Re: how to buy an ideal laptop RAM module?

2013-01-15 Thread vishnu vardhan
The answer to this appears to be a large part of the problem.

Vardhan, if you get the memory you are going to have to open the laptop up to
install it. So, since you are going to have to do it anyway to install
anything, why not pluck up courage and open it up now, and count how many
 memory slots there are?

yes, at last i did open the box and found 1 ram installed in bottom.
the slots are exactly same as shown in the youtube video :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3btjMzE3kA

i have contacted toshiba i am stumped by their reply :

3.The RAM can be extended up to 8 GB in your laptop. Hence, you
need to contact to the service center regarding the same.

4.The Ram details :- 204-Pin DDR3 SODIMM PC3-10600 (1333Mhz) with 1.5v

This indicates that the RAM capacity of your laptop is already utilized.
What lets you think it can use 8 gb of RAM?

hi Jörg-Volker,
the toshiba website link clearly states 8 gb ram :

now i am confused a lot.
from the wordings of you, i am confused a lot worried a bit too.

facts:
i have recently purchased a laptop. it is shipped with 2gb ram. the

i want to replace 2gb ram with 2 4gb ram modules.
i did ask once in chat about the ram, and a person has given me an
idea about what type of ram i should purchase.
the laptop manufacturer did not provided any cd or manual.
so far so good.
i want to buy only kingston [btw, you can also recommend or suggest to
a novice like me other than kingston].

there are no mdoules available in indian online shopping websites.
i have also contacted my laptop manufacturer through email phone,
and they have no idea ??!!?

how to umount a usb flash drive through cli as a normal user

2010-10-12 Thread vishnu vardhan
i have installed debian 5.0.5 on virtualbox. i am learning about how to live
without a desktop environment. i have installed fluxbox and trying to
familiarise with it. i use usb flash drive almost on daily basis, plugging
in and out atleast four times. i did not installed any GUI file manager. i
am using mc and so far it is damn excellent.

i have installed pmount to minimise use of root account. upon reading the
man page of pmount, i have installed ntfs-3g.

to mount the usb flash drive :

[a] start mc and search for jet under /dev/disk/by-id folder and note down
the name, for e.g. sdb1

[b] $ pmount /dev/sdb1

the above command is mounting the usb flash drive properly. to umount the
flash drive :
# umount /dev/sdb1

i hope the above command is correct. but there is an issue.

in /media/ folder there are folders of my previous mounts, today i have
mounted flash drive 2 times. there are two folders /sdb1 and /sdc1. even
after rebooting the system they are present.

so i have basically the following inquiries :

[1] how to umount a usb flash drive without leaving any trace ?
[2] how can i automatically mount a usb flash drive ?
[3] how do i umount a flash drive as a normal user ?

thank you.

This is a bit tangential, but do you know about the pmount-hal
command? It basically uses HAL to work out a name for the mount point
(eg. /media/My USB Drive instead of /media/usb0), and automatically
works out some other mount flags for you. Keep in mind I use Squeeze,
not Lenny, so if it's not there, that's why.

 Cheers,
 Jason

strangely, there is no usb entry in /media/. there are only entries of
cdrom, cdrom0, sdb1 sdc1. both sdb1 sdc1 are directories and they have a
file created by pmount. if i try with only sdb it is showing error of wrong
fs type.

today only i re-read your reply. it seems i have missed pmount-hal command.
i will let you know my experience with command in another 24 hours.

I have the following issues and provide some suggestions for the below

issue 1 : no Desktop directory for newly created user :

I have this issue earlier also while installing Debian on my machine.
These are the following steps I took at the time of installation :
[a] install base system
[b] boot into the system and installed lxde.
[c] boot into the system with lxde and unable to find directory folder.
[d] installed GNOME desktop environment and the issue is solved.
[e] purged almost every package related to GNOME.
[f] at present using the system with LXDE desktop environment.

if i open PCMan File Manager and in side pane the defaults are : usr home
folder, Desktop and hard drive volume info. But the Desktop is missing in
the new user and i am also not able to create any files in desktop folder.

I have used the following command to create a new user :
# adduser tmp

provided passwd and details as requested by the command.
shutdown the system with the command : # shutdown 0
booted and directly logged into new user tmp and the desktop folder is
missing.

i have observed at the time of creating new user and read the man page of

unable to install mysql server

2010-03-18 Thread vishnu vardhan
OS : Debian Lenny 5.0.4
mysql server and client versions : packages from stable.

