Re: Re: Re: Dovecot duplicating emails
Hi guys, after a lot of grief and a bit of experimenting around, I think I have now found a (the?) solution. I was missing the package inotify-tools on my system. I came across it reading about dovecot using inotify on Linux systems. After installation of this package, my email duplication issue went away (~24 hours running now). No other installs were done. (Debian Etch ungraded from Sarge, still using dovecot1.0.0-1~bpo.1 (dovecot-common and dovecot-imap) on Intel hardware with IDE disk and ext3, Maildirs in home directories. Maildirs fairly large with several GB) So the question is: should the dovecot package have the inotify package as a dependency? Alexander Just to summarise what I have found: qmail was repeat delivering email to the Maildirs. Each delivery was reported as deferral: Temporary_error_on_maildir_delivery._(#4.3.0)/ in the qmail log. But while the message already existed in copy in the Maildir it was not removed from the qmail queue and so qmail would try again according to its redelivery schedule, causing the same error as above. I found that when stopping dovecot (safer than just closing the mail reader) the mails eventually did get delivered one last time and properly to the Maildir with the qmail queue flushed. Thanks to anyone who helped. Alexander -- - Alexander Banthien - -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Dovecot duplicating emails
Hi all, I have recently switched my Debian etch (with qmail using Maildir) from CourierIMAP to Dovecot for use with Windows XP Thunderbird 2.0.0.x clients. . The migration seemed to go OK at first but I soon realised that I suddenly had an email duplication issue: Almost all (not quite all) emails that arrive and sit in the Inbox get copied and appear 2x, 3x . . the longer I leave it the more copies I get. This happens only to emails received during a Thunderbird session. If I shut TBird down and restart, only the emails received after the restart will be affected. I also have a squirrelmail installed but that is not able to show my inbox at all (maybe because there are almost 3000 messages in it) so I can't say whether another IMAP client causes the same mess. There are only two accounts on that machine, both fairly large. (one is 3.5 GB in over 20 messages) Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. I have failed to find anything relevant on the net so far. There seems to have been an issue with Dovecot and POP3/Outlook, but that is not anything I am using. Thanks Alexander -- - Alexander Banthien - -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Are you using Dovecot from etch or a version from backports.org? I suggest you use the latter since etch's version has known problems. (I haven't heard of this problem, though.) Still, I am having trouble to imagine how Dovecot might responsible for this strange behaviour. I'd try another client and see whether the problem persists. Another point-of-failure might lie in your mail delivery program. How are mails delivered to your maiboxes? J. -- People talking a foreign language are romantic and mysterious. Re: Re: Dovecot duplicating emails
Hi Jochen, thanks for getting back to me. I know it is strange, and that is probably the reason why I cannot find any relevant info on the net. The only thing noticeable in the first few days were messages in the log where Dovecot was complaining about corrupted index files. But after removing the broken ones and letting Dovecot recreate them that has gone away. I started with the etch version but switched to the backports version two days ago (1.0.0-1~bpo.1) Same results. Qmail is delivering the messages to the Maildir. I am not using Dovecot's LDA deliver. Do you think that might be worth a try? I'll see if I can get squirrelmail back into working order. I did try with Debian's Thunderbird (iceweasel) but with the same result.
