kopete problem after upgrade
A recent upgrade on my Sid Desktop has produced a strange problem with kopete. Now on my contact list every other contact is encased in a dark grey. The program functions ok, but it makes the contacts hard to read and is quite annoying. I've checked the settings and can find no way to fix the problem. This is the only program that I have seen behaving in this manner. Anybody have a clue to where I can fix this problem. OT: EV1 caves to SCO
I'm sure most of you have seen or heard about this http://slashdot.org/articles/04/03/01/1818201.shtml I must say that I didn't think I could have a lower opinion of the owner of EV1, but I have been proven wrong. I used to work for EV1, as a matter of fact one of the early employees, when they were just starting out. My employee number was 13. When I was there, I setup all the original game servers under Debian. I ran a bnetd server among others. As a matter of fact before I left I had been developing a new web-based email system to replace the one that they were using. I think the only reason it never came out was because the head Sys Admin was a windows guy and didn't want the main system running something he didn't like. A number of us quit early on, because we felt that we were not getting properly compensated for the ammount of work we were putting into the company. My paychecks were normally for 80 hrs. a week. But, as much of a low opinion I have about the owner, I think this is an all new low. Even though it is probably just a business move on his part, I wonder how many people will quit their service with them because of the move. I for one wish I still had an account there, so I could call up and cancel it. I know this is Off Topic...But I needed to vent a little. Kinda OT: Streaming Audio/Video
I have a client that among other things is about to start a Web-based Talk audio show. His early needs would be to Stream the audio from the webserver. Has anyone had experience in this area? I would love some advice on software plus hardware. My first thoughts would be to use icecast on the web-server. but use a seperate machine for the encoding. Although I'm not exactly sure what to use for encoding the stream. I briefly looked at Helix DNA producer for encoding, and freedomaudio on the webpage. The box for encoding currently has a Soundblaster PCI 128, but I would assume it would be better to have some sort of other hardware, besides just pluging the mic in to the mic jack. any recommendations on descent hardware would be great, but since this is just a test project, we really don't want to spend alot of cash. As far as the OS, the webserver is running stable, and the encoding machine is running unstable. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated Wayne -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". iptables question
I have a box that I use for routing, it's running sid, with ipmaq on it. It works fine for the most part. For a while I had an internal axis webcam that was port forwarded. I use to put in the following at the command prompt iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -j DNAT --proto tcp --dport --to-destination 192.168.0.200:80 this always worked before, but recently I installed a new server for routing, and set it up the same, but when I put the iptables line in, it no longer works. I don't get an error, but when I open up a web browser it trells me the connedction was refused. Am I missing something? Sid & PHP4-Mysql
I installed Sid on a box yesterday. I set it up with apache, php4, and mysql. I transfered a working site over to the box, but when I connect I get an error that mysql_pconnect is an undefined function. I checked and I do have the php4_mysql package installed, as a matter of fact I re-installed the package just to make sure. As usual, it added it's extension to the php.ini file, so I am at a loss as to why it's not working. Has this happened to anyone else running sid? Is there something I can do to resolve this besides starting over with a woody install? Stan -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Running a > buggy app under Wine won't make it crash any less. It may well make it > crash MORE. I really love the analogy of comparing wine to a crutch. Because that is exactly what it is. An as a crutch, we should not be trying to make the crutch better, rather work on healing the leg so that the crutch is not needed. In this case instead of making windows apps work under linux, we make linux apps that are better. And to those companies who will not port their products to linux, especially the games makers, we tell them you can shove your windows krap, we will use a native product, and even if the native one is not as good, I will still use it over you product, so you either develop for us or go bankrupt. If we continue on this "make linux able to run windows app" we give no insentive to companies to develop for linux. That as was said before OS/2 fell for the same reason. No one developed for os/2, so win windows changed it's code and win-os/2 couldn't run the new apps..well we know what happened. os/2 was too far behind with it's native apps to catch up. So use wine as a crutch if you wish, but never want it to be a full product, or we will lose in the marketplace. Wayne -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Ok, I use to have a setup where Linux was on my primary HD, and windows was on a 2nd slave HD. I had once found some options to put into lilo, that made it possible for winXP to boot off the slave, which it won't do with a standard dual-boot setup. I think the option made winxp think it was on the primary HD. Unfortunately when I upgraded to SID, it messed up my lilo.conf file, and I can't remember what those option were. again, I'm not talking about just setting up a dual boot, I know how to do that, I need the options to make winxp boot if it is on a slave drive. Compaq RIB
I'm setting up a Compaq ML370, and one of the developers wants me to install X. The box boots with video defaulted to the Compaq RIB, which has an ATI rage IIc video chipset. I've configured things normally. Used the ati driver, but when I try to start X it says ATI(0): Adapter has not been initalised Screens found, but none have a usuable configuration. Has anyone successfully gotten x to run on a Compaq RIB before? Wayne
Is woody Broken?
FOr two weeks now, I have been trying to do a net install of woody on 2 different servers. I have even used different apt servers with the same result. I started by just doing a base install, selecting nothing at tasksel. The install errors at libopenldap-runtime. When I goto dselect to remove it, it also wants to remove bsdutils, perl, exim, cron, net,..etc. This has been the same result 8 times, after formating and starting over. What's going on? I thought Woody was frozen. Wayne

