(saying > this after reading some posts on the nexus threads on xda-developers) When I tried gmtp, it did work, but cd'ing into a directory took a long time (some 30 to 60 seconds) and lots of error messages showed up in the xterm where it was started from. But the tweaks you mention are likely to improve this. I then installed Software Data Cable in Android, so I could access the device's files via ftp (I used gftp) without a USB cable but through WiFi, and that worked very well and extremely fast, so I haven't looked back at MTP. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". While not a direct answer to the question, you can easily move files from/to android phone using FTP. FTP server can be on your pc or phone. Works either way. Android 2.x still works with normal USB. MTP was invented by Microsoft, so it only works directly in Windows. For both Linux and OSX, a program is needed to transfer files via MTP. For Debian there is gmtp, which is easiest. There's also mtp-tools, requiring more study. But there are other ways to transfer files that may work better. You can install AirDroid in Android. In that case I'm stumped. Sorry I can't help you any further. I think, as someone mentioned above, that MTP is only used to transfer files that contain media. So maybe thats the reason that its not mounting. Tomorrow I will try to connect my phone to another distro and will report if all files are visible there or not. Thanks for the help though. This is probably intentional. MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) is designed for transferring digital media between systems. Looking at the wikipedia page, it seems perfectly reasonable that the android device is only showing you paths where it believes it has media files (as indexed by the "Media Storage" service, probably). As to why windows sees it differently to linux, I'm not sure. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Of course, make sure you use the correct device sdb, sdc or ... If any folders start with a . (dot) then maybe nautilus treats them as hidden? BTW, I don't use a DE. So I can help with that side of it. -- "If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing." --- Malcolm X -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe".