I have previously installed mysql-server and mysql-client.
I have tried to delete the files left in the system except of /var/ folder.
I have deleted the /etc/mysql/ folder using the command rm -r /etc/mysql/.
After a couple of days, I am unable to install mysql server and client.
It is showing the following error's :

What is the best way to install mysql server and client in my system ?
Previously I have deleted the files and folders in /etc/ folder and I have
to reinstall the OS from scratch.
Is there any way to again install package even if we delete the folder in
/etc/ ?

I am looking forward for your guidance or assistance.

thank you,
sid.

This is what I have done :

i have installed the mysql server and client.

Then I have issued the following commands :
# aptitude remove --purge mysql-server mysql-client
# updatedb
# rm -r /etc/mysql/

After a couple of days, I have tried to install the packages again.
It has shown an error as i have mentioned in my first e-mail.

Re: Installation of packages from backports, unstable and stable.

2010-01-27 Thread vishnu vardhan
After installing Openoffice, I commented out lines of backports.
When I have installed transmission, I did not commented out lines of
backports.
Normally, I install the packages with the following command :
aptitude install package.

Freeman | there is no apt.conf file at /etc/apt/.
However the following files are located at /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/ :
00trustcdrom 15update-stamp 70debconf
01autoremove 20archive 99update-notifier
10periodic 50unattended-upgrades

I tried to install amarok, but it is showing various conflicts.
I have decided not to install unstable or any other packages for that
matter.
I am satisfied with the Debian as it is.

Thank u for all of your replies.

These are tricks to fool APT.

Not fool. Apt, by default, treats all remote repositories in one of two
manners get every package from there (priority 500) or get only the
packages I request from there (priority 1 -- backports and experimental).

Using pinning, you can communicate to apt your actual preferences of
repositories. In my case, try to get all packages from
stable+security+volatile, but if you need them to satisfy dependencies or I
request a specific version you can pull from backports,
testing+volatile+security, unstable, and experimental in that order.

These do not solve the package version
dependency issue. If it happen to be running, you are just lucky.

Apt/aptitude will try as much as possible to make sure the various
dependencies of all installed packages are satisfied. If they fail, you
 could
be in trouble. If they succeed but something still breaks, you are unlucky
 (please file a bug).

Preferences don't solve package dependency issues in isolation, but
 aptitude
can use the priorities when ranking it's solutions and deciding which
 packages
to upgrade. Once you start pulling in packages from
testing/unstable/experimental, you will have to execute a full-upgrade more
often, and provide a bit a manual guidance to aptitude, but that's to be
 expected.

If you can locally backport package, you should try it to be safe.

I don't like doing this because I don't like having to provide my own
 security
 support.

 If
not, it is best not to do this kind of mixed system to avoid problem.

Having run a mixed desktop and 2 mixed servers since before Lenny was
released, I disagree with this statement. It allows the packages whose
development I'm not currently following is remain dependable (pulled from
stable or at least testing) while letting me pull packages with new, shiny
features that I must try from unstable or experimental.

I really do find it to be a best-of-both-worlds situation. My
 configuration
 is documented at http://iguanasuicide.net/node/4.

Installation of packages from backports, unstable and stable.

2010-01-26 Thread vishnu vardhan
OS : Lenny 5.0.3

I have installed openoffice from backports and transmission-gtk from
unstable.

I have read a couple of articles about installing packages from stable,
unstable, etc.. and pinning of packages.

My sources.list entries are as follows :
deb http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ lenny main contrib non-free
#deb http://www.backports.org/debian lenny-backports main contrib non-free
#deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian unstable main non-free contrib

After I have installed transmission-gtk, I commented out the line of
unstable.
I did not created /etc/spt/preference file. I am still averse to pinning of
packages.

Do I need to create a prefernce file ? and is it compulsory ?
Are there any more lines need to be added to sources.list file ?
If I did not create the preference file, and if I update the system [
apt-get update, apt-get upgrade ] will any issues crop up ?
If I pin my packages, what word should I use for backports. e.g. Pin:
release a=testing.

Please guide me.

thank u,
vishnuvardhan.
