Re: Debian 8, KDE Lockup
Is there an alternative to KDE Connect elsewhere? Is there a non-KDE substitute that makes it easy to create a WiFi hotspot/access point connection? (NetworkManager cannot do this in non-KDE environments in Debian. It can under GNOME in Fedora.) -- Udyant Wig

My ram did not arrive today so to help rule out hardware problems I reinstalled Debian 8 but this time used the LXDE desktop. Everything works fine as I had hoped the first attempt would. LXDE looks pretty nice so I will probably keep it and not worry about KDE. Thank you for your help everyone. Tim
Re: Debian 8, KDE Lockup
I had the same problem starting up KDE with a new installation of Debian 8 with gdm as the selected display manager. In addition to that, there where GUI error messages that would pop up and disappear, but only when switching between desktops. Replacing gdm with LightDM as the display manager, uninstalling KDE, and then re-installing KDE from the appropriate repository (stretch) solved those problems. Running a 2010 Samsung laptop with 6G ram, nvidia optimus card. Never figured out what caused the problem. Andrea

Yes, and after getting it working, didn't care for KDE anyway and uninstalled it. Now it's just Xfce, dwm, and cinammon. Andrea

I'm not able to determine this right now. Since I already have memory on order I plan to wait until it arrives and try again before I invest more time. Thanks for the suggestions so far! Tim
