Um - I've never heard of an Athalon either :-)

In 2 MB of ROM, IIRC, and in that you get a complete full-featured GUI and
command line OS, with an editor, plus BBC Basic 5 interpreter (a very
comprehensive Basic) with built-in assembler.Acorn code is *very* compact!

I believe someone has started making something similar again. I'll have to
do some more research, though.

Exactly! I love Acorn machines and I don't think I would have gone into IT
without the exposure to them that I had at a young age. I still own a
BBC B, A3000, A5000 and RiscPC (with 200Mhz StrongARM and RiscOS 3.5). The
RiscPC was an awesome creation with it's dual processors (and one of
them didn't even have to be a native processor!).

Shame that they stopped making machines :-(

According to the ARM part of the debian website (That someone pointed
out to me earlier), debian doesn't yet run on the A5000 unfortunately.
I'd be tempted to try anyway, if I can work out how.

As for backing up first. I thought you migth be interested to know that
Risc OS is entirely ROM based and can run with or without a hard disk.
So other than personal files (of which I don't have any :-) ) there is
nothing to back up. :-)

Thanks. I read someone elses post stating "Google is your friend". I
tried "debian"+"A5000" and found the page you mention below.

Ah well. Looks like I'll have to go back to trying Arm Linux. It's a
shame because most of the downlaods (for A5000) appear to have
vanished. :-(

Thanks.

I've heard of Debian running on similar hardware. Give the ARM port a
try. I don't have any ARM hardware so I haven't tried it myself, but
I'm reasonably sure it should run. Back up what you have first in
case it doesn't.

Right now, I'm waiting for the SuperH port to stabilize and get an
installer so I can give it a go on my LG Phenom Ultra (PDA currently
running wince 2, almost full sized keyboard, half height VGA display,
PCMCIA, sound and a winmodem built in...not sure what the storage
specs are off the top of my head. Runs on a Hitachi SuperH 3
processor).

In this particular case, that doesn't really apply. An Acorn (note the
spelling) A5000 is a very specific machine which uses an ARM (Acorn RISC
Machine) CPU and comes with a slightly Mac-like GUI (KDE has a theme based on
its look & feel) and an operating system called RiscOS. It's no sort of
x86 clone.Generally, all A5000's are virtually identical, about the only
changes made to them may have been that the hard drives may have been
replaced by bigger ones. They're about the age of 386's but tend to be
even more rock-solid reliable than Linuxboxes. So if Debian has been ported
to run on one A5000 it will run on 'em all, hard drive space permitting, and
'A5000' is an adequate description.

However, RiscOS code is extremely compact, and whether Linux can do anything
useful in 4MB of RAM I'm not sure.

This is quite unlike the mix-n-match situation with regard to x86's.

Only if you can answer me this:

Does your current OS install on my Yoyodyne 75/20A4500 Mark II? 8:o)

You're probably wondering what the heck I'm talking about and
questinging Yoyodyne's existance right now. Well, you confused us
similarly. If you give us more specific information, we should be
able to tell you.

For example, my computer is...

AMD Athalon XP 2100+
100GB Western Digital Caviar WD1000BB hard drive
20GB Western Digital Caviar WD200EB hard drive
629MB RAM
Generic ATAPI DVD-ROM
Teac CD-W512EB CDRW burner
D-Link DFE-538TX ethernet adapter
SoundBlaster Live!
Soyo KT-333 Dragon Lite motherboard

This kind of information should be enough for most hardware people to
give you a ballpark figure on whether or not things will work. Be
prepared to break the motherboard description down to chipsets if it's
an obscure one that nobody here has heard of or tried.

I hope this is enough to get you started.

Hi All

I'm new to this list and I am hoping someone can answer a quick
straight forward question for me. I have looked on the website and did
try the archives, but there doesn't seem to be a way to do a global
search...?

Anyway, can someone tell me if I can install Debian on my Acron A5000,
please?

Thanks!