Troubleshooting method
OK, I'm about to pull my hair out over this, so I'm hoping someone here can give me a clue. I've got a server that is currently running Debian Woody. It's been running since potato first went stable, upgraded to woody about 9 months ago. But, in the last month, I've had to reboot it twice. It just stops working. All services are un-accessable...SSH, Apache, & dns. The funny thing is you can still ping the IP and it answers, but everything else stops. Un fortunately I have no console access. I'm in Europe, and the Box is in the US. But, when I get the co-lo people to reboot it, The logs show nothing out of the ordinary. I'm thinking it could be bad memory, or the SCSI card going out, but how do I tell from here? Anyone have any suggestions on how to trouble shoot this? Wayne
embeded nic and wireless pcmcia problem
Okay, I have a laptop with an embedded nic, and A wireless Netgear MA401 PCMCIA card. Both work fine except for one problem. If the wireless nic is in on boot, once it boots I have to ifconfig eth0 down in order for the wlan0(wireless) to work. Is there a way for the system to just recognize that the embedded in not being used, and that the pcmcia nic should be up? Wayne

Re: HELP. I can't login as root !!!
Hey guys, this is not a coruption, but a new thing with Gnome. I had the problem and wrote Gnome Directly. They have decided that you should not be able to login to Gnome as root. You should always login as the user and su to root. I think I was told that it could be fixed in the gdm.conf. I just figured that I didn't like them doing that so I went back to KDM. Any comercial apps made it back to the community?
I was reading today about the pending release of libranet 2.0. And, realizing that they are the last commercial linux based on Debian, got me to thinking. (scary as that is!) Of all the other commercial versions, Corel, Storm, Prodgeny, has any of their advancements made it back to the debian community since their demise. I remember reading that when corel shutdown, they were going to give their stuff to a sourceforge project, But I've never seen it. Stormix had a nice firewall interface, but the only place I've seen that is a CD in my desk-drawer. So, I'm wondering, is the only place to find their stuff, is in the source code from their CD's? Or, is someone out there still working on it? Wayne
Webmin on Debian
I have installed Webmin through the tar ball and haven't had any problems. But with a new server, which I installed woody, I used apt to install it. Sound card worked, now it doesn't
When I installed Potatoe, the sound card worked perfectly. I set it up so my user worked fine. I upgraded to woody, and still the user sound worked fine. I upgraded to 2.4.17, now root can do sound, but the user cannot. I compiled the sound driver into the kernel, and like I said root works fine. I checked the groups file, it's correct. No Users sound after compiling 2.4.17
Ok, when I originally set up the system it was potato and everything worked fine. Sound worked for root and my user.(so I know it's not a group problem.) I upgraded to woody, still everything worked fine. The card is a Soundblaster pci 128, and I used the es1370 module, and it worked. Then I compiled the 2.4.17 kernel. Instead of modules, I compiled support for it into the kernel. Now, Root still has sound, but when I log in as a user I get nothing. Checked the group file, and everything is still fine. RE: i mean..we are using an illegal hacker operation system
This has got to be a joke. Looking through the site, this guy has made comments to other people's stories. And there are alot of them bad mouthing Linux. Well, everytime he posted he spelled Linux correctly, so why now when he's really bashing it he spells it lunix. Plus if you folow the link to the official web page of the lunix hacker operation system, it's to a page called http://www.lunix.com which claims to be the official gateway for the Linux world. But, if you'll look at the graphics, it's done in frontpage. I doubt any self respecting Linux buff would do a page in using frontpage. Well I could be wrong on that, but it does seem strange to me. I have a SB PCI 128, I had everything setup and working fine under woody. I used the essoniq es1370 module, and it worked fine. Upgraded to woody, now GDM will not accept my root password. I can change terminals and I can log in as root fine, but GDM will not accept it, but will allow user login. So, I installed KDM since I log into KDE anyway, but KDM does not show KDE as a choice for my GUI. I had no problem logging into KDE using GDM under potato. What's the deal? 1. Why does GDM not accept the root password, when the console does? 2. Why does KDM not show KDE as a choice? 3. Why does it seem that since Ian Moore has become part of debian/woody, that KDE has had alot of bugs? He seemed to be better off when we hooked upto tdyc. Jack

