I'm not sure where you're looking, but it's pretty easy to find.

Go to http://www.debian.org/

Look in the menu at the left, and click the link "CD ISO Images"
You'll get here: http://www.debian.org/CD/

Everything you want is there. If you want to use FTP for download, find
the link "Download CD images using HTTP or FTP." That will get you to a
long list of mirrors, offering Debian CD ISO images for both HTTP and
FTP download, here: http://www.debian.org/CD/http-ftp/

Remember you don't need ALL the CDs. It's likely you'll need only the
first two, or even just the first one. Anything that's missing that you
want you can easily download over the Internet after your install is
complete.

See the FAQ link on this page, which takes you here:
http://www.debian.org/CD/faq/

Also, note if you don't want to bother with a long download you can buy
Debian CD's, often for very little money. I've had good experiences in
the past with this method, before I got my cable modem. Look here for
a list of possible vendors, by country: http://www.debian.org/CD/vendors/

If you have broadband access (or are willing to wait over dial-up), and
don't need a CD for multiple installs, you can just get the netinstall
CD; after installing a fairly minimal setup, it'll pull the rest of
what's needed off the net.

Alternatively, if you want a full CD, you can stop with the first CD, as
it'll have most of what you need. The CDs are arranged so that the more
popular packages are on the lower-numbered CDs. Once you get up to about
#5 (or 7? or whatever), you start getting the source code instead of the
binary packages. Unless you're going to be compiling your own stuff, you
probably don't want to bother getting these.

Dear Paul:

My sincere apologies. You won't believe what happened. When I
got to the CD image download page I didn't scroll down far
enough to see the FTP sites. Too embarrassing to mention. But
that's the honest truth. I've already started my download of the

Where is the FTP site for Sarge, please?

2005-07-11 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

After much consideration, I've decided to go with Sarge and
add the apt-get.org and backports.org sources to
/etc/apt/sources.list

This seems to me the wisest course of action. I will have the
benefit of Debian's reputation for perfection and reliability
plus updates of my favorite applications as needed through
apt-get.org and backports.org. I assume that I will be able to
do this more or less seemlessly since these updated
packages will be specifically custom made for Sarge and
only Sarge.

My only problem is downloading the CD image. I've tried for
the past four hours with Bittorrent. The download has finally
ended with "Done" but I can't find it anywhere on my
system. I did a search in Windows on ".iso". This brought up
my existing iso images but nothing for Debian.

So, I am willing to download the CD image by FTP. But I
have tried several times to find the iso image and have
failed. I tried ftp.debian.org and cdimages.debian.org and I
just can't find the iso image.

My SmartFTP client has resume and a progress bar for
these things. Once I get the address I should have no
problem.

Would really appreciate your help. And please be precise.

Thank you so much.

Benjamin

You can use symlinks to point to other partitions for portions of your
web/ftp site. You generally have to configure servers to follow
symlinks.

FTP site for educational software on Linux

2000-05-11 Thread Jean-Pierre Demailly
Here is a piece of information that could be of interest to some
Debian users and developers. It has not been widely advertised and
may thus have remained unnoticed until now.

A project entitled "Compil'Edux" has been started around October 1999
in Grenoble University by a group of people from the (rather big)
local LUG. Here is a copy of the Freshmeat announcement:

> The goal of Compil'Edux is to provide a centralized place where open
> source educational software can be found, either in the form of links

>
> FTP site: ftp://ftp.ac-grenoble.fr/ge/

In particular, the FTP site contains enhancements or bug corrections
to quite a number of packages whose main development has otherwise
stopped (but which are still of substantial interest, especially for
education purposes). A number of these packages are not yet in the
Debian distribution, or when they are, the Compil'Edux packages might
be in a more "polished" form than those present in the current Debian
distribution (the site makes clear which are those packages). Debian
might possibly consider them for inclusion in future releases.

Also, there is currently a French government initiative in cooperation
with a few commercial Linux distributors (RedHat-France, Mandrake,
SuSE) to produce pre-compiled CD-Roms for French educational
institutions, and that initiative is partly based on the work made by
the Compil'Edux team. Demo CD-Roms combining this with R.Di Cosmo's
DemoLinux distribution should be available in the next months.
(Essentially nothing of this is French specific, though).

