Some time ago I had a similar problem. It was caused by the order in
which the sound devices in my system were recognized by ALSA. All I had
to do to solve it was create an appropriate .asoundrc in ~. Afterwards I
found out you can use asoundconf to do this for you.

ALSA keeps going away

2005-12-21 Thread John and Holly Klug
Every time I run alsaconf, ALSA comes back. When I reboot, it goes
away. Sounds from the gnome desktop always work fine.

I tried manually doing alsactl store as suggested in the archives, but
it did not help.

I have driver cs46xx, which I have manually put in /etc/modules, since
the hotplug package says I must, since it is blacklisted.

The gnome sound effects on the desktop work fine, and the driver loads
fine although the boot says initially that the driver is disabled.

There is no entry in /proc/asound/ for my card after booting, but it is
there just fine after running alsaconf again.

I have debian stable with kernel 2.6.8-2-386 and 1.0.8-7 alsa-base.
