Sorry to bother you yet again. Actually shadow passwords are not
enabled on the server. I added myself to pap-secrets by hand and it
still said pap authentication failed!

My pap-secrets file reads

# Every regular user can use PPP and has to use passwords from /etc/passwd
*   yodeller""
hamish yodeller"password"

# UserIDs that cannot use PPP at all. Check your /etc/passwd and add any
# other accounts that should not be able to use pppd!
guest yodeller"*" -
master yodeller"*" -
rootyodeller"*" -
support yodeller"*" -
stats yodeller"*" -

# OUTBOUND connections

# Here you should add your userid password to connect to your providers via
# pap. The * means that the password is to be used for ANY host you connect
# to. Thus you do not have to worry about the foreign machine name. Just
# replace password with your password.
# If you have different providers with different passwords then you better
# remove the following line.

yodeller* password

It seems to open and read the pap-secrets file ok (I ran it with strace
as you suggested) but still does not work.

Your config files look good to me. You might want to try 'strace'ing
the pppd process to see if it's actually opening /etc/shadow. Make
sure you have the strace package. Edit your login.config and change
the AutoPPP entry to:

/AutoPPP/ - - /usr/bin/strace -o/tmp/pppd.out /usr/sbin/pppd auth
+pap login

Then try to dial in to the box. You can check /tmp/pppd.out to see if
it really did open the file and check for the password.

I did this. Well, I enabled auth, +pap, login and modem
in /etc/ppp/options because I have two lines with different IP
addresses obviously. However when someone tries to authenticate
with PAP they get access denied. I've included the output
of syslog for this below with debugging enabled on ppp.
(I did set up /etc/ppp/options.ttyS0 and .ttyS1 files).

I do have shadow passwords enabled. The changelog
for ppp (which is 2.2.0f-26 from hamm as of just now,
previously 2.2.0f-23) indicates shadow passwords are supported.

Any assistance appreciated.

The plot thickens. When an NT user dials up, pppd says it is
being run by root and that PAP authentication for user x failed.
When I dial up with linux pppd, pppd says it is being
run by user hamish, and that the peer refused to authenticate itself.
My chatscript to dialup just waits for CONNECT then leaves,
allowing pppd to do its stuff. The ppp log says the peer requested
termination. It looks like my end already authenticated itself
to mgetty, and pppd wants it again. The mgetty log still
says "User=/AutoPPP/" though. Weird.

Ideas?

Hamish

Hmmm. Weird. I've used pppd with shadow passwords but this was a bo
system, not hamm. You did say your system has hamm, not bo, right?
just for kicks maybe you should try hand-entering the user/password
into /etc/ppp/pap-secrets. Otherwise everything looks good.

pppd will work out the IP address your box has on its local network.
For instance, the dialin server at work is called prgsrv1 and has an
/etc/hosts entry:

192.168.17.35 prgsrv1.pacific-retail.co.nz prgsrv1

So pppd will set the address of the local end to 192.168.17.35, and
the remote IP address to Y.Y.Y.Y (from /etc/mgetty/login.config). The
addresses used should be logged in /var/log/ppp.log.

If you're just using 127.0.0.1, you'll need to pick an address (under
192.168.?.?) and use that.

Well if mgetty's working right, you should see something like:

dialout ttyS0/usr/sbin/pppd f Tue Sep 16 23:13 - 23:20 (00:07)

in the output of `last -20' if you dialout with the same modem
(ttyS0/COM1 in this case) you will have users connecting on. Does
this happen?

I haven't come across that one - what does the error message say?

What do you get in /var/log/mgetty/mg_ttyS0.log? You should see
something like:

09/18 19:01:47 yS0 mgetty: experimental test release 1.1.2-Feb20
09/18 19:24:41 # data dev=ttyS0, pid=15577, caller=none,

if it's working right (and you have the same amount of logging as me).
/var/log/ppp.log should then be something like:

Sep 18 19:24:41 prgsrv1 pppd[15577]: pppd 2.2.0 started by root, uid 0
Sep 18 19:24:41 prgsrv1 pppd[15577]: Using interface ppp1

Can they get a shell login by just dialing the number from minicom (or
hyperterminal on Win95)?

Also check /var/log/auth.log to see if there are problems with
passwords or something.

Yes...my modem works fine...i use linux to connecting to internet.

I think that mgetyy answerbut it return me an "TIO" errorwhat's
that error?

When an user intent log in, the modem answer but then hang and
disconnect...thus nobody can login.

Does your phone line ring?  Does the modem notice (AA light flashes;
RING gets printed if you're in minicom)? Does the modem itself answer
(it shouldn't)? Does mgetty notice (check the log files in
/var/log/mgetty/)? Does mgetty answer? Does pppd get started? Can
you (or anyone) dial in and get a normal terminal login?

Is the modem set up correctly? Try something like:

AT&F
ATW0
ATZ

in minicom, to set and save the factory defaults.

As some folks here know, I have a fairly complete page for either
mgetty or portslave setup. http://www.buoy.com/isp

Do you have the doc-linux package installed? Look at

file:/usr/doc/HOWTO/PPP-HOWTO.gz

in this case (using zless or by clicking the URL).

If you want to use ISDN you should also consult

file:/usr/doc/HOWTO/mini/PPP-over-ISDN.gz

You can find the doc-linux package in the doc section of your Debian
distribution.

Depending how many users you want to server try checking out
Portslave at http://homepage.cistron.nl/~miquels/radius/ I found it to be
an excellent program and fairly self-documenting. We're using it as a
temp solution until PRI prices drop here in BC Canada and we order our
PM3's.

This should really be added as documentation to the mgetty/ppp packages.

 o get/install mgetty package

 o get/install ppp package

o make sure kernel has ppp support, if it doesn't then get kernel
source and recompile with ppp support

 o edit /etc/mgetty/login.config
find the line starting with '/AutoPPP/' and modify it so that it
looks something like this:

/AutoPPP/ - - /usr/sbin/pppd auth +pap login modem :Y.Y.Y.Y

where Y.Y.Y.Y is what you want the caller's IP address to be.

o add entry in /etc/inittab for like this:

S0:23:respawn:/sbin/mgetty -s 38400 /dev/ttyS0

(if the modem is on your first serial port)

o as root run 'kill -HUP 1'

   o enjoy!