I think you might have missed the installation guide in
debian/dists/slink/main/disks-m68k/current/mac/install.txt which
tells you which files you need to get started, viz.

 * mac/install.sit.hqx (StuffIt archive of the installation files),
   or
 * mac/Debian-m68k-2.1-Mac.img.hqx (DiskCopy 4.2 image of the 'rescue'
   floppy), and
 * mac/resc1440.bin ('rescue' floppy image)
 * mac/drv1440.bin ('drivers' floppy image)
 * common/base2_1.tgz

base is in the common/ directory because all the other m68k machines
use it too.

If you look in common/, you will see that people who are installing
from floppies have to download 7 (or 13) more floppies. Were the
man pages included, this number would increase dramatically.

The installation uses a bootstrap principle, where the first
rescue disk contains enough to run a linux system on a file system
in memory, which builds the small linux system on disk, which can
then download the packages (by ftp, CD etc.) you need to build the
type of system you want.

The multiple pages, or directories, are designed to keep the huge
number of package files organised into manageably-sized directories,
by distributions, licence categories, chip architectures, etc.

I'm not sure what you mean by the X windows page or the "Debian" package
or the X folder. The X packages are in
debian/dists/slink/main/binary-m68k/x11/ but using dselect (which the
installation process automatically starts) avoids your having to type
all that.

If the installation dialogues are the same for macs as x86, you
will be asked for a machine "profile" just before entering dselect,
though it's not obligatory to choose one.

> Do they really think that someone wanting to install Linux might not want
> the man pages? Is that why they are off in some other corner of the web

See above. What appears to be a "corner" is "the right place" for
dselect to find it, according to your chosen distribution, architecture,
etc.

> also accept the argument that, "Linux is difficult to learn." But I find

The "labelling" is via the Packages files which are designed for
programs like dselect to read and present to the user.

> Thanks for letting me blow off steam. And TIA for helping me make sense
> out of this gibberish.

So the intention is not that you peruse the directories (though you can
do that if you're familiar with them), but to get the disks-m68k files
you need, and then use the tools as they present themselves.

Good luck.

help with ftp site please

2000-01-19 Thread dkphoto
I am trying to download a basic package for the 68K Mac from the Debian
ftp site and could use some help please.

Files seem to be spread all over with no rhyme or reason. As a result I
can't be sure what I need or where to find it (and I've installed Debian
once before and BSD once too). There seems to be a basic package that is
not clearly labeled as such (just "Debian") and is, to my way of
thinking, way too small to be a full basic install. (About 14 megs
stuffed, including the Base2.1gz file which of course was somewhere else
on the ftp site. WHY?WHY?WHY?). The minimalist information on the web
site also seems to suggest very strongly that there are no man pages
included with the above "package", but that the man pages must be
downloaded separately, also difficult to make sense of, from a separate
page. The packages page took me a couple of hours to find at all, then
when I did, it made little sense. I opened the X windows page and found
everything in there EXCEPT X windows!!! Unless the Debian folks have
performed a Guiness class miracle in compact software design, Xwindows is
certainly not contained in the "Debian" package, it also isn't in the X
folder of the ftp site, so can anyone give me a clue as to where it might
be?

Why on earth can't they put together some basic packages and clearly
label them?:

1. minimal system install
2. full system install
3. full system + Xwindows install
4. all the other stuff you might need or want thrown in a box

Do they really think that someone wanting to install Linux might not want
the man pages? Is that why they are off in some other corner of the web
site? I can accept the argument, "Linux is difficult to install." I can
also accept the argument that, "Linux is difficult to learn." But I find
it hard to accept the argument that, "Because they're Linux files, it is
difficult to clearly organize and label them on the ftp site."

Thanks for letting me blow off steam. And TIA for helping me make sense
out of this gibberish.

He shouldn't need to do that. Desktop workstations rarely need bind. Most
likely he needs to fix his /etc/hosts. Put your nameservers ("DNS

Find the IP address of your ISPs nameserver and put a line like

Install the man-db and xbase packages, along with whichever xserver-???
package is appropriate for your video card.

You can use the dselect program to search for packages using the "/"
keystroke.

