After changing two hamm boxes to my first 2.1.x kernels (2.1.106), I find that there is no mention in /lib/modules/2.1.106/modules.dep of a dependency on 8390.o by ne.o. It just shows:-
/lib/modules/2.1.106/net/ne.o: instead of:_ /lib/modules/2.1.106/net/ne.o: /lib/modules/2.1.106/net/8390.o If I add the dependency by hand the ne module loads just fine. But if I then run depmod -a again I am back to square 1. I guess I have missed something along the way.
