I'm not real familiar with either product, so all I can describe is our current solution... maybe you can make a suggestion based on that... What we have at the moment is an NEC phone switch with 8 analog lines running to our voicemail/fax server. When a call comes in and is not answered, the switch sends the call to the voicemail server which then presents the greeting for the appropriate mailbox and saves the message. For faxes, pretty much the same thing happens, except that it doesn't wait for a phone to stop ringing. Hylafax seems to want a separate phone line for each incoming fax number, what I need is to be able to do what I just described: i.e. any one of 30 fax numbers might be connected to any one of 8 incoming analog lines... Do you think that's a possibility? I guess at this point I should be taking this to the asterisk mailing list, or at least off list. I really appreciate your advice. OT: Voicemail/fax software
Hi, folks. I have an aging OS/2 machine running some (also aging) voicemail/fax software that I'd like to replace with a Free alternative. My needs aren't terribly complex, I need to be able to - connect it to my phone switch - have multiple voice and fax mailboxes - configure the voicemail over the handset and I would like to also be able to have faxes sent to an appropriate email recipient. I have googled around, but there doesn't appear to be many mature choices. The Bayonne project seems like it wants to be what I need at some point, but doesn't seem ready yet. Does anyone have any suggestions? (PS, If there is not a Free solution, a proprietary solution that works on GNU/Linux would be acceptable as an interim measure) Thanks -- Mark Roach -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Fax Software, Modems, and Woody
Team: I'm running a fairly vanilla woody 3.0 r0 system. I have added a modem on com1. Do I need a module for it, or will the apps deal with the modem directly? Also, I installed the hylafax package, and got all kinds of pathing errors (i did an apt-get install). It seems to want to be in /usr/local, and debian probably put it where it belongs. Before I start tearing into it's .conf files, is the a solid send/receive fax package? Is there an alternative? I saw eFax, but nothing else caught my eye. Finally, do these packages have print-driver for "print to fax"? And do the take a pdf as an input, or will I have to convert to ps or tiff to send? I wonder if he's asking about its ability to act as a daemon? Efax Can be set up using getty, in standby mode, through initd. The docs with efax do a reasonable job of describing the line you add to the conf file for this. Efax then sits around waiting for the phone to ring. Local/remote (network) faxing can be done though its use as a print filter in printcap. I want to go back to it (noticed someone else mentioned unstable fixing a USRobotics problem, which I seemed to have while using it). Hylafax has not worked properly for me yet. I advocated efax as well when this thread was started. NO, efax does not need a background daemon/ server. It directly dials and sends fax in Class 1&2 modems. The interaction is through command line only .. For example, to dial the number 633222 using tone dialing and send a two-page fax from the TIFF/G3 files letter.001 and letter.002 using a Class 1 fax modem connected to ttyS0 just type in: efax -d /dev/ttyS0 -o1 \ -t T633222 letter.001 letter.002 And there are similar one liners which will retreive fax for you too . The man pages are adequate to get you going quickly .. HTH USM Bish

I second this. Efax is small, light and very dependable. It's author (Ed Casas) and maintainer (Dirk Eddelbuettel) are both very responsive about fixing problems quickly. One piece of advice: if you choose to install it, you should install the version in unstable (`woody'). There is a problem with certain US Robotics modems in the version in stable which is fixed in the version in `woody'. This version installs smoothly on potato systems (or did on mine anyway), Jim
Re: what fax software do you suggest?
For small time requirements that you envisage, the efax program is good enough. It is on the main sub dir of Debian. Has an utility called "efix" which does the job of conversion between fax, text, bit- map, greyscale, ps and other formats. For heavier workload, most people vouch for mgetty + sendfax. Don't have personal experience on this combination. I have used "kfax" (kde) in the past without any problems ... However, for the rare few faxes out of my system "efax" was the final choice for me. Small, efficient, no-frills software which works !!! Recommendation: Do an apt-get for efax. |> I have efax-0.8a, and used it to send text and postscript files. I |> chose it because it's small. I also use efax and have been extremely happy with it---small, easy to use, and easy to configure. It comes with a frontend script called `fax' (oddly enough) which means that for, most purposes, all you have to do is prepare an ASCII text file, and then: fax make FOO fax view FOO.001 (if you want to check how it looks) fax send NUMBER FOO.001 In fact, if you're confident about how it will look, or in a hurry, you can just do: fax send NUMBER FOO and the program will convert the ASCII file and also send the fax. To send PS-files, you need to invoke Ghostscript to do the conversion, and then use fax send, Jim

There was some configuration involved with efax but efax can handle Class 1 operation which sendfax can't (at least not the version I used). This may or may not be an issue for you. I've been pretty happy with hylafax, although the version in slink doesn't seem to initialize my modem (USR Sportster) properly so I went back to the hamm version. I could never get efax to work. I couldn't get faxgetty to run and still work with data, so I got a second modem (as far as I can tell, this is more a modem problem than a software problem although it did work in Win95--ugh). Fax Software
Can anyone tell me of a good fax software package for Linux. I see that they have an efax, hylafax, and mgetty-fax. Which of these is the easiest and most reliable to use?