Why can't I use 'man' in debain 2.0 that downloaded from your FTP Site?

1998-10-13 Thread ayin

Dear Sir
  After installed Debian 2.0 downloaded
from your ftp site, I can't run 'man' command. I can not see the X windows
system. Need I some other packages to install ?

Tell me how to do about using 'man' and X window
system.

Thanks a lot

In general, you'll use a username of 'anonymous' (or possibly 'ftp')
and your email address as a password. This is conventional for most
FTP sites that allow anonymous FTP.

How to get into an ftp site

1998-10-09 Thread Wilson Tuma

Hi

I finally configures ppp on my linux system to dail my isp. I even
configured as a dns server and it is working find. I tried to do ftp
ftp.debian.org I got connected only I am being asked for a users name and
password.

Please what is the user name and password you need to connect to the debian
fpt site and download application packages.

Thanks

Installing Sybase server from RH ftp site

1998-10-02 Thread Douglas Bates
Yesterday on http://www.redhat.com/ they were offering a free download
of RPM package of the Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise and of its
docs. You are asked to register but can access the ftp site directly
(ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/sybase/) if you prefer not to do that.

Has anyone tried to install these on a Debian system either with rpm
or with alien calling rpm? Since it will be a big install and I need
to clean up the root partition to do it, I would appreciate hearing if
others have been successful with these.

Please respond to me as well as to the list. I usually don't have time
to read the entire mail list and would prefer not to miss a response.

Here is what rpm on a Debian 2.0 system reports about the packages:

I've always found that 'guest@' is sufficient to get into an anonymous
FTP site. Then again, I'm a paranoid sort of person, and I don't use
Netscape for mail, so I never enter an email address into Netscape's
email entry. It's never stopped me from getting into an anonymous FTP
site (wonder what it sends when it's blank?).

Anonymous ftp (i.e. you respond "anonymous" when asked for user name) DOES
typically ask for a password, but entering any syntactically correct email
address at this point is usually sufficient (though some sites may check that
this matches what they know you are connecting from). Some sites may have their
anonymous ftp configured so as not to require a password, but these are
exceptional.

Of course if you give anything other than "anonymous" as username, then you will
only get in if
(a) the username you give exists as an account on the remote machine,
(b) the password that you give is the correct password for that account,
(c) the remote site is configured to allow ftp access from your local machine

But it is quite normal for ftp to ask for a password!

Ted.

You log in as anonymous to ftp.debian.org and issue a get command. You
are then asked about a password? IIRC, the ftp protocol has no means
for doing so.

You are not trying to upload files, aren't you?

Hi,
AFAIK, the reverse-dns-lookup failure is due to misconfiguration
of your ISPs DNS configuration. If your ISP can't or won't fix it
your only salvation is to get a new ISP. That is what I had to do.

In the meantime, there is a good mirror at llug.sep.bnl.gov,
which does not do a reverse-dns-lookup (or at least didn't a couple of
months ago before I changes ISPs).

What is your hostname?
I can manually add it to the /etc/hosts file to retreive the correct

I have the *exact* same problem. I never complained because I figure it's
my own problem (many other sites also disallow my connections).

But it would be nice for Debian to be more `open' considering what it's

Call your ISP and tell them to fix their inverse mapping.

This is what happens:

You connect to a server. That server has your IP address (from the
packets) so in does a reverse lookup. If your IP was, for example,
208.150.221.24, that would resolve to "pc-24.pix-pool1.midco.net"
(reverse lookups are where the "in-addr.arpa" domains come into play.
All ISPs should know how to do this. Some don't)

However, the server is a bit paranoid, as it should be, so it attempts
to resolve the name it just received and see if that resolves back to
the IP. "pc-24.pix-pool1.midco.net" does indeed resolve to
208.150.221.24.

However, if you had connected from 208.146.80.88 (which is impossible,
btw - hence the current DNS mappings :) a reverse lookup would yield
"nobody.midco.net". However, "nobody.midco.net" does not resolve! The
server would note this and refuse service.

However, in the case of a dialup ISP, all dialup lines should have
successful forward and reverse resolution.

Good luck!