windows manager list in KDM
I just had the problem on 2 computers. I recently did a fresh install of Debian 2.2 r2 on my Desktop and my Laptop. I installed most packages,xfree86, gnome, etc From the cd it installs XDM, and makes Window maker my default. No biggy, because untill I started using KDE, window maker was my choice. So then I connected to the net, set Debian in my sources list, then did an apt-get update && apt-get upgrade. After that, comes my first question, Since the default install use XDM, and I now have gnome and Window Maker, Where do I set which one starts as default? After the update I select to install GDM, to make sure everything is working fine. Once installed and after a reboot, GDM comes up and I see in its session menu list, I have the selections for Debian(window maker) and Gnome. I leave Debian(window makes) as default. So far so good. Now, I add kde.debian.net into my sources list, Update, and using Dselect add task-kde. I check and make sure, and it's set to install KDM, and remove GDM. After everything is finished, I reboot. Now the real problem. The sessions list on the KDM only has 2 listings, default and failsafe. Default is Window maker. So what the [EMAIL PROTECTED] happened to Gnome, and why is KDE not listed. If I log into default(window maker), on the menu, under window managers, all are listed, and I can change between them. So, why is it not in the KDM sessions list. I first thought this was just a glitch, but it happened on both computers. I hope someone can help. Wayne

RE: Compile vs. Apt-get(was woody+php+php-nuke)
I had under the former subject. I had originally had Debian (stable) set up with php4 and a site done with php-nuke. I started working on a new project that, because of certain requirenments, was better suited for woody. So, I upgraded. During the upgrade, it un-installed php4. After the upgrade, I went into dselect to add php4 back in. When I try, it complains that it needs a version of apache lower than the one in woody, and won't install. I then installed php3, but have not been able to get the site back up, because the php3-mysql module will not talk to mysql. So I considered just compiling in php4 manually. Which I do not want to do if that would mess up apt/dselect. If you got the php4.tar.gz file, untarred it, ran configure, then did a make install, Debian will not know that you have the php4 package installed, and it will not upgrade your php4. The only way Debian can know that you have php4 installed is if you install a .deb using dpkg (atp,dselect,etc.). What are you doing that you feel you need to compile packages that are already in the Debian archives? The problem was actually in Apache. It didn't install completely. I went into the httpd.conf, and all that was in there was just the modules, no other config info. The srm was completely blank. I removed both apache and jserv. The I just installed apache, once it was configured and running, I then installed jserv. I had no problems this time. woody, apache, & jserv
I'm running woody on a server, I used dselect to install apache and jserv. Now when apache tries to start up it errors saying: Syntax error on line 120 of /etc/jserv/jserv.conf: Invalid command 'SetHandler', perhaps mis-spelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration Line 120 of /etc/jserv/jserv.conf SetHandler jserv-status order deny, allow deny from all allow from localhost obviously line 120 is the SetHandler is this something I need or can I just comment it out, or is something that can be fixed easily. woody, XF86 4.0.2 upgrade & kde2.0
I had stable installed with X (which ever comes with stable), and KDE 2, on my laptop. Everything running fine I upgraded to woody, and then installed x 4.0.2. It unistalled KDM, Why? Does KDM not work with XF86 4.0.2? When I type startx the bare wm comes up, but the mouse no longer worked, so I did xf86config. setting the mouse to /dev/gpmdata the mouse moved but was not moving correctly. I re-installed KDM thinking it would start up KDE, but when I rebooted, it says starting KDM, but stays in console mode. any clues??? wayne

webmail/jserv
Has anyone had experience setting up 'Webmail' from sourceforge? I've tried to install it, but I run into problems installing apache jserv. i tried using the jserv in dselect. But webmail claimed it needed a newer version. So when I downloaded the newest one from apache, It errors saying that jserv is not a proper dso. So I'm hoping I can get some hints from someone. Wayne
