownes
Just set up a new (to me) laptop. It finds its DNS over dhcp when booting
on a stable kernel but will not on kernel 2.4-20 (pentium classic) it is
issuing requests & the server is receiving them & according to its logs
replying correctly. But the client is not receiving the info. All hardware
the same on both kernels. ports are 67 68 as far as I can see.

Any ideas anyone?

I've got the deb stable packages installed with default settings at

with a lot of settings in that before purging it & starting again. I do
have cupsys cupsys-client & cupsys-bsd installed but not the gimp package.

As some of my software will only print to lp &therefore will not print

Try looking in /var/log/syslog; that is where my tftp requests show up. I
can't really help with the entry in /etc/inetd.conf since I use
/etc/xinetd.conf. Here are my entries for LTSP in xinetd.conf:

service bootps
{
socket_type =3D dgram
protocol=3D udp
wait=3D yes
user=3D root
server  =3D /usr/sbin/bootpd
server_args =3D -i -t 120
}

service tftp
 {
socket_type =3D dgram
protocol=3D udp
wait=3D yes
user=3D root
server  =3D /usr/sbin/in.tftpd
server_args =3D -s /tftpboot
disable =3D no
 }
--=20

Yes that helped. TFTP is not running properly. the DHCP lines show in
syslog & the fact that it can't find tftp is also shown.

Sadly xinet looks very different from inet so I'll have to follow up that.

Many thanks for your help

LTSP & TFTP on Woody

I've installed the Linux Terminal Server .debs on my file server & I'm
trying to run an old machine from it. I have got the DHCP working & the
terminal is finding its address & asking for the kernel but then nothing.

I've installed TFTP & it is in inetd.conf & services but I think it isn't
listening fot the call from the workstation.

I've tried the tftp -s option & normal & adjusted the dhcp command to suit
& everything else I can think of.

How can I tell whether tftp is listening & if not why not?

command line (lp -d lp@rm "filename") returns:-

Re: Recording on SB Live

2002-10-29 Thread sdownes
I'm using emu10k1 with the sound card with sound, soundcore, & ac97_codec.

Reading between the lines on your email would suggest this is not enough.
The sound-HOWTOs seem to suggest that this should work but don't offer
much help.

I have had a brief look at alsa & again it seems a bit vague on the
recording side. The deb packages lists loads of alsa related packages.
which ones do I need if emu10k1 isn't going to work?

No, not as simple as that. Hosts makes no difference. I am running a dns

ip numbers correct both on the network & on the internet.

As entering ip Nos works I'll live with that for a while.

Re: Imap/Samba

Thanks pointed me in the right direction. Once I had installed telnet on
my server I found I could only log in from my windows box by using the IP
number.

I have noticed before that when I ping from the windows box it shows the
windows IP number rather than the server IP number. Put it down to a samba
issue.

If I enter IP numbers instead of server name in Eudora away it goes.

test it using telnet:

telnet host 143
(when you see the IMAP banner:)
A001 LOGIN username password
A002 LOGOUT

where username/password..are..well you know :) if that works then
you can reach it from that machine. Be sure you have eudora configured
for IMAP access if your using IMAP(its been 4-5 years since i've seen
eudora and i think back then it was POP3-only). Also it doesn't hurt
to try another email client, I always reccomend this to people having
trouble, if another client works then the problem can be isolated to
that software(or it's configuration) on the client computer rather then
anything on the server. There are several free mail software programs
available.

if your asking if samba could be causing problems with cyrus the
answer would be no, I can't imagine how samba could in any way interfere
with cyrus. if your question is something else I'm not sure what your
asking.

good luck

Shouldn't command be
command = "/usr/sbin/cyrdeliver ${local_part}" ? At least that's the

Exim & Cyrus

2002-09-22 Thread sdownes

I've had exim working well for some time & am now trying to add cyrus
imap. I'm getting the following error having modified exim.conf in line
with the exim book as follows:-

local_delivery_cyrus:
driver  = pipe
command = /usr/cyrus/bin/deliver \
-m ${substr_1:${local_part_suffix}}\
  --${local_part}
user= cyrus
group   = mail
return_output

log_output

prefix  =
suffix  =

I can't find deliver anywhere on the system which is presumably error 1
Sending a message to me produces:-

Child process of local_delivery_cyrus transport returned 69 (could
mean +service or program unavailable) from command:
/usr/cyrus/bin/deliver

Anybody suggest the next step - all debian testing & software all from
apt-install .deb files
