And then your government subpoenas (or just asks) Google for your
bookmarks and finds all sorts of interesting links that they can
use to trump up charges against you.

There are at least a dozen different social bookmarking services out
there. Like Kamaraju, I prefer Google's implementation because it's
simple and integrates well with my search history. But I also use
del.icio.us sometimes, mainly because it has achieved critical mass
and thus can be an excellent place to find relevant links, even better
than searching Google for some topics. If you're a Firefox user,
del.icio.us has pretty good extensions too. But I mostly use a simple
bookmarklet, because I mostly don't use Firefox/Iceweasel anymore.

Have a look around, you might find something you like better than
GBookmarks.

As for the privacy concerns, I have pretty much put my faith in Google.
Google knows all about me. Google is Borg. I have been assimilated.

Perhaps you are correct, but isn't the idea of purge to get rid of all
the config files too? Does that not apply to files that may be in a
user's /home directory? If not, then by removing that directory (in

I believe that purging doesn't remove files in $HOME; this was
discussed sometime recently on the list. Right now I see at least one
'.' directory in $HOME belonging to a package that I purged.

Oh yes, I know all about that. Ran into the iceweasel bug that did it
to me. All fixed now.

There is such a thing as restoring a backup, which is what people should
all have. The bookmarks.html file is enough for bookmarks, but for
cookies and passwords, more files are required.

Personally, passwords are not kept in my browsers for security reasons,
and cookies are routinely deleted, so it makes little difference to me
if they are gone. Plus the fact that my Konqueror has the same
bookmarks as my IceWeasel and it is not difficult to copy them from
Konqueror to Iceweasel (even easier the other way around) means deleting
.mozilla has more of an effect on the plugins than on anything else.

I think my Firefox/Weasel browser has been hi-jacked.

Regardless the url it displays a page that says * The Web site for the

If I use Galeon or lynx I get to the real site.

I tried shutting down all FF/IW sessions but it doesn't

Backup your FF private dir to be able to inspect it later and see what
happened, but get it out of the way, so that you start a clean browser
session.

$ mv ~/.firefox ~/.firefox.bak

If you didn't make the utterly stupid mistake to browse the Web while
being root and have not installed as root some malware, that should
resolve the problem entirely.
