Not sure if you're looking for cli or ncurses.
I always just do:
nmcli dev wifi # list APs)
nmcli con essid password password
That assumes networkmanager - I'm sure installer probably uses iwlist
dev scan and then either iwconfig or wpa_supplicant/wpa_passphrase
though.
