Others have given you useful answers, but in terms of process, you
should be trying something like this:

~$ apt-cache search courier | grep font

[The apt / cli gurus can doubtless come up with better versions.]

https://www.ctan.org/pkg/courier
The font is in Adobe's Postscript Type 1 format, but IBM is listed as
copyright holder and maintainer.

Wikipedia also seems to agree with IBM having released a Type 1 Courier:

How did you obtain that information? AFAICS, the Courier fonts in
TeXlive are the Adobe and URW variants.

That's right, sorry I wasn't clear on this.
What I meant was, that this is the font that is
 a) Actually named plain 'Courier'
 b) The texlive Courier fonts are the digitalised version released by
IBM themselves under some free font license

Well as 'Courier' as used by texlive was released by IBM, who commissioned the
original Courier font, you could make an argument that 'Courier' is somehow
more authentic than the others ;) . Not that this matters much as long as you
get a font that is to liking in appearance and usage rights.

The original Courier font was physical. All the files we have nowadays
are variants / reimplementation, and Courier New is not less authentic
than the others.

My copy of the Courier font was installed by 'texlive-fonts-recommended'.
If you want 'Courier 10pitch' instead of the original Courier, you need the
package 'xfonts-scalable'.

The ttf-mscorefonts package from contrib mentioned before, does *not* seem to
contain the original Courier font, only Microsoft's variant 'Courier New'.

In case you *did* mean MS's 'Courier New' instead of 'Courier':
If you need to view documents with Microsoft's Courier New , Arial or Times New
Roman and you don't care about the fonts specifically, only that formatting
is right, you can replace them with free metric-compatible fonts:
Either (Arimo, Cousine and Tinos) from fonts-croscore or the Liberation font
family from fonts-liberation. These packages are in main.
Most programs seem to pick them up as replacements automatically, if
installed. In case this doesn't work you can alias them in your fontconfig
configuration.

You could try:

$ fc-match -v courier # fontconfig returns the font file
$ dpkg -S fontfile # the debian package that installed it

On my system this tells me that courier is part of the gsfonts
package.

There are several - of variable quality.

$ apt-cache search courier

If you plan to use it as a screen font, you could give ttf-liberation a
shot.

If you are only interested in Eglish or a like: ttf-dejavi-core

But if you wish to see more CJK characters too, you should think about
installing:

ttf-liberation contains a monospaced Truetype font which is fully

You should learn how to use the Debian tools.

1. Install the apt-cache package.
2. Read the apt-cache man file ie man apt-cache.

There is no package in Debian called 'apt-cache'. There is a program

No doubt others on this list who are more familiar with fonts (and their

Courier fonts are available (somehow) via the Debian repositories.
Possibly I have them because of the package called 'ttf-mscorefonts-

He may have meant apt-file.

ttf-mscorefonts-installer installs Courier New along with a few other
MS fonts so the Debian tools may not be that helpful in this
particular case since the fonts are installed by the package rather
than by apt/dpkg.

Gnome courier font is invisible except at 14pt

2004-10-20 Thread chris-usenet
I'm running gnome on debian sarge, as provided by apt-get and friends.

My gnome Courier font appears to render as invisible text at every
pointsize apart from 14. The text can be copied and pasted, but it cannot
be viewed. This is particularly annoying for me because a lot of websites
use courier as their preferred monospace font.

If I plug in courier as the font family in xfontsel, it offers 292
matching names, but suggests that there are only two relevant foundries:
Adobe and Bitstream. I can't see any obvious anomalies there.

I suspect that this Courier font is actually from my Windows partition
(I also have Courier New and Courier 10 Pitch, and both of these
render correctly), so I'd be happy to delete this Courier font provided
I could replace it (maybe with an alias from Courier New). However,
I'm not sure I know how to approach this.

Any suggestions anyone, please?

Thanks,
Chris
