Help! Thunderbird lost my passwords
I installed tbird 78.12.0 (64-bit) and it can't find my email passwords. I have browsed signons.sqlite and the passwords seem to be there in the middle of the db. I have tried to install a prior version of tbird but dpkg has thwarted those efforts so far! Any other ideas suggestions would be appreciated! Many TIA!Dennis

LVM Recovery
I had a drive crash and it had a little bit of a LVM volume on it. The drive that contains most of it still survives. Can anyone quickly outline what to do to get the survivor attached to LVM and working again? LVM has completely forgotten about it. TIA! unzip -a strange behavior
Greetings; I regularly use the -a option in unzip to fix DOS/Windows line endings and have never had a problem. Until yesterday and today! Today it treated everything as a binary file and all the text/ascii files still had ^M at the end of each line. Yesterday it treated a pdf file as a text file and it was unreadable! Any ideas as to what is wrong here? Many TIA! Dennis -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact listmas...@lists.debian.org

Help - Gnome won't rune
Greetings; My system hung and I had to reset it. Now gnome won't come up when I boot. I get a screen that has a little window in it that says something about it can't find a system with XDMCP(?) running. I have tried giving it the address of my machine in every form I can think of to no avail. I can get a command line window with ctl-alt-F1 so I probably could fix it if I knew what to do. Any ideas? Many TIA! Dennis -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
What's the best way to get from stable to testing?
Greetings; It seems that the testing dist has more good stuff in it than stable, but how do I upgrade? I tried doing a network install but neither of the choices to build init.rd worked, so that was a few hours wasted. I have a working install of stable/sarge running. Can I start from there somehow, or is that even more involved and lengthy? Oh yeah. When I get to that point, which kernel do I choose? I have a P4 but I have no idea which to use except for 386. Many thanks, again! Dennis -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: How to: Mount NTFS filesystems RW
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Dennis G. Wicks wrote: Greetings; I am dual booting my desktop and most everything is working fine. But, I can't get to my Win 2k disks unless I am logged on as root. The arg line in fstab specifies rw, but they are mounted ro for root only! Note: since Windows is not running they aren't smb or exported. I really don't like to run as root because I make a lot of typos, some of which could be disastrous! Here is what happens: (Notice I am root right now.) /dev/hda1 on /cdrv type ntfs (rw,uid=0,gid=100) [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/# chmod a+rx /cdrv chmod: changing permissions of `/cdrv': Read-only file system [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/# And everything is still 400 or 600. Nothing changes. Any suggestions?? Many TIA! Dennis As others have suggested you might want to try ntfs-3g, but I can explain why only root can see the files. The uid=0 is setting it to root only access. Change it to uid=1000 or whatever id that your user has, or just remove it (and the gid as well). This line will work (in /etc/fstab) /dev/hda1 /cdrv ntfs auto,users,exec,ro,umask=0 0 0 without ntfs-3g and give you read only access to it, which is the safest way. Note the auto,users,exec,ro,umask=0 That means, automount the partitions, allow users to use it and make it read and execute (if it were rw, then it would also allow writing). Personally, I don't recommend even using ntfs partitions at all. Joe - -- Joe; Thanks, that is a perfect solution to my problem. Esp. since I am not having much luck getting ntfs-3g installed and running. Read-only is all I really need, so that will work well. I am not using ntfs because I can but because after more than 10 years of using Windows we probably have nearly 500 gig of data accumulated. It is backed up, but no way is it going to get copied or converted to Linux any time soon! We will probably be exploring the capabilities of wine quite extensivly. (software and beverage both I imagine!) BTW. I notice you are using Icedove. How to you like it? I have been using Tbird for quite awhile and need a good Linux product. Many thanks! How can I force a clean reinstall of xfree86?
Greetings; Before I do the Windows thing of a complete reinwtall of the system for the fourth time, can anybody tell me how to do this? There is something wrong and the xserver won't come up. All it says is I cannot start the X server and some other general stuff. I have tried running dpkg-reconfigure xfree86 several times but somthing is not getting completely reset because I still have the same problem. I also tried doing a --forcereinstall with apt-get and that didn't do the trick either. Anybody know how to force a full reinstall? qmail install help!!!
Hello everyone! By now I'm rather pissed off. I managed to install qmail 1.03 on my potato and when it comes to the point where I want to start the local delivery functionality, the log says some about unable to switch to queue directory... -and then I tried almost everything. read docs, faqs... searched geocrawler, found out that the debian mailinglist-search engine doesn't work (or doesn't work in a way that a reasonable man would expect something like this to do), tried google, followed all possible steps, but still this message. Has anyone been able to get this running in such a configuration? this big hassle just to get an MTA to operation can't be the pride of anyone. I'm desperate and caught me even considering to switch to xchange... nice mouseclicking :-| Thanx for reading anyways, gratitude for help Gerald -- Machen Sie Ihr Hobby zu Geld bei unserem Partner 11! http://profiseller.de/info/index.php3?ac=OM.PS.PS003K00596T0409a -- GMX - Die Kommunikationsplattform im Internet. http://www.gmx.net
