shouldn't it be startx -- -dpi 100 ?
(Note the -- which says following options are for X, not startx itself)

Does not work for me. Resolution is still 75x75 as xdpyinfo says.

Thanks:

Since I use xfs, the order of the font path is in /etc/X11/xfs/config in
the catalogue. By putting 75 before 100 as you suggested, I fixed my
problem. Thanks again.

never mind, it can be set as a command-line option:

David,

You wouldn't happen to know where xdpyinfo gets its info? More to the
point, where might one change the default resolution for X?

Thanks

Take a look at your font path with :

cat /etc/X11/XF86Config | grep Font

Make a mental note as to whether the 75dpi fonts are listed
before or after the 100dpi fonts.

Then, check your monitor default dot per inch output with:

xdpyinfo | grep resolution

It will probably say 75x75 dots per inch.

You want the first font size listed in your font path (in your
XF86Config file) to be the same as the resolution from xdpyinfo.
So, if you have 75x75 dpi as your default monitor resolution,
make sure that your font path in your XF86Config file lists your
75dpi fonts *before* the 100dpi fonts. Just edit "100dpi" with
"75dpi" and "75dpi" with "100dpi".

I bet you have xfonts-100dpi installed somewhere! Try remove the package
or put path to xfonts-75dpi infront of xfonts-100dpi in your XF86config or
xfs config file.

I think this issue has came up several times already.

Huge X-fonts in Frozen

2000-07-24 Thread Albert Kinderman
I am using xfs and xfstt. After the most recent apt-get update and
upgrade to frozen, the default fonts in X are huge. X and xfs are at
3.3.6-10.

What happened and how can I get back to some reasonable size fonts?
