Hello, You mean that i have to do a minimal install of debian without adding the metapackage on installation and then add gnome manually? Is there any info / guide on this? No. I mean that that packages which 'apt-get autoremove' wants to remove can be left untouched by marking them as manually installed. apt-mark is a useful program for this.

No problem at all. I just want to verify my thoughts or share them. I also checkout the project and i am now after it. We will see. Does anyone know where to find them or a different way to install gnome-panel and gnome-utils? I had exactly the same problem. Being too lazy to compile it myself, I just grabbed the Rad Hat packages from one of Gnome mirrors and converted them with 'alien' and then installed with dpkg (yes, I know that alien -i would also install them for me). It mostly worked, though some of the Gnome features do not seem to work, like adding applets to the panel (or maybe I screwed the configuration in the process) Hope this helps. bst rgds, Dmitry --Optimists study English. Gnome and dependencies
I notice that in potato there are several gnome applications which are dependent on libglib1.1 and/or libgtk1.1, while these are no longer in the available list (they are shown as local/obsolete in dselect). I also show libglib1.1.5, libglib1.1.6, libglib1.1.9, libglib1.1.11, libglib1.1.12 and libglib1.1.13 as well as libgtk1, libgtk1.1.12, libgtk1.1.13, libgtk1.1.14 and libgtk1.1.15 as being available. Are these all independent libraries or are they different versions of the same library? Did the numbering system get changed without being reflected in the dependency lists of some other packages (such as gnome-admin, gmc, etc.)? They are a zillion incompatible versions of the same library; it's the alpha/development branch of glib/Gtk and changes often. So packages have to depend on a specific one, and when a new one comes out they have to be recompiled to work with it. This is a disadvantage of packaging alpha software. Things will settle down when Gtk hits 1.2 (this month, one assumes). Havoc
