Enabling laptop suspend

2013-06-17 Thread Lars Noodén
I've selected 'Laptop' in taskel and had it install the packages that go
with that selection. When I close the lid of the laptop, the screen
light goes out for a while but then seems to come back on after a minute
or two. How can I get it to go into sleep or hibernate mode
automatically when I shut the lid?

Regards,
/Lars

What laptop model do you have? Various machines have special needs.
I have ThinkPads and for the most part nothing special is needed
there.

What window manager or desktop session manager are you using? GNOME 2
used to have a configuration for sleeping when the lid is closed. I
don't know about GNOME 3 or XFCE or other but most would probably have
a configuration option to automatically sleep. Personally I prefer to
avoid those and only have the machine sleep when I explicitly tell it
to sleep using the keyboard action.

Usually there is a function key combination (for example Fn-F4,
perhaps different on your model) that will manually activate the sleep
function. Try that first. If that works then you are golden.

There is also the 'sleepd' package if you want the machine to
automatically go to sleep when idle for a configurable period of
time. I use it and am happy with the behavior.

The collected wisdom for Debian laptop suspend is here. Although it
is a little bit stale and could use some updating.
