Re: FAT32 e Compactador DOS<->Linux

Fala Lindalvo,

o negocio eh o seguinte: O Linux soh consegue acessar volumes FAT32
a partir do kernel 2.2.x, e o seu Slack deve estar com o 2.0.x, neh? OK,

maxima ;-).

Newbie installation troubles -dos/linux

1999-06-08 Thread vw
Hi Debians
I'm still in the process of installing. I managed to mount the dos-partition
in dselect, but now it wants the exact folder-structure to be copied on the
dos-partition in order to install. The problem is: I can't make a folder
called "binary-i386" because dos will only allow 8 characters in filenames.
Is this a catch-22 situation?
Would it be possible for me to have Linux read a zip-file set from the
disk-drive in order to install the files directly to the Linux-portion of
the hd? If so, how? (the Linux box hasn't got a cd-drive, neither a
ppp-connection).
Regards, and thanx for your patience...

mount -t msdos /dev/ /mnt

For example, I have a ms-dos partiton on my first partition of my first IDE
drive, so I use
mount -t msdos /dev/hda1 /mnt

You can also add it to your fstab and it is automatically mounted when you
boot linux. For your modem access in Linux, I suggest minicom. It's a lot
like telix.

tar (Tape ARchive) and gzip/gunzip(GNU) are included on the base Debian
installation.

For connecting two systems, you have several chioces.
1)SLIP(Serial Null-modem) See HOWTO for SLIP/PPP.
2)PLIP(Parallel Null-modem-equivalent) Rumored to be quicker. Less
support. See HOWTO for PLIP.
3)Network (I've seen a two NE200 card/cable/terminator kit for $80 for
ISA $90 for PCI) See Network Administrator's Guide(NAG).

If you have dos and linux on the same computer, mount your dos partition
(something like mount /dev/hda1 /mnt with some parameters which can be checked
with a man mount command). Here, /dev/hda1 is your dos C: partition. Then, any
binary file within the dos partition can be *read* by linux. It works with any
binary data file (bmp, tar.gz files).

It supports TCP/IP in version 7 out of the box, and the TCP/IP is
available for older versions, but I would recommend version 7 anyway.

Matthew -

The program you need is MSCLIENT. I have attached a description of
how to use it which was posted to the Samba List. I have not tried
the MSCLIENT but use WfWg clients with a SMB server on a HP 9000
system for print and file sharing - works great. I consider GNU,
Linux and Samba the absolutely "best" software available.

This small help file is to make a booteable floppy that has MS CLIENT to
access a Samba Server.
I received help in this mailing list to make it work, and here is what I
have done. I hope it helps somebody else.

1)- Install MSCLIENT 3.0 in a DOS hard drive.

2)- Copy the next files into a DOS formated 3 1/2 floppy:

LANtastic will connect to a "lan manager" or "wfwg" server, which is what
SAMBA "is".

Re: DOS <--> Linux

1996-11-27 Thread Bruce Perens
There is indeed a MS "DOS for Workgroups" product. You need Microfoft's
free TCP/IP stack from their FTP site on top of this.

If you have 8MB and at least a 486 on the client systems, run Windows 95
on them and boot it in DOS mode most of the time. You'd really only have
to boot Windows mode to do configuration. It's a lot easier to find all
of the pieces that way, since they are all on the Win 95 CD, and they
are newer versions. Most of the work of running WFWG was getting all of
the parts together.

I believe (though I haven't done it myself) that there is a DOS component of
WFWG which you can run without Windows to allow use of WFWG networked drives
and printers. I believe that you can access this using the

net /start

command which starts the WFWG networking before you actually run Windows. I
had a friend who set a bunch of 286's up to a 486 like this a while ago. I
think the service is called workstation or something similar. Look at the
options for the net command.
