Re: Debian gnome printing to pdf

2012-02-06 Thread tjm3

Mmm... did you miss my post? :-)

Chrome can use your gnome printing dialog (Ctrl+Shift+P).

Ok, then. No I did not miss the post, but I also do not sit
in front of this computer all day.

As far as the gnome print dialog, I already know this and posted it.
(read twice, post once, please)
___

Tony, yes I understand that. Just stating that the option was not
available when using google chrome.

I think the issue is with gnome-print. The gnome (or system) print
dialog appears not just with chrome but with most other programs where
printing is available. The issue remains to be where the config is
located to change the default filename and directory when printing to
a file.

2004-11-30 Thread tjm3
Thanks for the info.
Just making sure that the installation was correct. It is a
blank window, not an empty document. Seems like Sun would at
least put some sort of logo here or provide an option to start
the application with a empty default document of my choice.

Why should there be?
SO & OOo work on documents. SO7 provides you an empty document.
What's the problem?

Well, it seems SO7 doesn't provide him with an empty, but with *no*
document. Still, I think that's how it's meant to be. At least some
former versions of StarOffice (and maybe OpenOffice) presented a sort
of desktop view from which you could start the individual applications
like Writer or Calc.
The OpenOffice incarnation I have here (1.1.2) also seems to look the
way you describe it. The application starter - or however you would
call it - from KDE only has links to the separate apps (Writer, Calc,
etc). When I start it manually by typing `openoffice' I get a blank
screen with a menu on top saying File, Edit, etc. So your SO7 seems
fine.

ieee1394 hotplug patch for 2.4.xx

Hello.

Has anyone used the scsi add/remove patch from http://www.linux1394.org/sbp2.html
to patch their 2.4.xx kernel to enable better hotplugging for ieee1394 disk drives?
If so, were there any adverse effects to any other hardwired scsi disks or cdrom's
that you noticed?

It's the 'use at you own risk' warning that bothers me.

You might want to give gThumb a try.

IFireBall.

After playing with several packages, I settled on a program called
gfxindex, not in the Debian distribution, to display images and
thumbnails. Do a search, it's easy to find. Run gfxindex from the
directory containing the images and it will create the thumbnails and
the files necessary to view the images with a web browser. The web
site for gfxindex will tell you what you need to run it.

You can also use gtksee or gqview.

Re: Quiet cases

Can you recommend any good (not too expensive) quiet cases? I may build
a computer soon to be my home grown PVR/DVD combo, and of course
anything sitting in the living room on all the time needs to be quiet.

Over the years, I have been using power supplies from PC Power and
Cooling ( http://www.pcpowercooling.com ). Their Silencer line is very
quiet. I have also used Enermax Whisper power supplies and these are
also very quiet. As for processor cooling, find something with a good
heat sink and a multispeed fan and adjust accordingly.

The CUPS admin claims the Printer State is

 Printer State: processing, accepting jobs.

and the printer is connected through

 Device URI: parallel:/dev/unknown-parallel0

But whenever I try to print a test page, first it says

"Printing page 0, 7%"

then eventually it says

"Printer not connected; will retry in 30 seconds..."

This never changes and nothing ever gets printed. Furthermore, nothing
happens if I say

echo "stuff" > /dev/lp0

although I don't know if I should expect it to. I know it is not the
case that the printer actually is not connected, since whenever I reboot
to Windows I can print everything just fine.

I have one of these C82's running successfully on Debian 3.0. I

There is a driver here for CUPS and one for LPR. My setup

Re: How to make a DSL Internet Connectioo?

router which is connected to a DSL modem.
The connections were tested with Windows 98 and there was no problem
connecting to the internet.

In Woody I have edited /etc/ppp/pap-secrets and
/etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider to enter the user, provider and password
information. ifconfig eth0 reports the device up. dmesg | grep -A 5
eth reports a negotiated connection.
Still, I am unable to access the internet - i.e. apt-get update fails,
in mozilla www.debian.org is unknown, etc.

I know I have missed something basic, but what?

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions or guidance.

I have a system very similar to this. I have a dedicated IP from my
provider, but if you need to logon, your linksys dsl router should be
configured to make the logon (pppoe configuration, I think). Once this
is done, you should add the router as the default gateway to your eth0
interface and then add the DNS computer (ip) addresses your ISP gave you
to your /etc/resolv.conf file. With this done, you should be able to
connect to the outside. I think this is all you need, give it a try.
I am a little unclear why your using the pap-secrets and dsl-provider
files unless your trying to logon to the dsl connection. The router
has a provision to do this for you and keep the connection up all the
time.

route -n ;to check that the gateway is there

;use this to add the default gateway
route add default gw 192.168.1.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth0

don't need to.

if your sources.list has references to 'stable' (as opposed to
potato) just run

apt-get update ; apt-get dist-upgrade

no reboot required, no new kernels will be installed unless you
specifically request it.

I've upgraded about 30 systems from potato to woody and had flawless
results for al of them except 1(which was due to bad memory, I
was still able to recover it manually within about 20 minutes).

in all cases I run my own kernels so I do not request a kernel
upgrade from my friend apt-get

if your sources.list references potato, change it to say stable
instead(or woody if you want to be safe, to prevent an accidental
upgrade when the next 'stable' comes out.)

Re: Cheap SCSI controller?

2002-11-12 Thread tjm3
Hello. I currently use Tekram DC-390U2W and U3W SCSI cards with
no problem. I have not used the 315, but there is a Linux driver on
the Tekram site if you don't find one in the kernel sources.

You can also try www.lsilogic.com and pick the 'Host Bus Adapter link'
and then 'SCSI HBA'. Drivers are available in the kernel source for
just about all of these adapter. They use the NCR53c8xx chips or
newer variations of those. They may be a little more expensive buying
from this site, but I don't think you will have any problem getting
them to work.

about any PCI controller will be able to keep it's channel filled, and

I see Adaptec has just about driven everyone else out of business, but
