Is this usual? Very frustrating and a lot of time wasted because of this

Is it usual to enforce a transparent proxy? As your ISP seems to be in
the UAE then I don't know, but in the UK it is less common that it used
to be (Telewest/Blueyonder cable were guilty at one time).

Presumably you need to somehow force a proxy refresh before getting the
update.

Etch updates contain new version of Vim?

2007-10-03 Thread BartlebyScrivener
Hello all,

I'm still fairly new to Debian (1yr). I'm using Etch. I update only
through the little asterisk alert that pops up on Gnome. I use
fluxbox, so only log into Gnome occasionally. Last time, there were
many updates, including updates to Vim which I work in a lot.

So I'm curious. I thought with Stable (Etch at the moment) the only
updates automatically installed are security updates. And when I
search the changelog, it does not mention Vim:

http://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/etch/ChangeLog

My sources are:

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian etch main
# deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian etch main
# deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org etch main

deb http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main
# deb-src http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ etch main non-free contrib
deb http://download.skype.com/linux/repos/debian/ stable non-free

So how did I get a new Vim under these circumstances?

Thanks for any explanation,

rd

There are two sources of updates:

(a) security updates, from security.debian.org
(b) updates to the stable release, such as etch r0, r1, r2.

Changes to the stable release occur relatively infrequently and include
all the security updates since the last release, along with (at the
stable release manager's discretion) fixes for particularly severe bugs.
Bugfixes are generally for things like the package doesn't work at all
that would be RC pre-release.
The stable release is what's used to produce official CD images, as a
reference point when discussing version numbers, etc. This is probably
what the Changelog you found refers to.

Security updates are published ASAP for obvious reasons. But they
aren't included in the main Debian archive, which contains the last
official stable release, since they aren't yet part of it. Instead
they're published from security.debian.org. As the other responder
to your message wrote, you can see Debian's security alerts at
http://security.debian.org .

proposed-updates is not recommended for end users. It is used by
developers to upload packages that *might* be considered for the next
stable point release. There is however no guarantee that these packages
will (or can) be accepted by the stable release managers. If they are
rejected you may end up with packages without security updates.

Sure. Etch is stable now. In an ideal world there will be no more
updates. In a real world, security issues will be discovered and fixed
and then there will be updates from security.debian.org.