Uh, no. Most ISPs do something like "nobody.netblock.isp.com" - that's
why the lookup fails. If they did it right, it would work everytime, no
matter what hostname the user has set.

Why? Well, let's examine what happens ...

You connect to the server. The server now has your IP address. It does
a reverse lookup on that address. It then does a FORWARD lookup on the
answer it got from the reverse lookup. We have a NAT pool here ... so
the IP address 208.150.221.219 might resolve to
pc-219.pix-pool1.midco.net. Luckily for MidcoNet users :),
pc-219.pix-pool1.midco.net does in fact resolve to 208.150.221.219. If
it doesn't, there's not a damn thing the user can do, sorry.

Integrating main, "non-us" ftp site

1998-01-11 Thread Nathan E Norman
If I attempt to do a dselect install via ftp from a local mirror which
has both the main debian distribution as well as the "non-US" stuff, it
doesn't work. Not without jumping through some serious hoops, at any
rate.

The problem is that the Packages file on the non-US site do not follow
the same conventions as the packages file on the main ftp site.

For bo, the "main" Packages file contains entries like
  "Filename: stable/binary-i386/x11/9fonts_1-4.deb"
 ^^
  "Filename: bo/binary-i386/bzip_0.21-3.deb"
 ^^

For hamm, the "main" Packages file contains entries like
  "Filename: dists/unstable/main/binary-i386/text/2utf_1.01.deb",
 ^^^
but the non-US site's Packages file contains entries like
  "Filename: hamm/binary-i386/apache-ssl_1.2.4+1.11-2.deb"

I understand (I think) why this is the way it is, but it makes it
impossible to use a symlink to get at the non-US stuff via ftp (using
dselect). I don't have any great ideas for the bo links, but if the
non-US site kept its files in "dists/unstable/non-us" life would be a
lot easier.

Any chance there will be a solution forthcoming, or do I need to shut up
and hack the Packages files on my mirror? (Easy to do but mirror will
be pissed).

If no one else has any interest in doing anything like this then it's
not worth implementing, I suppose.

The trick is that the stable link is there for compatibility. However,
the ftp archives have been reorginized slightly and the proper way to
access each distribution is now through the dists/* link.

Notice the path names in the "getting" messages. Why does it want to

I was confused with some debian mirrors. Then I do:
- dselect upgrade - from ftp.debian
- dselect install - from local mirror or from another

Now I have many configurations files in /var/lib/dpkg/methods/ftp:
 vars.ftp.debian.org
 vars.sunsite.icm.edu.pl
 vars.ftp.funet.fi
and
 vars.dresden.nousa.

When I want work with some debian site, I make link:
ln -sf vars.dresden.nousa vars in this directory.

First three configs are for standard distributions, but vars.dresden.nousa
is for international packages. I have in vars.dresden.nousa settings:
  $ftpsite='os.inf.tu-dresden.de';
  $passive='1';
  $username='anonymous';
  $password='[EMAIL PROTECTED]';
  $ftpdir='/pub';
  $distribs='debian-non-US';
  $dldir='debian';
I haven't any problems with this config.

Non-US Debian FTP Site?

1997-04-19 Thread thuja
I wanted to install PGP on my system so I searched out

ftp://os.inf.tu-dresden.de

This site has US and international versions of PGP, as well as some other
neat crypto-stuff (encrypted filesystem, a mail client, etc.).

I tried to point dselect at it though, and couldn't get it to work. It
doesn't share the same directory structure as, say, ftp.debian.org.
Specifically, it doesn't have (stable|non-free|contrib) directories. I
tried using a '.' for the distributions to get and this worked to get
the Packages file, but when I tried to install a package it couldn't
find it on the site.

The solution was easy: I just downloaded it myself and ran dpkg on it, but
I was wondering if this site was supported, and whether it's supposed
to work with dselect? It looks like it's _almost_ there, so I suspect that
I just don't know enough about dselect to get it to work properly.

Any comments?

Mike.

There are lots of books on Linux now, that can provide a good overview
for a newbie. I found 16 of them when I searched:
   http://www.bookpool.com
The Linux Journal (also available in print form) provides a table of

The Debian project has an FAQ at:

To find out about specific packages, you might try the Linux Software Map

(I suppose I should add that I have no commercial interest in any
